The institute was a windowless concrete box buried beneath the streets of Manhattan. Dr. Clement was the most sought-after psychiatrist in the city, known for his ability to "unlock" the most guarded secrets of the human mind.

His current patient, a man known only as Subject Zero, was a masterpiece of pathology. Zero claimed to be a former intelligence officer who had been betrayed by his own government. He spoke of a world of shadows, of deep-state conspiracies, and of a secret war being fought in the subconscious of the world's leaders.

Clement was fascinated. He spent months in sessions with Zero, using every tool in his arsenal—hypnosis, sensory deprivation, chemical triggers. He felt he was on the verge of a breakthrough, of uncovering a truth that would change the course of history.

"You're close, Doctor," Zero would whisper, his eyes tracking Clement's every move. "But you're looking at the map, not the terrain. You think you're the one asking the questions, but the questions are the only thing keeping you sane."

One night, Clement found a folder on his desk that he didn't remember filing. Inside were detailed notes on his own life: his childhood fears, his failed marriage, the exact date and time of his first nervous breakdown. The notes were written in his own handwriting, but he had no memory of writing them.

He looked at the date on the last entry. It was today.

*Session 402: The subject has finally accepted the role of the Doctor. He believes he is treating Subject Zero. The transition is complete.*

Clement felt a surge of nausea. He looked across the room at Subject Zero, who was now smiling—a warm, paternal smile.

"It's time to wake up, Clement," the man said. "Or should I call you Subject Zero?"

The room shifted. The leather chair, the books, the soft lighting—it all dissolved into the cold, grey reality of a padded cell. The man standing over him wasn't a patient; he was the Head Physician.

"The 'Doctor' persona was a fascinating defense mechanism," the Physician noted, scribbling on a clipboard. "You created a world where you were the one in control, the one with the answers. It's a common response to total powerlessness."

Clement—or Zero—tried to scream, but he found that he no longer knew how to form the words. He had spent so long pretending to be the healer that he had forgotten how to be the broken.

He looked at the wall and saw a mirror. He didn't recognize the man staring back at him. He was just a blank space in a white room, a ghost in a concrete box.
