The Shadow Advisor

The city was a concrete throat, and we were the phlegm. That's how it felt living in the lairs of the Council. The Primates didn't rule with whips; they ruled with contracts, quotas, and a terrifyingly efficient bureaucracy. They called us "The Managed." We were the cleaners, the clerks, the invisible hands that kept their utopia running.

I wasn't like the others. I didn't want a bigger bowl of fruit or a softer bed of straw. I wanted the keys to the kingdom.

My name is Kane. I used to be a ghost in the machine, a specialist in asymmetric warfare for a government that no longer existed. When the Council captured me, they thought they had a broken animal. I let them believe it. For three years, I played the part of the "Perfect Pet." I learned their language, their etiquette, and most importantly, their insecurities.

I discovered that the High Council was not a monolith. It was a nest of vipers. The "Pure-Bloods" wanted to keep humans as mindless beasts; the "Evolutionists" wanted to integrate us as a servant class. I positioned myself exactly in the middle of that fracture.

I started small. A whispered secret to a junior secretary here, a forged report to a paranoid general there. I made myself indispensable. I became the man who knew where the bodies were buried and who had signed the checks.

"You have a remarkable intuition, Kane," Lord Vane had told me, leaning back in his leather chair, the smoke from his cigar curling like a snake. "Almost... human."

"I just want to be useful, my Lord," I replied, keeping my eyes downcast.

By the time Vane realized I was playing him, it was too late. I had woven myself into the very circuitry of their power. I didn't lead a rebellion; I led a merger. I manipulated the Pure-Bloods into purging the Evolutionists, and then I provided the "solution" to the resulting chaos.

Now, I sit in the shadow of the throne. Officially, I am still a pet, a curiosity kept for the amusement of the elite. But in reality, every decree that leaves the Council's office is written in my hand. I live in a cage of gold and silk, and I am the only one who knows where the lock is.

The irony is that I've become exactly what I hated. I look at the other humans in the pits, and I don't feel pity. I feel a cold, professional distance. I have won the game, but the prize is a world of monsters, and I am the biggest monster of them all.
