The Pale Mist
The bell tower cracked at dawn. It did not fall. It did not crumble into dust. It simply split. A jagged line of light ran from the clock face to the base. The stone groaned. A sound like a dying whale. I stood on the square. My boots were wet. The mist was thick. It tasted of iron and old ash. I am Eleanor. I remember this. I always remember this. The crowd scattered. Men ran. Women screamed....
