The Golden Ritual

The key is cold in your hand. It has a weight to it, heavy as a river stone, cold as the marrow in your brother’s bones. You are holding it. You have always held it. It is the only thing that is yours. The rest of the world is borrowed. The rest of you is rented.

The hallway stretches out before you. It is long. It is gray. The carpet is thin. It has worn down to the concrete in the center. You have walked this path a thousand times. You know the cracks. You know the smells. Old paper. Dust. The metallic tang of fear. It sits in the air like a film. You taste it on your tongue. You do not spit it out. You swallow. It is your portion.

Your name is not important. It is a label. A tag on a box. The box is empty. The tag remains. You are the prisoner. You are the sinner. You believe this because the walls say so. The walls are tall. They are made of stone. They do not blink. They do not lie. They only watch.

You stop at the door. Door number four. The wood is dark. It is oak. It smells of oil and time. You place your hand on the handle. Your fingers are stiff. They ache. You have been gripping too long. You have been holding the key too long. Your brother is in there. He is sleeping. Or he is dreaming. Or he is waiting.

You turn the key. The mechanism clicks. It is a loud sound. It echoes. It feels like a gun shot. You flinch. You should not have done that. You should have been silent. You are never silent. You are always loud with your guilt.

The door opens. It creaks. The sound is sharp. It cuts the air. You step inside. The room is small. There is a bed. There is a chair. There is a window. The window is barred. The bars are black. They are thick. They look like teeth.

Your brother is in the bed. He is awake. His eyes are open. They are red. They are wet. He is not crying. He is looking at you. He is waiting. He has always been waiting.

You close the door. The lock clicks. It is a final sound. It is the sound of a coffin closing. You stand there. You do not move. You are holding the key. You are holding the guilt. The air is thick. It is hard to breathe. You feel the weight of the ceiling. It is pressing down on your chest. You feel small. You feel crushed.

"You did it," he says. His voice is low. It is rough. It sounds like dry leaves.

"I did," you say. You do not look at him. You look at the floor. The floor is bare. It is cold. You can feel the cold through your shoes.

"Did you have to?" he asks.

"Yes," you say. "It was the rule."

"Whose rule?"

"Their rule."

You gesture to the walls. You gesture to the bars. You gesture to the void. You are pointing at the system. The system is invisible. The system is everywhere. It is the air. It is the ground. It is the law. You obeyed the law. You kept the order. You maintained the structure. You were a good servant. You were a good prisoner.

Your brother sits up. The bed creaks. The springs groan. He looks old. He looks tired. His hair is white. It was not white yesterday. It is white now. Time moves fast in here. Time moves slow outside. You are out of sync. You are out of tune.

"You held the key," he says.

"Yes."

"You kept me here."

"Yes."

"Why?"

You do not have an answer. You never have an answer. The questions are traps. The answers are knives. You cut yourself trying to explain. You cut yourself trying to justify. You are the sinner. You are the one who locked the door. You are the one who turned the key. You are the one who holds the weight.

"I was protecting you," you say. The words taste like ash.

"From what?" he asks.

"From them."

"From who?"

You point to the ceiling. You point to the floor. You point to the shadows. They are the ones. They are the ones who watch. They are the ones who judge. They are the ones who decide. You are the tool. You are the hand. You are the finger that presses the button.

Your brother looks at the key. He looks at your hand. He sees the metal. He sees the cold. He sees the grip. His eyes widen. A tear rolls down his cheek. It falls. It hits the sheet. It leaves a dark spot.

"You are the monster," he says.

"No," you say. "I am the jailer. They are the monsters."

"Are you?" he asks. "Or are you the same?"

The question hangs in the air. It is heavy. It is sharp. It stings. You want to deny it. You want to shout. You want to break the window. You want to break the bars. You want to break the walls. But you cannot. You are bound. You are tied. You are held.

