The Distant Nightmare

The rain falls. It is cold and relentless. You walk. Your boots sink into the mud of the valley. The mist clings to your shoulders like a shroud. You are tired. Your bones ache with a deep, hollow pain. You are old. Time has eaten you from the inside out. You carry a sword. It is heavy. It is old. The leather grip is worn smooth by generations of hands. You do not know whose hands. You do not know if they were kind or cruel. You only know that it is yours now.

You walk toward the keep. It stands on the hill. Black stone. Silent. The windows are dark. There is no light. There is no smoke from the chimneys. The village is dead. Or sleeping. You do not care. You only care about the path. The path is straight. The path is narrow. The path is yours.

Your name is Elias. You are a knight. You served the Lord. You served the King. You served the law. Now the law is dust. The King is dust. The Lord is dust. Only you remain. Only the sword remains. And the memory of your brother. Thomas. He was young. He was bright. He was like the sun. He is gone. He is in the ground. The ground is cold. You feel his absence in your chest. It is a stone. It sits there. It weighs you down. You carry it with you. You carry it always.

The wind howls. It sounds like a warning. It sounds like a lie. You keep walking. Your legs are weak. Your knees buckle. You stop. You lean on the sword. You look at your hands. They are wrinkled. They are spotted. They are hands that have held a hilt. They are hands that have killed. You do not remember the faces. You only remember the blood. It was red. It was warm. It was quick. You feel a sudden lightness. A giddiness. You laugh. The sound is strange. It is dry. It is like cracking wood. You are not supposed to laugh. You are supposed to be solemn. You are supposed to be tragic. But you are light. You are free. The weight is gone. The stone is gone. Thomas is gone. You are alone. And you are happy.

The keep appears. It is closer now. The stones are wet. They glisten. You climb the steps. The gate is open. It stands ajar. Like a mouth. Like a jaw. You step inside. The air is stale. It smells of rot. It smells of iron. You walk through the courtyard. There are no guards. There are no enemies. There is only the silence. It is thick. It is heavy. It presses against your skin. You feel watched. You look up. The sky is gray. The clouds are low. They seem to touch the battlements.

You enter the hall. The floor is cracked. The torches are out. You light one. The flame flickers. It dances. It is beautiful. You walk deeper. The shadows stretch. They reach for you. They grasp at your ankles. You do not stop. You walk to the throne room. It is at the top of the stairs. The stairs are steep. They are worn. You climb them. Your breath is shallow. Your heart beats fast. It is a drum. It is a warning. You reach the door. It is wood. It is dark. You push it open.

The room is empty. The throne is there. It is gold. It is black. It is empty. You sit on it. The cushion is cold. It is hard. You feel the power. It flows through you. It is cold. It is sharp. It cuts you. You do not flinch. You lean back. You look at the doors. They are closed. You are trapped. You are safe. You are alone. You close your eyes. You see Thomas. He is smiling. He is waving. He is gone. You open your eyes. You are alone.

A sound. It is faint. It is a knock. It is on the door. You do not move. You do not breathe. The knock comes again. It is louder. It is urgent. You stand up. Your legs shake. You walk to the door. Your hand is on the hilt. You pull the sword. It is heavy. It is dull. You open the door.

A boy stands there. He is small. He is thin. He is dirty. He has no armor. He has no weapon. He looks at you. His eyes are wide. His eyes are black. They are deep. They are old. They are like pits. They are like wells. You look into them. You see yourself. You see your youth. You see your strength. You see your fear. You see your death. You look away. You look at the floor. You look at the boy’s feet. They are bare. They are cold. They are muddy.

“Who are you?” you ask. Your voice is rough. It is deep. It is strange. You do not recognize it.

“I am here,” the boy says. His voice is soft. It is clear. It is like water. It is like ice. “I am here for you.”

“For me?” you ask. “What do you want?”

“I want nothing,” the boy says. “I want to stay.”

You look at him. You look at his hands. They are small. They are pale. They are trembling. You look at his face. It is round. It is soft. It is innocent. It is not innocent. It is empty. It is a mirror. You see your own face in his. You see the hunger. You see the need. You see the void.

“You cannot stay,” you say. “This is my place. This is my throne. I am the King. I am the Law. I am the End.”

