The hum of the ventilation system was the only sound. It was a low, electric drone, a mechanical breath that never stopped. I sat in the chair, the leather creaking under my weight. The room was small. White walls. White floor. The light was flat, sourceless, coming from everywhere and nowhere. It stripped the shadows from the corners. It stripped the color from my face.
