The Distant Blade

The snow fell like ash.

It buried the keep. It buried the world.

Captain Elias Thorne stood on the balcony. He wore his coat. The coat was red. It was once the color of blood. Now it was the color of rust.

He looked at his hands. They shook.

The cold was a living thing. It bit. It chewed. It entered the bone.

Elias was a man of law. He was a man of order. In this kingdom, order was a myth. The King was sick. The sickness was not of the body. It was of the soul. The sickness was the Truth.

To know the Truth was to die.

Elias knew the Truth.

He had seen the stars. He had read the stars. He knew when the sun would stop. He knew when the ice would claim the capital. He knew the exact hour of the end.

This knowledge was a curse.

It sat in his chest like a stone. It weighed him down. It made him heavy. It made him slow.

He missed his son.

His son, Julian.

Julian was in the hall below. Julian was safe. Or so Elias believed.

Elias turned. He went inside.

The fire in the great hall was low. The logs popped. They spat sparks. The sparks died in the dark.

The King sat on the throne. The throne was made of iron. The iron was cold.

The King looked at Elias. The King’s eyes were wide. They were white. They were empty.

"You know," the King said. His voice was a whisper. It was like dry leaves. "You know the hour."

Elias did not speak. He bowed. His spine was straight. His knees were locked. He was a statue. He was iron.

"I do, my liege," Elias said. His voice was flat. It was hard.

"Good," the King said. "Then you will protect me. You will keep the secret. You will ensure the court does not know. If they know, they will flee. If they flee, the city falls. If the city falls, we die."

Elias nodded. "As you command."

It was a lie.

Elias wanted to scream. He wanted to run. He wanted to tell them all. He wanted to save them.

But he could not.

The law said he could not. The oath said he could not. The duty said he could not.

He was bound. He was chained. The chains were invisible. They were made of words.

He looked at the court. They stood in silence. They were tall. They were proud. They were fools.

They did not know.

They drank their wine. They laughed. They loved. They lived.

They did not know that the sun was dying.

Elias felt a tear roll down his cheek. He wiped it away. He was a soldier. Soldiers do not cry.

He went to his quarters. The room was small. The bed was narrow. The sheets were clean.

He sat on the edge of the bed. He took off his boots. His feet were numb.

He thought of Julian.

Julian was young. Julian was bright. Julian had eyes like the sky.

Elias had not seen his son in days.

He missed him.

He missed the sound of his voice. He missed the smell of his hair. He missed the weight of him.

The love was a fire. It burned. It consumed. It was too much.

Elias closed his eyes.

He heard a knock at the door.

It was soft. It was hesitant.

Elias opened the door.

Julian stood there.

He was small. He was pale. He looked scared.

"Father," Julian said.

Elias felt his heart stop.

"Come in," Elias said. His voice was a rumble.

Julian entered. He closed the door. He leaned against it. He slid down to the floor. He sat in the dark.

"Father," Julian said. "I heard the King."

Elias froze.

"What did you hear?" Elias asked.

"He said you know," Julian said. "He said you know the end. He said you know when we die."

Elias did not move. He stood in the doorway. The light from the corridor cut across his face. It made him look like a ghost.

"Julian," Elias said. "Go back to bed."

"No," Julian said. "Tell me."

"No."

"Tell me, Father."

"Why?"

"Because I need to know."

Elias looked at him. He saw the fear in his son’s eyes. He saw the need. He saw the pain.

He wanted to lie. He wanted to say it was nothing. He wanted to say the King was joking.

He could not.

The Truth was heavy. The Truth was sharp.

"Julian," Elias said. "The world is ending."

Julian’s face crumpled.

"When?" Julian asked.

"Tomorrow," Elias said. "At noon."

Julian looked at him. He did not blink.

"How do you know?" Julian asked.

"The stars," Elias said.

"Stars," Julian said. "Stars are just light. Light is old. Light is far. It is not real."

"It is real to me," Elias said.

"Then it is a curse," Julian said. "To know the end. To know the time. It is a curse, Father."

Elias felt a pang in his chest. It was sharp. It was deep.

"Yes," Elias said. "It is a curse."

"Can we stop it?" Julian asked.

"No."

"Can we run?" Julian asked.

"No."

"Then why are we here?" Julian asked.

