The bell rang. It was a heavy, iron sound. It shook the dust from the rafters. "Dr. Hale." The voice was thin. It was cold. I stood up. My knees popped. I was old. I was tired. "Dr. Hale, come forward." I walked. The floor was cold stone. It was a great hall. High ceilings. Painted with saints. But the saints had no faces. Just white ovals. The Council sat in a row. Twelve chairs. Twelve men....
