The fire started in the rafters. It ate the dust. It ate the memories. It ate the silence. Eleanor stood still. The heat pressed against her face. It was a solid thing. A heavy hand. She did not move. Her feet were nailed to the floorboards. She watched the orange tongue lick the dark wood. The air tasted of sulfur and old paper. This was the Abbey. Or what was left of it.
