The Faded Sutra

You are standing in the rain, or perhaps you are standing in the static that has replaced the rain, a fine gray mist that tastes of copper and old pennies, and you are wearing your dress uniform, the one with the brass buttons that have tarnished into the color of dried blood, and you feel the weight of the epaulets on your shoulders as if they are living things, pressing down on your spine, reminding you that you are here, that you are the authority, that you are the man who was sent to put this place in order, and the place is not a place at all but a vast, shifting geometry of broken mirrors and suspended dust, a landscape that defies the laws of physics and the laws of reason, and you have been here for three days or three years, the distinction has become meaningless in the way that all distinctions become meaningless when the soul is stretched thin over the wire of the impossible, and you are looking at the tree, the single, impossible tree that stands in the center of this void, its branches made of twisted human fingers, its leaves small, perfect, human ears, twitching as if listening to a frequency just below the threshold of hearing, and you are supposed to be fighting it, you were told that it was the enemy, that it was the corruption, that it was the source of the madness that has swallowed the entire battalion, but you cannot bring yourself to fire, because you know, with a certainty that bypasses logic and settles deep in the marrow, that the tree is you, that the tree is your brother, that the tree is the part of you that you cut away when you joined the service, the part that felt too much, the part that bled, the part that wept, and now it has grown wild, it has grown vast, it has taken root in the soil of your abandonment, and it is beautiful, and it is terrifying, and you are the only one who can see it, or perhaps you are the only one who remembers it, and the others, the men in their gray uniforms, they are gone, they have become part of the mist, they have become part of the static, they are the dust that hangs in the air, waiting to be inhaled, waiting to be consumed, and you are alone with the tree, and you are alone with the truth, and the truth is that there is no enemy, there is no battle, there is only the self, fragmented and scattered and reassembled in a form that is grotesque and holy, and you raise your rifle, your hand trembling, the metal cold against your palm, and you look at the tree, and the tree looks at you, or rather, one of the leaves, one of the ears, turns toward you, and you hear a whisper, not a sound but a vibration in the bones of your skull, a whisper that says, you are the traitor, you are the one who left, you are the one who chose the uniform over the blood, you are the one who chose the order over the chaos, and you are the one who paid the price, and the price is this, the price is standing in the rain that is not rain, in the place that is not a place, guarding a tree that is your own flesh, and you lower the rifle, slowly, deliberately, the action a small rebellion against the doctrine, a small act of grace, and you step forward, into the mist, and you reach out, and you touch a branch, and the branch is warm, and it is wet, and it is alive, and you feel a pain, a sharp, jagged pain in your chest, the pain of recognition, the pain of reunion, and you understand, in that moment, that the boundary between good and evil is not a line but a blur, a smear of ink on a page that has been left in the rain, and that the monster is not the other, the monster is the part of the self that we deny, the part that we exile, the part that we lock in the basement of the soul, and that when we return to it, when we embrace it, when we allow it to grow, we do not become the monster, we become whole, we become human, we become the thing that we were meant to be, and you hold the branch, and the branch holds you, and the mist begins to clear, or perhaps you are clearing it, or perhaps you are simply accepting it, and the tree is still there, but it is no longer strange, it is no longer alien, it is familiar, it is home, and you are home, and you are free, and you are alone, and the freedom is a terrible thing, the aloneness is a beautiful thing, and you stand there, in the rain, in the static, in the silence, and you wait for the next order, or the next dream, or the next life, or the end, and it does not matter, because you have made your choice, you have made your peace, you have made your surrender, and the surrender is the victory, the peace is the war, and the victory is the loss, and you are the tree, and the tree is you, and you are both, and you are neither, and you are everything, and you are nothing, and you are the rain, and you are the static, and you are the breath that holds the two together, and you are the man in the uniform, and you are the brother in the blood, and you are the ghost in the machine, and you are the light in the dark, and you are the dark in the light, and you are the beginning, and you are the end, and you are the middle, the long, long middle where nothing happens and everything changes, and you stand there, and you wait, and you breathe, and you are alive, and you are dead, and you are the thing that walks between the two, the thing that belongs to neither, the thing that belongs to both, and you are the tree, and the tree is you, and you are the rain, and the rain is you, and you are the static, and the static is you, and you are the silence, and the silence is you, and you are the voice, and the voice is you, and you are the word, and the word is you, and you are the meaning, and the meaning is you, and you are the lie, and the lie is you, and you are the truth, and the truth is you, and you are the end, and the end is you, and you are the beginning, and the beginning is you, and you are the middle, and the middle is you, and you are the man, and the man is you, and you are the soldier, and the soldier is you, and you are the brother, and the brother is you, and you are the traitor, and the traitor is you, and you are the hero, and the hero is you, and you are the monster, and the monster is you, and you are the saint, and the saint is you, and you are the sinner, and the sinner is you, and you are the one, and the one is you, and you are the many, and the many is you, and you are the nothing, and the nothing is you, and you are the everything, and the everything is you, and you are the end, and the end is you.
