The Golden Master

The bell rang at dawn. It was a hollow sound. It cut through the mist. I stood by the gate. My brother stood with me. He held the spear. I held the shield. The shield was gold. Not just painted. Gold. Heavy. Warm. It fit my arm. It was part of me. I had held it for ten years. I had bled for it. I had died for it. I was still alive.

We waited for the order. The commander came. His face was stone. He looked at us. He looked at the shield. He looked at my brother. He did not look at my face. He spoke. His voice was dry. It was the voice of a man who has forgotten how to feel. He said, take the boy. Leave the metal.

My brother shook his head. His eyes were wet. He looked at me. He said, No. He said, It is yours. He said, We go together. Or we do not go.

The commander stepped forward. He drew his sword. The steel was cold. It reflected the gray sky. It reflected my fear. He pointed the tip at my brother’s chest. He said, One step. One step and you break the law. One step and you die.

My brother did not move. He looked at me. He smiled. It was a sad smile. It was the smile of a man who knows he is wrong. He knew I would leave. He knew I had to leave. He knew the shield was the only thing that mattered to the commander. He knew I loved the shield more than I loved him. He was right. I loved the shield. It was my skin. It was my name. Without it, I was nothing. I was just a man. A man is weak. A man is alone.

The commander waited. The mist thickened. It swallowed the road. It swallowed the fields. It swallowed the world. I felt the weight of the gold. It pulled at my shoulder. It pulled at my soul. It whispered to me. Stay. Keep. Hold. Be strong.

My brother stepped back. He let go of my hand. His fingers brushed mine. They were cold. They were so cold. He turned. He walked toward the commander. He walked into the fog. He did not look back. He never looked back again.

I stayed. I held the shield. I stood in the mist. I waited. The hours passed. The mist did not lift. The commander did not return. I was alone. I was with the gold. I was safe. I was strong. I was the golden master.

Days passed. Weeks passed. The mist cleared. The commander came back. He looked thinner. He looked tired. He looked at me. He nodded. He said, You did well. He said, The boy is gone. He said, Do not ask where.

I did not ask. I held the shield. I walked into the barracks. I put the shield on the wall. It hung there. It shone. It was perfect. It was beautiful. It was empty.

I slept. I dreamed of my brother. I dreamed of his cold hands. I dreamed of his smile. I woke up. I went to the wall. I touched the gold. It was cold. It was hard. It did not feel like me. It did not feel like love.

I told myself it was for duty. I told myself it was for the king. I told myself it was necessary. I told myself I was strong. I told myself I was right. But the words felt thin. They felt like paper. They tore when I looked at them.

I went to the commander’s office. The room was dark. The windows were closed. Dust floated in the air. The commander sat at his desk. He was writing. He did not look up. He said, Sit.

I sat. The chair was hard. The wood creaked. I said, Why? He stopped writing. He looked at me. His eyes were deep. They were dark. They held no light. He said, Because you are the only one who could hold it. He said, Your brother was weak. He said, He loved you too much. He said, Love is a flaw.

I wanted to shout. I wanted to throw the shield at him. I wanted to break the table. I wanted to tear my own skin off. But I did not move. I sat. I was still. I was the golden master. I was strong.

He said, The shield is a symbol. He said, It represents unity. He said, It represents power. He said, Without it, we are divided. He said, Your brother would have divided us. He said, You kept us whole.

I looked at my hands. They were trembling. I looked at the shield on the wall. I could not see it. It was behind me. But I felt it. It was a weight. It was a chain. It was a cage. I was the master. But I was also the prisoner.

I stood up. I walked out. I did not say goodbye. I did not say thank you. I walked to the gate. The mist was back. It was thicker than before. It was colder. I walked into it. I walked until the light was gone. I walked until the sound of my steps was gone. I walked until I was gone.

I found a cave. It was deep in the mountains. It was dark. It was silent. I sat in the corner. I held my knees. I held my head. I did not sleep. I did not eat. I waited. I waited for the pain to stop. It did not stop. It grew. It became a fire. It burned in my chest. It burned in my mind.

I thought of my brother. I thought of his face. I thought of his eyes. I saw the understanding in them. I saw the pity. He pitied me. He knew I had chosen the metal over the man. He knew I had chosen the symbol over the soul. He knew I was lost. I was lost. I was empty.

I reached for the shield. It was not there. I had left it on the wall. I had left it with the commander. I had left it with the dust. I had left it with the silence. I realized then. I had not kept the shield. I had lost it. I had lost myself.

I cried. The tears were hot. They fell on my hands. They fell on the stone. They did not stop. I cried until I was dry. I cried until I was hollow. I cried until I was nothing.

I stood up. I walked out of the cave. The mist was gone. The sun was out. The light was bright. It hurt my eyes. I squinted. I saw the road. I saw the town. I saw the barracks. I saw the gate.

I walked to the gate. The commander was there. He stood by the wall. The shield was gone. The wall was bare. The stone was gray. The dust was gone. The commander looked at me. He looked at the wall. He looked at me again. He said, It is gone.

I said, Who took it? He shrugged. He said, No one. He said, It melted. He said, The heat was too much. He said, It turned to dust. He said, It was never real.

I stared at him. I stared at the wall. I saw nothing. I saw only emptiness. I had held it. I had bled for it. I had killed for it. And it was gone. It had never been there. It was a lie. It was a dream. It was a ghost.

I laughed. The sound was strange. It was dry. It was broken. The commander stepped back. He looked afraid. He looked at me. He saw the madness in my eyes. He saw the pain. He saw the truth. He turned. He walked away. He did not look back.

I stood by the wall. I held my hands. They were empty. They were clean. They were mine. I looked at my brother’s shadow. It was on the ground. It was long. It was dark. It stretched across the stone. It reached toward me. It touched my feet.

I knelt down. I picked up a piece of stone. It was gray. It was rough. It was real. I held it in my hand. It was cold. It was hard. It was mine. I held it tight. I held it until my fingers hurt. I held it until I could feel the weight. I held it until I could feel the truth.

I stood up. I walked away. I did not look back. I walked into the town. I walked into the life. I was not the golden master. I was not the strong one. I was not the symbol. I was a man. I was alone. I was free.

The sun set. The sky turned red. It turned purple. It turned black. The stars came out. They were bright. They were cold. They were far. I looked up. I saw the stars. I saw my brother. I saw him smiling. He was not there. He was everywhere. He was in the air. He was in the light. He was in me.

I closed my eyes. I breathed in. I breathed out. I felt the air. I felt the cold. I felt the silence. I was alive. I was here. I was real.

The story ends. The pain remains. But it is quiet. It is still. It is mine. I carry it. I carry the stone. I carry the memory. I carry the love. I carry the loss. I carry the truth. I walk on. I walk on. I walk on.

The road is long. The night is dark. The stars are bright. I am alone. I am not alone. I am with him. I am with the truth. I am with the life. I am with the breath. I am with the now.

I am free.
