Mara woke with the taste of iron in her mouth. It was a cold taste. Metallic. Sharp. She lay still. The ceiling was white. It was a hospital ceiling. Or a clinic. It was a place of sterile air. The air smelled of lavender. It smelled of nothing. It smelled of old paper. She sat up. The sheets were thin. They were blue. They were damp. Her hands were bare. Her fingers were long. They trembled....
