Fragmented Memory

The world was a series of strobe lights and static. Leo sat in the white-tiled office of Dr. Maya Sterling, the sound of a ticking clock echoing like a gunshot in the silence. He didn't remember how he had gotten here. He remembered a flash of red, the smell of ozone, and the feeling of a knife sliding between his ribs. Then, a void.

"Focus on the sound of my voice, Leo," Maya said. Her voice was a tether, the only thing keeping him from drifting into the grey. "We are going to find the anchor. Tell me the first thing you see."

*I see a rain-slicked street in Berlin. I am holding a suppressed HK MP5. There is a man in a grey suit. He is screaming, but there is no sound. I am not Leo. I am Asset 42.*

Leo blinked. He was back in the office. His hands were shaking.

"I... I was in Berlin," he whispered.

The process was a brutal excavation. Every session with Maya was a dive into a fractured psyche. Leo had Dissociative Identity Disorder, a byproduct of a "cognitive enhancement" program the military had used to create the perfect operative. His mind had been shattered into a dozen shards, each holding a piece of a different life, a different mission, a different sin.

The fragments came back in a chaotic surge. A rooftop in Dubai. A basement in Prague. The feeling of a child's hand in his—a memory that didn't fit, a sliver of warmth in a landscape of ice.

As the memories coalesced, the violence followed. Leo began to experience "bleed-through." He would be walking down 5th Avenue and suddenly find himself in a tactical sweep, his body moving with a lethal autonomy he couldn't control. He broke a man's arm in a coffee shop because the man's posture reminded him of an insurgent in the Hindu Kush. He became a danger to everyone around him, a weapon that had forgotten its safety catch.

"We are close to the core, Leo," Maya warned. "The final fragment. But you have to be careful. Some things are buried for a reason."

The final dive happened on a Tuesday. Leo closed his eyes and plummeted through the static. He saw the face of the man he had been ordered to kill ten years ago—a man who had been his own mentor, the only father figure he had ever known. He remembered the look of betrayal in the man's eyes, the way the blood had pooled on the white marble floor.

The truth was a physical blow. He hadn't been a hero; he had been a tool used to prune the agency's own garden. He had killed the only person who actually loved him, and then he had deleted the memory to survive.

The psychic shock was too much. The fragments didn't merge; they collided. Leo's mind, unable to reconcile the monster he was with the man he wanted to be, simply shut down.

Maya found him slumped in the chair, his expression one of profound, empty peace. The "Asset" was gone, and the "Man" had vanished with him. He was a blank slate, a human shell with no history and no future, a victim of the very efficiency he had been designed to embody.
