The fog rolled in from the harbor, thick as wool and tasting of iron. It swallowed the streets of New Harbor one block at a time. I stood at the window of the third-floor apartment. The glass was cold against my forehead. Margaret was gone. She had been gone for three days. The police said it was a disappearance. They did not say it was a murder. I knew better.
