Arthur Pemberton arrived at Bombay harbour on a Tuesday in October, 1874. The monsoon had just broken, and the air hung thick with salt and jasmine. He carried two things: a brass sword he had not earned, and a letter of introduction from Lord Curzon to Colonel Colworth, a retired East India Company officer who had made his fortune in the Deccan and returned to England with a collection of gems and a collection of enemies.

The letter said Colworth would be waiting. It did not say that Colworth had arranged for Arthur to marry a princess.

Colworth met him at the station in a carriage with black curtains and silver handles. He was a large man, fifty-five, with a beard like a broom and eyes like polished stone. He wore a white suit that had seen better decades.

"Arthur," he said, shaking his hand with both of Arthur's. "Welcome to India, old boy. You look like a man who has seen war. Good. You will need that here."

They drove through the streets of Bombay—shopkeepers closing their stalls, coolies carrying baskets of mangoes, a woman in a sari of deep crimson walking past with a clay lamp balanced on her head. Arthur watched her go and felt something he could not name stir in his chest.

"The Oudh Kingdom," Colworth said. "Two hundred miles north. The last Maharaja died last year. His daughter—Princess Isabella, though she goes by Rani Kumari now—rules in his stead. We have an arrangement with her people. Tax collection rights, mining rights, that sort of thing. But the girl is young, inexperienced. She needs guidance. And you, Arthur, will be her guide."

Arthur said nothing. He had not come to India to be a guide. He had come because England had no room for him—a soldier without a war, a man without a purpose.

They reached Oudh three days later. The kingdom was a place of white marble palaces and ancient banyan trees, of musicians who played sitars at twilight and priests who burned incense at dawn. And at the centre of it all was the Rani—twenty-four, fluent in six languages, sharp as a surgeon's blade, and dressed in silk that cost more than Arthur's entire regiment had been worth.

They met in the palace garden. She was reading beneath a jasmine trellis, a book in English held open in her lap. She looked up when he approached, and her eyes were the colour of dark honey.

"You are late," she said.

"The train was delayed."

"The train was delayed because you took the wrong station in Agra. I had my men watch for you."

Arthur felt something between admiration and alarm rise in his chest. "You watch me already?"

"I watch everyone, Mr. Pemberton. It is the only way to survive in this country."

They were married in a ceremony that lasted five days. The palace filled with princes and merchants and British officers in their dress uniforms. Colworth stood at the Rani's right hand, smiling with all his teeth. Arthur stood at her left hand, feeling like a man walking onto a stage where he had not read the script.

The first death happened three weeks after the wedding.

The Maharaja's eldest son—Rani's brother, a young man named Vikram who had been training to take the throne—died in a hunting accident. He fell from his horse near the old fort, and his neck broke on the rocks below. Arthur was called to the palace at midnight. The Rani was already there, standing over her brother's body, her face a mask of stillness.

"It was an accident," Colworth said when Arthur arrived. "A tragic accident. The horse spooked."

Colworth placed a hand on her shoulder. "Grief makes us suspicious, Rani. We must be patient."

The second death came a month later. Rani's younger sister, Priya, died in a fire. Her chamber caught flame sometime during the night—oil lamps overturned, silk curtains ignited, the ancient wood of the palace walls feeding the blaze. Priya was found in her bed, still dressed in her evening clothes, a silver comb clutched in her hand.

Arthur stood in the ashes of the chamber the next morning. The walls were black. The floor was charcoal. And beneath the rubble, half-buried in ash, he found a small brass box. Inside was a letter, written in the Rani's hand, addressed to the Secretary of State for India in London.

We are being murdered, it said. One by one. And the man who arranges it stands at her side every morning and calls himself her friend.

Arthur took the letter to Colworth that afternoon. The colonel read it in his study, his face unreadable. When he finished, he closed the letter carefully and placed it in the fire.

"Sentimental nonsense," he said. "The girl is grieving. Grief makes women write things they do not mean."

"She wrote this in English," Arthur said. "Not in Hindi. Not in Urdu. In English. As if she knew someone in London would read it."

Colworth looked at him. His eyes were still. "Arthur, you are a soldier. You follow orders. That is what you do."

That night, Arthur went to the Rani's chamber. She was sitting on the balcony, looking out over the palace gardens. The jasmine was in bloom, and the scent was so thick it made his head swim.

