The Faded Root

You wear the coat. It is wool. Heavy. Gray. It smells of dust and old iron. You have worn it for three days. The collar chafes your neck. You do not adjust it. You cannot. It is part of you now. Or it is eating you. You do not know which.

The train moves. The wheels click. Click. Click. You sit by the window. The glass is dirty. You trace a circle with your finger. Outside, the fields are brown. Dead. Winter has come early. The sky is the color of wet ash. You watch the trees go by. They are skeletons. Bare branches reach up. Like hands. Like fingers grasping for something that is not there.

You are going to the estate. Blackwood Manor. It sits on a hill. It is the center of power. The center of the world. For you, it is a prison. But today, it is a chance. You carry the coat. You carry the secret. The secret is in the lining. Stitched tight. Close to your skin.

The train slows. You stand up. Your knees are stiff. You step onto the platform. The air is cold. It bites your face. You breathe in. It hurts. You breathe out. It forms a cloud. You walk toward the car. It is black. Polished. The driver is waiting. He does not look at you. He knows you. Everyone knows you now. You are the ghost in the gray wool.

The car drives up the hill. The road is winding. You watch the trees pass. They blur. The manor appears. It is large. Stone. Dark. Windows glow like yellow eyes. You feel a pull. A magnetic drag in your chest. It is fear. It is hope. It is both.

The door opens. You step out. The gravel crunches under your shoes. You walk to the front door. It is oak. Massive. Carved with lions. You do not knock. You push. The door swings open. It creaks. The sound is long. Low. It goes into the house. Into the walls.

You are in the foyer. The floor is marble. Cold. It reflects your face. You do not recognize it. The eyes are red. The skin is pale. You straighten your back. You lift your chin. You walk forward. The hall is long. Portraits line the walls. Faces stare at you. They are old. They are dead. They watch you. They judge you. You do not look at them. You look at the end of the hall. There is a door. Double doors. Brass handles.

You walk toward them. Your heart beats. Thump. Thump. Thump. It is loud. You can hear it in your ears. You reach the doors. You push them open.

The room is vast. Fireplace. Fire. Smoke. The air is thick. Warm. Smoky. In the center, a table. Long. Oak. Seated at the head is Lord Alistair Thorne. He is old. His hair is white. His eyes are sharp. Blue. Like ice. He does not look up. He is pouring wine. The glass is crystal. The wine is red. Dark. He pours. The sound is soft. Glug. Glug.

"Enter," he says. His voice is smooth. Cold.

You step inside. You close the door behind you. The click is sharp. You stand in the middle of the room. Your hands are at your sides. The coat is tight. You feel the stitch. The secret. It burns.

"Who are you?" Thorne asks. He does not look up. He is still pouring.

"My name is Elias," you say. Your voice is steady. You are surprised. You are not afraid. Or you are so afraid that fear has left.

"Elias," Thorne repeats. He sets the bottle down. He looks at you. His eyes are hard. "I do not know an Elias."

"I was here before," you say. "Long ago. I served you. I was a servant. Then I was a prisoner. Then I was... gone."

Thorne leans back. He crosses his legs. He smiles. It is a thin smile. "You are a ghost, Elias. Ghosts do not wear wool coats."

"I am not a ghost," you say. "I am flesh. I am blood. I am here."

"Here is a place," Thorne says. "But are you? Or are you a memory? A mistake? A glitch in the system?"

"I am the truth," you say.

The truth. The word hangs in the air. It is heavy. Thorne laughs. It is a dry sound. Like leaves scraping on stone.

"Truth is a luxury," Thorne says. "We have plenty of lies. We have the comfort of lies. Why do you want to disrupt that?"

"Because you killed me," you say.

The room goes silent. The fire pops. A spark flies up. It dies in the smoke. Thorne’s face changes. The smile fades. His eyes narrow.

"I killed you?" he asks. "When?"

"Three years ago. In the cellar. You broke my legs. You left me to die. I crawled out. I ran. I hid. I waited. And now I am here."

Thorne stands up. He is tall. He walks around the table. He stops in front of you. He is close. You can smell his perfume. Expensive. Sharp. It smells of power.

"You are lying," Thorne says. "I have no memory of you. You were never here. You are a figment. A delusion. The mind creates monsters to punish itself. You are one of them."

"Look at me," you say. "Look at my face."

He does not. He looks at your coat. His eyes narrow again. He reaches out. His hand is thin. Bony. He grabs the lapel. He pulls. The fabric tears.

There is a sound. A rip. The lining gives way.

A bundle falls to the floor. It is small. Wrapped in cloth. Thorne looks down. He picks it up. He opens the cloth.

