The Pale Meridian

You hear the zipper. It is a long, metallic scream. It tears through the quiet of the bedroom. You are lying in the dark. The sheets are cold. You do not move. You count the seconds. One. Two. Three.

The door creaks open. Light spills in. It is thin. It is pale. It cuts across the floorboards. It stops at your feet.

Eleanor stands there. She holds the jacket. It is black. It is wool. It is heavy. It was your father’s. It was your grandfather’s before him. The fabric is worn soft at the elbows. It smells of old tobacco and rain. She holds it up. She shakes it. Dust motes dance in the beam.

"Why?" she asks. Her voice is low. It is steady. It does not break. It is the voice of a woman who has decided something. She has made her choice. You can hear it in the air. It is final.

"Because I have to," you say. Your voice is rough. It is dry. You sit up. The sheets slide down. Your skin is bare. It is pale in the gloom. You look at her. She is beautiful. She is terrified. She is yours.

"You are leaving," she says. It is not a question.

"I am going on duty," you say. "The border."

"The border," she repeats. The word sounds foreign. It sounds wrong. "We were not to go."

"We are officers. We do not choose."

"You chose this life. You chose the badge." She steps closer. The light catches her hair. It is silver now. It was brown when we met. It was brown when we married. It is silver now. Time has taken it from us. Time has taken your youth. It has taken our strength. But it has not taken the jacket. The jacket is still there. The jacket is waiting.

"Put it on," she says. "I want to see you."

You reach for it. Your hand trembles. You take the sleeve. The wool is warm. It holds the heat of her body. It holds the heat of the night. You slide your arm in. You button it. The buttons are brass. They are cold. They click against your chest. They sound like small bones breaking.

She watches you. Her eyes are wet. She does not blink. She looks at the collar. She looks at the lapel. She touches it. Her finger traces the edge. It is a small gesture. It is the most violent thing I have ever seen.

"It fits," she says. "It still fits."

"It is heavy," you say.

"It is yours."

"You should not have brought it."

"I could not leave it." She steps back. She crosses her arms. She is trying to hold herself together. She is failing. The fabric of her dress is thin. It is white. It is the color of the light. It is the color of the snow outside.

"We have to talk," she says.

"There is no time."

"There is always time. For this." She points at the jacket. "For us."

You look at the clock. It is four in the morning. The house is silent. The wind is howling. It sounds like a beast. It wants to get in. It wants to tear the walls down. You know what is waiting for you. You know what you will find. You know what you will do. You know what they will say. You know what they will do to you.

You know the truth.

You have always known the truth. That is the curse. To know is to bleed. To see is to break. You have seen the faces. You have seen the files. You have seen the names. You know who they are. You know who they want to be. You know who they are not.

You know that the system is broken. You know that the law is a lie. You know that the badge is a mask. You know that the man in the mirror is a stranger.

"I cannot save them," you say.

"You can save us," she says.

"I can save nothing."

"Then why are you wearing that coat?"

"It is my armor."

"It is my shroud."

The words hit you. They are sharp. They are cold. They pierce the wool. They pierce the skin. You feel them. You feel the pain. You feel the loss.

"I am leaving," you say.

"I know."

"I love you."

"I know."

She steps forward. She takes the jacket. She holds it. She holds it against her face. She smells it. She closes her eyes. She breathes in. She breathes out. She is holding your ghost. She is holding your future. She is holding your end.

"Take it off," she says.

"What?"

"Take it off. Leave it here."

"I cannot."

"You must."

"If I leave it, I am not me."

"Then you are a thing. You are a tool. You are a weapon." She looks at you. Her eyes are fierce. They are bright. They are full of fire. "I do not want a weapon. I want my husband."

You look at her. You look at the jacket. You look at your hands. They are shaking. They are dirty. They are blood-stained. Not with blood. With ink. With dust. With time.

You unbutton the first button. It is hard. It is stiff. You unbutton the second. You unbutton the third. The coat hangs open. The lining is dark. It is velvet. It is soft. It is warm.

You slide your arms out. The coat falls. It falls to the floor. It makes a sound. It is a heavy thud. It is a death knell. It is the end of the world.

You stand there. You are naked. You are small. You are weak. You are afraid. You are human.

She looks at you. She smiles. It is a sad smile. It is a kind smile. It is the smile of a woman who has lost everything and found something else.

"Good," she says.

"What is good?"

"This. This is good. This is us."

You step forward. You touch her face. Her skin is warm. Her eyes are closed. You kiss her. It is soft. It is slow. It is real. It is not a lie. It is not a duty. It is not a role. It is you. It is her. It is life.

But the door is open. The light is still there. The cold is still there. The wind is still howling.

You hear it. It is a siren. It is far away. It is getting closer. It is the call. It is the order. It is the command.

You must go.

You look at the jacket on the floor. It lies there. It is empty. It is a shell. It is a grave.

"I cannot go without it," you say.

"Why?" she asks.

"Because if I leave it, I am free. And I am not free. I am bound. I am bound to them. I am bound to the truth. And the truth is that I am a monster."

She looks at you. She looks at the coat. She looks at you again.

"Then wear it," she says. "But leave your soul here."

You look at her. You do not understand. You cannot understand. You are a soldier. You are a man of action. You are a man of duty. You do not deal in souls. You deal in facts. You deal in laws. You deal in consequences.

You pick up the coat. You put it back on. You button it. The buttons click. The sound is louder now. It is louder than the wind. It is louder than the siren. It is louder than your heart.

"I have to go," you say.

"I know," she says.

You turn away. You walk to the door. You do not look back. You cannot look back. If you look back, you will see her face. You will see her pain. You will see her love. And you will break. And you will not be able to do what you must do.

You open the door. The cold hits you. It is like a blow. It is like a slap. It is like a curse.

You step out. The snow is falling. It is thick. It is white. It covers everything. It covers the ground. It covers the trees. It covers the world. It covers your sins.

You walk into the dark. You walk into the night. You walk into the storm.

You do not look back.

The jacket is heavy. It is warm. It is your skin. It is your shield. It is your prison.

You walk. You walk. You walk.

The siren is loud. It is close. It is here.

You are here.

You are alone.

You are free.

You are lost.

The snow keeps falling. It does not stop. It does not care. It buries you. It buries the road. It buries the past.

You are gone.

The house is silent.

The jacket is on the floor.

It is empty.

It is waiting.

The light from the window fades. The door closes. The latch clicks. It is a small sound. It is a final sound. It is the sound of a life ending.

Eleanor stands in the dark. She holds her breath. She watches the light. She watches the snow. She watches the world disappear.

She touches the floor. The wood is cold. The wood is hard. The wood is real.

She picks up the jacket. It is light in her hands. It is soft. It is warm.

She puts it on.

It fits.

It is yours.

It is hers.

It is nothing.

It is everything.

She stands in the center of the room. She is alone. She is strong. She is broken.

She looks at the door. She looks at the dark.

She waits.

She waits.

She waits.

The snow falls. The snow covers. The snow hides.

The truth is buried.

The lie is alive.

The man is gone.

The woman remains.

The jacket is warm.

The heart is cold.

The end.