"You burned my letter," she said without turning around.

"I did not burn your letter. I found it in the ashes of my sister's room."

"You found it where I told you to find it. I wanted you to find it."

Arthur sat beside her. The stone was cold beneath him. "Why are they dying, Isabella? Your brother. Your sister. Your father—God, your father, who taught me to ride and to shoot and to read Shakespeare. He died of a fever that came on in three days. Three days. No doctor could explain it."

The Rani turned to look at him. In the lamplight, her face was beautiful and terrible. "Because they stood between Colonel Colworth and the tax revenues of Oudh. Because my father signed a treaty that gave the East India Company the right to collect taxes directly from my people. Because my brother refused to sign it when our father died. Because my sister was going to expose him to the British press."

Arthur felt the room tilt. "Colworth—"

"Is my friend," the Rani said. "He is your friend. He is every white man's friend in this country. And he is killing us."

Arthur went to the palace crypt that night. He told himself he was looking for proof—documents, records, anything that could be used against Colworth. But what he found was worse than documents.

In the deepest chamber, behind a wall that had been sealed for two hundred years, he found a room. And in that room, he found the truth.

The walls were covered in paintings—portraits of every Maharaja who had ruled Oudh, going back six hundred years. And beside each portrait was a small black stone, like a piece of coal. Six hundred black stones. And on each one, carved in tiny letters, was a name and a date.

The most recent names were Vikram. Priya. The old Maharaja.

And beneath them, in fresh ink that had not yet dried: Isabella.

Arthur stood in the crypt for a long time. The air was cold and thick with the smell of damp earth and old incense. He thought of Colworth's white suit, his silver-handled carriage, his smile with all his teeth. He thought of the Rani sitting on her balcony, watching the jasmine bloom.

He took the brass box from his pocket—the one that had held the letter. Inside was the Rani's ring, a diamond the size of a quail's egg set in gold. He held it in his palm and felt its weight.

The next morning, Arthur went to Colworth's study. The colonel was writing at his desk, his back to the door.

"I know," Arthur said.

Colworth did not turn around. "Know what, Arthur?"

"What you did to my father. What you did to Vikram. What you did to Priya."

Colworth set down his pen. He turned slowly, and his face was no longer the face of a friend. It was the face of a man who had never expected to be caught.

"You are a good soldier, Arthur," he said. "But you are a foolish one. You think the British Empire cares about the death of one princess and her two siblings? You think London will send a single investigator to a kingdom two hundred miles from the nearest railway? You think anyone will care?"

Arthur placed the ring on the desk. "I think someone should."

Colworth smiled. It was not a kind smile. "Go home, Arthur. Take your wife and go home. England is warm. The tea is good. And no one will die."

Arthur did not go home.

He sent a telegram to London. He wrote to the Secretary of State, to the India Office, to three newspapers he knew would publish the truth. And when the investigation came—when Inspector Mortimer arrived from Delhi with a folder of documents and a warrant for Colworth's arrest—Arthur stood in the palace courtyard and watched the colonel being led away in handcuffs.

The Rani stood beside him. She did not speak. She did not need to.

Colworth was sentenced to life imprisonment and shipped back to England in chains. The British government issued a statement that called the deaths "tragic accidents" and promised to review the tax agreements with native kingdoms. The statement was published in The Times on a Tuesday, buried on page twelve between a review of a new opera and an advertisement for a patent medicine.

The Rani died two years later. Not from poison, not from fire, not from a falling horse. From a fever—the same kind of fever that had taken her father. Simple. Common. Unavoidable.

Arthur stayed in India. He lived in the abandoned palace—the one Colworth had built for himself, the one with the jasmine trellis and the black-stone crypt. He wrote every day. He wrote about the Rani, about Vikram, about Priya, about the six hundred black stones on the wall. He wrote until his hand cramped and his eyes failed and the jasmine stopped blooming.

No one read what he wrote. The empire moved on. The tax revenues were renegotiated. A new princess was installed. The gems were sent to London and set in crowns and displayed in glass cases where no Indian could see them.

And in the empty palace, Arthur Pemberton sat in the garden and watched the roses grow, and remembered the woman in the sari with the clay lamp balanced on her head, and wondered if any of it had mattered.