His face goes pale. The color drains from it. His hands shake. He drops the bundle. It hits the floor. It is a ring. Gold. Simple. It is the ring he gave to his wife. It is the ring he used to sign the order. The order that killed you.

"Impossible," he whispers.

"Remember?" you ask.

He looks at you. His eyes are wide. Fear is in them. Real fear. Not the performative fear of a lord. The fear of a man who has been caught.

"I did not know," he says. "I did not know it was you. I thought it was a servant. Just a servant. I did not know your name."

"Names matter," you say. "Names give us weight. Without a name, we are nothing. You made me nothing. Now I am here. I have a name. I am Elias."

Thorne backs away. He hits the table. The glasses rattle. He looks at the door. He wants to run. He cannot. He is trapped. Not by the room. By the truth.

"You cannot change the past," Thorne says. His voice is small. Broken. "You cannot bring back the dead."

"I am not dead," you say. "I am alive. I am the consequence. I am the debt. And I am here to collect."

Thorne sits down. He slumps. His shoulders drop. He looks old. Older than before. He looks like a child.

"Take it," he says. "Take the house. Take the money. Take what you want. Just go. Leave me be."

"I do not want your money," you say. "I do not want your house. I want you to remember. I want you to carry it. I want you to know that your power is built on my pain. And I am the proof."

Thorne closes his eyes. A tear rolls down his cheek. It is a single tear. It catches the light.

"I am sorry," he says.

"Sorry is not enough," you say. "But it is a start."

You turn away. You walk to the door. You stop. You look back. Thorne is still sitting. He is staring at the floor. He looks defeated. Not angry. Not defiant. Just defeated.

You walk out. The hall is dark. You do not light a lamp. You do not need one. You know the way. You have walked it in your dreams. A thousand times.

You reach the front door. You push it open. The cold hits you. It is sharp. Clean. You step out. The night is dark. The stars are out. They are bright. Cold. You look up. You see the moon. It is full. White. It watches you.

You walk down the hill. The car is gone. The driver is gone. You are alone. You have the coat. You have the name. You have the memory.

You walk to the train station. It is far. Your legs are tired. But you do not stop. You keep walking. The gravel crunches under your feet. The sound is rhythmic. Steady. It matches your heartbeat.

You reach the station. It is empty. The train is waiting. The lights are on. You board. You sit by the window. You look at your hands. They are steady. You look at the coat. You touch the tear. The place where the ring fell out. The place where the secret was.

It is empty now. The coat is just wool. Just gray. Just heavy.

The train starts to move. The wheels click. Click. Click. You close your eyes. You feel the vibration. It goes through your bones. It is a hum. A low tone. It is the sound of the world turning.

You think of Thorne. You think of the ring. You think of the cellar. The cold. The pain. It is all there. In the coat. In the tear. In the silence.

You do not hate him anymore. Hate is a fire. It burns. It consumes. You do not want to be consumed. You want to be clear. You want to be still.

The train passes a field. The grass is black. The sky is gray. You watch the trees go by. They are the same. Bare. Reaching. Grasping.

You realize something. The coat did not protect you. The coat did not transform you. The coat was just a container. A vessel for the secret. Now the secret is out. The vessel is empty.

You are not the prisoner anymore. You are not the ghost. You are Elias. You are the man who walked out of the dark. You are the man who carried the weight. And now you are putting it down.

You take off the coat. You fold it. You place it on the seat beside you. You are wearing only a shirt. It is thin. White. It is clean.

The air is cold. You shiver. But you do not pull the coat back on. You sit in the cold. You breathe. The air fills your lungs. It is sharp. It is alive.

You look out the window. The world is passing. The lights of the town blink. They go by. They disappear. You are moving away. You are leaving the power. Leaving the house. Leaving the name.

You are not defined by the man who hurt you. You are not defined by the secret you carried. You are defined by your choice. The choice to walk away. The choice to let go.

The train moves faster. The click is louder. Faster. It is a song. A rhythm. You sway with it. Your body moves. Your mind is quiet.

You think of the ring. It is on the floor of the manor. Thorne will find it. Or he will not. It does not matter. The truth is out. It is in the air. It is in the wind. It is in the space between you and the past.

You close your eyes again. You do not sleep. You just rest. You let the rhythm take you. You let the cold touch your skin. You let the moment be what it is.

The train arrives at the next station. It is small. Dark. You do not get off. You stay. You watch the platform pass. You watch the empty tracks.

You are moving. You are free. Not free from the past. The past is with you. It is in your bones. But you are not trapped by it. You are the one who holds the key. And you have opened the door.

You open your eyes. The night is deep. The stars are watching. You are small. You are human. You are alive.

The train clicks. Click. Click. You are gone.
