The commission arrived in a manila envelope left on my desk at the New Yorker, slipped between a fact-checking memo and a contributor contract by a courier who didn't make eye contact. I knew who it was from before I opened the envelope. There were only twelve people in New York who could afford to make that kind of offer, and I'd interviewed three of them for cover stories that never ran....
