The Faded Bouquet
The hall smelled of wax and old stone. It was a scent that clung to the throat, thick and waxy, tasting of decay beneath the polish. Thomas stood in the center of the marble floor. He was small. He was twelve. He wore a suit that did not fit, too large in the shoulders, too tight in the waist. He looked like a doll stuffed into a man’s clothes. Around him, the guests moved.