You look at your hands. They are shaking. The key is slipping. It is slipping from your fingers. You grip it tighter. Your knuckles turn white. You are afraid. You are afraid of losing it. If you lose the key, you lose the power. If you lose the power, you lose yourself.

Your brother reaches out. He reaches for the key. His hand is thin. It is bony. It is pale. He wants it. He wants the weight. He wants the burden. He wants to share the pain.

"Give it to me," he says.

You pull your hand back. You clench your fist. The key bites into your palm. It hurts. The pain is sharp. The pain is real. You like the pain. It reminds you that you are alive. It reminds you that you are here.

"No," you say.

"Please," he says.

"No."

"Why?"

"Because I am the one who must do it."

You are lying. You know you are lying. You are not the one who must do it. You are the one who chose to do it. You chose to be the wall. You chose to be the lock. You chose to be the silent keeper. You chose to be the sinner.

Your brother stops reaching. He pulls his hand back. He curls into himself. He makes himself small. He disappears into the bed. He is gone. He is no longer there. He is only the shape. He is only the memory.

You stand in the room. The air is still. The dust motes dance. They are golden. They are bright. They are the only beautiful thing in the room. They catch the light. They glow. They are the golden ritual. They are the reward for your patience. They are the price of your silence.

You walk to the window. You look out. The sky is gray. The clouds are low. They are heavy. They are waiting to fall. You wait for the rain. You wait for the storm. You wait for the end.

You think about your childhood. You think about the garden. You think about the roses. They were red. They were thorny. They were beautiful. Your mother picked them. She gave them to your father. They were a gift. They were a symbol. They were a love.

Your father died. He died young. He died alone. He died in a room like this one. He died with a key in his hand. He died with a weight in his heart. He died with a secret in his mouth. You were there. You watched. You did not cry. You did not speak. You held the key. You held the secret. You held the silence.

Now it is your turn. Now it is your burden. Now it is your life. You are the brother. You are the keeper. You are the wall.

You turn around. Your brother is watching you. His eyes are clear. They are sad. They are full of understanding. He knows. He has always known. He knows that you are not the monster. He knows that you are not the sinner. He knows that you are the victim. He knows that you are the one who is trapped.

He smiles. It is a small smile. It is a weak smile. It is a sad smile. But it is real. It is true. It is the only thing that is true.

"Let go," he says.

You look at the key. You look at your hand. You look at the blood. It is bright. It is red. It is warm. It is life. It is the end.

You open your hand.

The key falls.

It hits the floor. It makes a sound. It is a small sound. It is a clear sound. It is the sound of a chain breaking. It is the sound of a door opening. It is the sound of a heart stopping.

You do not pick it up. You leave it there. It lies in the dust. It lies in the dark. It lies in the cold. It is no longer yours. It is no longer his. It is the property of the floor. It is the property of the past. It is the property of the silence.

You walk to the door. You open it. You step out. You do not lock it. You leave it open. The light comes in. It is bright. It is harsh. It burns your eyes. You squint. You feel the warmth. It is strange. It is foreign. It is new.

You walk down the hallway. Your feet are bare. You took off your shoes. You forgot them. You do not care. You are light. You are free. You are empty.

You reach the end of the hall. You reach the exit. You push the door. It is heavy. It is cold. It is iron. You push with all your might. You push with all your strength. You push with all your soul.

The door opens.

The air rushes in. It is cold. It is sharp. It is alive. It fills your lungs. It fills your blood. It fills your bones. You breathe. You breathe deep. You breathe hard. You breathe forever.

You step out.

The world is vast. The world is gray. The world is silent.

You are alone.

You are free.

You are nothing.

You walk into the mist. You walk into the fog. You walk into the void. You do not look back. You do not look down. You do not look at the key. You do not look at the room. You do not look at your brother.

You are gone.

The key remains.

The door remains.

The wall remains.

The ritual is done.

The golden light fades.

The silence stays.