"Because we are duty," Elias said.

"Duty," Julian said. "Duty is a cage."

"Yes," Elias said.

"Break the cage," Julian said.

"I cannot."

"Why?"

"Because I am the law."

"The law is dead," Julian said. "The law is a lie. The law is a tool. Use it. Use it to save us."

Elias looked at his son. He saw the fire in him. He saw the rebellion. He saw the future.

He wanted to say yes. He wanted to run. He wanted to take his son and flee into the snow. He wanted to leave the court. He wanted to leave the King. He wanted to live.

But he could not.

He was bound.

"Julian," Elias said. "I love you."

"I know," Julian said. "But you are a coward."

The words hit Elias. They were like swords. They pierced him.

He did not flinch. He did not react.

He felt the truth in the words.

He was a coward.

He was afraid.

He was afraid of the dark. He was afraid of the silence. He was afraid of the end.

He stayed because he was afraid to leave.

He stayed because he was afraid to fail.

He stayed because he was afraid to be free.

"Go," Elias said. His voice was weak. "Go to bed, Julian."

Julian stood up. He looked at his father. He looked at him with pity.

"You are losing, Father," Julian said. "You are losing everything."

Julian walked away.

The door closed.

Elias was alone.

He sat on the bed. He put his head in his hands.

He wept.

He wept for his son. He wept for his duty. He wept for his life.

He wept for the world.

The snow fell outside. It covered the windows. It covered the sky.

It covered everything.

Elias stood up. He walked to the window. He looked out.

The keep was dark. The court was dark. The world was dark.

He felt the weight of the knowledge. It was unbearable.

He had to do something.

He had to break the curse.

He had to share the pain.

He went to the hall.

The court was still there. They were drinking. They were talking.

Elias walked into the center of the room.

The room went quiet.

They looked at him.

The King looked at him.

Elias spoke.

"My liege," Elias said. "My lords. My ladies."

His voice was clear. It was strong. It was final.

"The sun is dying."

The room erupted.

They shouted. They screamed. They cursed.

The King stood up. He pointed at Elias.

"Traitor!" the King shouted. "You break the law! You break the oath!"

Elias did not move.

"I break the curse," Elias said.

"You break the peace!" the King shouted.

"I break the lie!" Elias said.

The guards moved. They drew their swords.

Elias looked at them. He looked at the King. He looked at his son.

Julian stood in the back. He was not scared. He was calm. He was watching.

Elias smiled.

It was a sad smile. It was a tired smile.

"I am sorry," Elias said.

"For what?" the King asked.

"For the knowledge," Elias said. "For the weight. For the silence."

Elias looked at his coat.

The red coat.

The rust.

The blood.

He took off his coat.

He held it in his hands.

It was heavy.

It was warm.

It was alive.

He looked at the coat. It was a mirror. It was his soul. It was his burden.

He dropped it.

The coat hit the floor.

It spread out.

It was red.

It was bright.

It was beautiful.

The guards hesitated.

Elias stood there. He was bare-chested. He was vulnerable. He was free.

The cold hit him.

It was sharp.

It was clear.

It was honest.

He felt the air on his skin.

He felt the life in him.

He felt the end.

It was coming.

It was here.

He was not afraid.

He was not sorry.

He was ready.

The King raised his hand.

"Seize him," the King said.

The guards moved.

Elias did not resist.

He let them take him.

He let them bind him.

He let them drag him.

He looked at Julian.

Julian looked at him.

There was no anger. There was no fear.

There was only love.

There was only acceptance.

Elias closed his eyes.

He opened his mouth.

He breathed.

The air was cold.

The air was sweet.

He was gone.

He was free.

The snow fell.

It covered the keep.

It covered the world.

It covered the past.

It covered the future.

It covered the truth.

It covered the lie.

It covered everything.

The silence was loud.

The silence was deep.

The silence was eternal.

Elias Thorne was gone.

His son remained.

The sun did not rise.

The world ended.

But the love remained.

The love was the blade.

The love was the light.

The love was the truth.

It cut through the dark.

It cut through the fear.

It cut through the silence.

It was the only thing that mattered.

It was the only thing that was real.

It was the only thing that was left.

The snow kept falling.

It never stopped.

It never ended.

It just kept falling.
