The Pale Bonsai
The mill collapsed before dawn. It did not crumble. It did not splinter. It simply ceased to be stone and mortar and became a heavy, silent pile of dust. There was no sound. No groan of timber. No shattering of glass. One moment, the great mill stood on the hill, defying the fog. The next, it was a mound. Thomas stood on the ridge. He watched the dust settle.
