The Distant Crown

The rain had not stopped for three days, a persistent, gray weeping that turned the cobblestones of the ancient city of Aethelgard into slick, black mirrors reflecting the low, bruised sky above, and in the center of the main square, where the fountain’s water had long since turned to mud, stood Sir Julian Thorne, a man whose armor was dented and rusted from a campaign fought a century prior, though he felt the weight of the steel upon his shoulders as if it had been forged only moments ago for the specific purpose of holding him upright in the face of an enemy he could not see but could certainly feel pressing against the back of his neck.

"You are late, my lord," said the voice that came from nowhere and everywhere, a voice that sounded like the grinding of millstones and the whisper of dry leaves, and Julian did not turn because he knew that to turn would be to admit that the thing speaking to him had a form, and if it had a form, it could be killed, and if it could be killed, the cycle would break, and the cycle, he knew with a bone-deep certainty that tasted of iron and old blood, was not meant to break but to continue, endless and inevitable like the tide that eroded the cliffs of the northern coast.

"I am never late," Julian replied, his voice rough from disuse, for he had not spoken in what felt like years, only the silent, internal recitation of the vows he had made to the King, a King who was no more than a shadow in his mind, a ghost he wore on his head like a crown of thorns, and he gripped the hilt of his sword, a blade so old it had forgotten the shape of the hands that had once wielded it, and he felt the familiar, electric hum of the metal responding to his anger, a anger that was not directed at the voice in the air but at himself, at the part of him that still believed he could win, that still believed there was a difference between the man who died and the man who woke, a difference that the world, in its infinite cruelty, refused to acknowledge.

The square was empty, save for the pigeons that picked at the mud with their beady, indifferent eyes, birds that had lived and died in this square a thousand times over, their lives as brief and meaningless as the lives of the men who fought for the stones they roosted upon, and Julian watched them, his eyes tracing their movements with the precision of a general studying a battlefield, for he had learned, in his many deaths and many wakes, that the small things were the only things that remained constant, the only things that did not change when the world shifted around him like a card house in a gale, and he thought of his daughter, Elara, who had died before he was even born, a fact that the world knew but he did not, a fact that was etched into the very fabric of his existence, a scar that never healed, a wound that festered in the dark corners of his mind, and he felt a surge of affection so intense it was painful, a devotion so obsessive it bordered on madness, for he loved her with a love that had no end, a love that was not directed at a person but at an idea, at the concept of her, at the memory of a memory that had never existed, and this love was his anchor, his tether to the only thing that mattered in a world that was nothing but a series of reflections and echoes.

The voice spoke again, closer now, almost intimate, "You seek the crown, Sir Julian, but you are the crown, and you are the kingdom, and you are the enemy, and you cannot defeat what you are, for to defeat it would be to cease to exist, and you do not wish to cease to exist, do you, for you are too busy loving her, too busy hating yourself, too busy fighting a war that has already been lost."

Julian did not answer, for he knew that any answer would be a lie, and he had run out of lies, and he drew his sword, the blade singing as it left the scabbard, a sound that was both beautiful and terrible, a sound that spoke of endings and beginnings, of life and death, of the eternal dance that the universe performed in the dark, and he walked toward the center of the square, where the fountain stood, and as he walked, the mud beneath his boots began to change, turning from brown to gold, from wet to dry, from earth to stone, and the rain stopped, and the sky cleared, revealing a sun that was not the sun he knew, a sun that was white and cold and distant, like the eye of a god who had long since turned away from the mortal realm, and he felt a sense of relief, a sense of lightness, as if the weight of his armor had lifted, as if the weight of his soul had finally been set down, and he smiled, a smile that did not reach his eyes, for his eyes were still filled with tears, with the tears of a man who had finally understood the truth, a truth that was so simple it was cruel, a truth that he had been fighting for a hundred years, a truth that was not a defeat but a victory, a truth that was not an end but a beginning, a truth that was the crown he had been seeking, a truth that was the self he had been trying to conquer, a truth that was the love he had been trying to hold onto, a truth that was everything and nothing, a truth that was the only thing that was real, a truth that was the only thing that mattered, a truth that was the only thing that was left.

He reached the center of the square, and he stopped, and he looked up at the white sun, and he saw his reflection in the eyes of the pigeons, and he saw that he was not a man, but a mirror, a mirror that reflected the world, and the world was empty, and the world was full, and the world was him, and he was the world, and he was the crown, and the crown was him, and he was the enemy, and the enemy
