Cate Harlow found it on the floor beside the bedroom door, where her father must have kicked it off when he took off his uniform jacket on the morning he flew to Chicago. Miss Crowley was waiting for her on the stoop. Miss Crowley was a widow who had lived across the hall from the Harlows for eight years and who had taught at the same school as Evelyn, back when Evelyn taught third grade at P.S. 87. She was thin and sharp and wore her hair in a bun that was held in place by three pins and one opinion.
"Evelyn," she said. "Is he—"
"The schedule pilot," Evelyn said. "Yes. He's scheduled to fly to Chicago."
"Not today." Miss Crowley's voice was flat. She had heard, the way neighbors hear things in Greenwich Village: by rumor, by telephone, by the look on people's faces when they think no one is looking.
Evelyn looked at her. "What did you hear, Agnes?"
Miss Crowley looked at the street. A Model T was turning the corner, its exhaust making a sound like a man coughing. "Nothing," she said. "Just that the weather's bad out over Pennsylvania."
## Part III
The call came on a Tuesday.
Not a dramatic Tuesday. Not a Thursday with its theatrical weight or a Friday with its superstitious dread. A Tuesday—ordinary, mundane, the kind of day that exists to be forgotten. Cate did not cry. She opened the shoebox. She took out the button (447). She held it until the brass dents her palm.
## Part IV
Evelyn came home from TAT at four in the afternoon.
She came home with a manila envelope in her hand—the flight manifest for Dick's last flight, obtained through a combination of maternal authority and the fact that she had once taught the TAT safety coordinator's daughter in third grade, and children remember their teachers even when they grow up and take clerical jobs at airlines.
She sat at the kitchen table, under the single bulb that hung from the ceiling, and read the manifest. Cate sat beside her, watching her mother's face the way one watches the weather: reading the clouds, trying to predict the storm.
Evelyn found the weather report attached to the manifest.

She read it once. She read it again. She set it down on the table.
"Your father didn't delay," she said.
