The fog sat thick on the water. It tasted of iron. I stood on the pier. My legs shook. Not from cold. From fear. I held the lantern. Its glass was cracked. The flame danced. It was the only light left. My brother was gone. He had left before dawn. He did not say goodbye. He only took the key. The key to the cellar. The key to the cage. I watched his boat shrink.
