The rain did not fall. It hung. A grey curtain of mist, thick as wool, wrapped the valley. It smelled of wet stone and old blood. Tom stood on the ledge. He was twelve. His hands shook. Not from cold. From hunger. "Is it real?" he asked. His voice was small. A sparrow trapped in a box. Across the chasm, a figure waited. Tall. Cloaked in white. The face was hidden. A smooth, pale mask. No eyes....
