The Distant Cartograph
The map is rolled tight. You hold it in your left hand. The parchment is dry. It smells of dust and old blood. You are in the tower. The stone is cold. It bites into your back. You press against it.
The door opens.
It is a heavy oak door. Iron bands hold it shut. The hinges groan. A sound like a dying man. Thomas walks in. He wears a cloak of grey wool. The mud is caked on his boots. It is wet. It drips onto the flagstones.
He does not look at you. He looks at the window. The sky is black. Rain streaks the glass.
"Did you come?" Thomas asks.
His voice is low. It is rough. Like sand on stone.
"Yes," you say.
You do not move. You keep the map in your hand. Your fingers are white. You grip it hard. The paper rustles. It is a small sound. But it fills the room.
Thomas turns to you. His face is pale. There is a bruise on his jaw. It is yellowing. It is healing. He looks tired. He looks old. He is not old. He is young. But he looks old.
"You have the map," he says.
"I have it."
"Good."
He sits down. He sits on the stool. The wood creaks under him. He crosses his legs. He rubs his hands together. The skin is red. It is cracked.
"We must go," he says.
"Where?"
"Down. Into the valley. To the gate."
"The gate is closed."
"It is not closed. It is locked. There is a difference. A lock can be broken. A closed gate is a choice. A lock is a fact."
You nod. You do not understand. You do not care. You hold the map. You look at your hands. They are trembling. You stop them. You force them to be still.
"Thomas," you say.
He looks up. His eyes are dark. They are deep. Like wells.
"I am not a soldier," you say.
The words are hard. They sit in the air. They do not move. They do not float. They fall. They land on the floor.
Thomas smiles. It is a small smile. It does not reach his eyes.
"No," he says. "You are not."
"You are a soldier," you say.
"Yes."
"You have the sword. You have the armor. You have the skill."
"I have the duty."
"Duty." You say the word. It tastes like iron. You spit it out. It is not yours. It is heavy. It is not light. It is not yours.
"I am a scholar," you say. "I read the stars. I chart the lands. I do not kill. I do not bleed. I am not made for this."
Thomas stands up. He moves toward you. The floorboards do not creak. He is light. He is quiet.
"Look at me," he says.
You look at him. You do not look away. You look into his eyes. They are steady. They are calm.
"You think you are a scholar," Thomas says. "You think that is who you are. You think the map is your life. You think the ink is your blood. But look at your hands."
You look at your hands. They are still shaking. You hide them. You put them behind your back.
"Your hands shake," Thomas says. "Not from fear. From power. You hold the map. You hold the truth. But you do not use it. You hide it. You hide it in this tower. You hide it in your mind. You are a soldier who has forgotten how to fight."
"No," you say. "I am a man who chooses not to fight."
"Is that a choice? Or is it a fear?"
It is a question. It hangs in the air. It is sharp. It cuts.
You do not answer. You look at the floor. The stone is grey. It is wet. There is a crack in the center. It runs from the door to the window. It is long. It is thin. It is like a scar.
"Thomas," you say. "I loved you. I still love you. I do not want to hurt you. I do not want to kill you. I do not want to be you."
Thomas stops. He stands still. He listens. The rain beats against the window. It is a drum. It is a heartbeat.
"I know," he says.
"You know?"
"Yes. I have always known. You are not me. You are softer. You are kinder. You are better. But you are weak. And in this world, kindness is a weakness. Kindness is a death. You will die in this tower. You will die with the map. And the world will go on. And the evil will go on. And you will be gone."
"I would rather be gone," you say. "Than be a monster."
"Monsters are made," Thomas says. "They are not born. They are made by fear. They are made by pain. They are made by the need to survive. If you do not survive, you are nothing. If you do not fight, you are nothing. If you do not kill, you are nothing."
You shake your head. "No. I am something. I am a man. I have a name. I have a life. I have a love. That is enough."
"Is it?" Thomas asks. "Is it enough to save the valley? Is it enough to save the people? Is it enough to save yourself?"
You look at the map. You unroll it. The paper is thin. It is fragile. You can see the light through it. The lines are black. They are sharp. They are precise. They are the world. They are the truth.
"I will not fight," you say.
"Then you must die."
"Then I will die."
Thomas looks at you. He looks at the map. He looks at his own hands. He flexes his fingers. The skin is tight. The knuckles are white.
"I cannot let you die," he says.
"I will not let you kill me."
"Then what will you do?"
"I will give you the map."
Thomas stares at you. His mouth opens. It closes. It opens again.
"The map," he says.
"Yes."
"You will give it to me?"
"I will give it to you. You can use it. You can go. You can fight. You can kill. But I will not fight. I will not kill. I will stay here. I will stay in this tower. I will keep the silence."
Thomas steps forward. He takes the map from your hand. His fingers touch yours. It is a spark. It is a shock. It is electric. It is warm.
"Are you sure?" he asks.
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because you are stronger. Because you are brave. Because you are alive. I am not. I am a ghost. I am a memory. I am a shadow. You are the light. You are the fire. I am the ash."
Thomas holds the map. He rolls it up. He tucks it into his belt. He pulls out his sword. It is a long blade. It is sharp. It is dark. It is wet.
"Goodbye," he says.
"Goodbye," you say.
He turns. He walks to the door. He pushes it open. The wind rushes in. It is cold. It is wet. It carries the smell of rain. It carries the smell of earth. It carries the smell of death.
Thomas walks out.
The door closes.
The latch falls.
The sound is final.
It is heavy.
It is deep.
You are alone.
You are in the tower.
The stone is cold.
You press against it.
You look at your hands.
They are still.
They are empty.
You look at the window.
The sky is black.
The rain is falling.
It is steady.
It is constant.
It is endless.
You take a breath.
The air is thin.
It is cold.
It is sharp.
You hold the breath.
You hold the pain.
You hold the fear.
You let it go.
You let it fall.
You let it die.
You are not a soldier.
You are not a monster.
You are a man.
You are a scholar.
You are a ghost.
You are a memory.
You are a shadow.
You are the ash.
And the ash is enough.
The rain beats against the glass.
It is a drum.
It is a heartbeat.
It is a song.
It is a cry.
It is a prayer.
It is a plea.
It is a warning.
It is a promise.
It is a truth.
You close your eyes.
You feel the stone.
You feel the cold.
You feel the dark.
You feel the silence.
You are here.
You are alive.
You are free.
The map is gone.
The sword is gone.
The man is gone.
You are here.
You are alone.
You are still.
You are quiet.
You are safe.
You are dead.
You are gone.
The rain stops.
The sky is light.
The sun is up.
The tower is bright.
The door is open.
The wind is warm.
The air is sweet.
The birds are singing.
The flowers are blooming.
The world is new.
The world is old.
The world is the same.
You are the same.
You are different.
You are you.
You are here.
You are now.
You are real.
You are true.
You are whole.
You are complete.
You are free.
You are alive.
You are gone.
