Ruth Goldstein-Rosenberg was born in 1916, in the back room of a union hall on the Lower East Side, during a meeting of the Women's Trade Union League. Her mother, Clara, had been giving a speech about the need for paid maternity leave when her water broke, and she finished the speech before she went to the hospital.