The boy smiles. It is a small smile. It is a sad smile. It is a knowing smile. “You are tired, old man,” he says. “You are done. You are finished. You are ready to go.”

“No,” you say. “I am not ready. I am not done. I have not won. I have not lost. I am still here. I am still fighting. I am still holding on.”

“You are holding on to nothing,” the boy says. “You are holding on to a ghost. You are holding on to a lie. You are holding on to your brother. He is dead. You are alive. But you are not living. You are just existing. You are just breathing. You are just waiting. And waiting is a kind of death. A slow death. A quiet death. A cold death.”

You look at the sword. You look at the boy. You look at the throne. The throne is empty. The throne is full. The throne is you. The throne is him. The throne is the space between you. The space is growing. The space is closing. You feel the pull. It is strong. It is sweet. It is like sleep. It is like death.

“You are right,” you say. Your voice is quiet. It is soft. It is like a whisper. It is like a sigh. “I am tired. I am done. I am finished. I am ready to go.”

The boy steps inside. He walks past you. He walks to the throne. He sits down. He does not look at you. He looks at the door. He waits. You stand there. You hold the sword. The sword is heavy. The sword is light. The sword is gone. You drop it. It hits the floor. The sound is sharp. The sound is final. The sound is the end.

You turn around. You walk back. You walk down the stairs. The stairs are steep. The stairs are easy. You walk out of the hall. You walk out of the keep. The rain is still falling. The mist is still clinging. The valley is still dark. You walk. Your boots sink into the mud. Your bones ache. Your chest is empty. The stone is gone. The weight is gone. The giddiness is gone. You are calm. You are still. You are free.

You walk until the sun rises. The light is pale. The light is weak. The light is new. You see the trees. They are bare. They are black. They are alive. You see the grass. It is green. It is wet. It is soft. You sit down. You rest. You close your eyes. You see Thomas. He is not smiling. He is not waving. He is looking at you. He is waiting. He is patient. He is kind. He is gone.

You open your eyes. The sun is higher. The light is stronger. The light is warm. You stand up. You walk on. You do not know where you are going. You do not know who you are. You do not know what you want. You only know that you are walking. You only know that you are alive. You only know that you are free.

The road is long. The road is straight. The road is yours. You walk. The rain stops. The mist lifts. The sky is clear. The sky is blue. The sky is vast. The sky is empty. The sky is full. You look up. You see the stars. They are out. They are bright. They are old. They are young. They are waiting. You look away. You look at the path. The path is clear. The path is open. The path is gone. You step off the path. You step into the field. The grass is soft. The grass is warm. The grass is dead. The grass is alive. You lie down. You close your eyes. You breathe in. You breathe out. You let go. You let go of the sword. You let go of the throne. You let go of the past. You let go of the fear. You let go of the pain. You let go of the love. You let go of Thomas. You let go of yourself.

You are gone. You are here. You are nothing. You are everything. You are the rain. You are the mud. You are the stone. You are the wind. You are the silence. You are the sound. You are the light. You are the dark. You are the life. You are the death. You are the end. You are the beginning. You are the dream. You are the nightmare. You are the truth. You are the lie. You are the man. You are the boy. You are the ghost. You are the flesh. You are the bone. You are the blood. You are the breath. You are the heart. You are the soul. You are the void. You are the fullness. You are the end. You are the start. You are here. You are gone. You are free.

The grass grows over you. The flowers bloom around you. The birds sing above you. The wind sings through the leaves. The sun shines on your face. The rain falls on your body. The earth takes you in. The earth holds you close. The earth keeps you safe. The earth loves you. The earth forgives you. The earth releases you. You are part of the earth. You are part of the world. You are part of the whole. You are part of the nothing. You are part of the everything. You are part of the silence. You are part of the song. You are part of the life. You are part of the death. You are part of the dream. You are part of the nightmare. You are part of the truth. You are part of the lie. You are part of the man. You are part of the boy. You are part of the ghost. You are part of the flesh. You are part of the bone. You are part of the blood. You are part of the breath. You are part of the heart. You are part of the soul. You are part of the void. You are part of the fullness. You are part of the end. You are part of the start. You are here. You are gone. You are free.

The story ends. The words end. The sound ends. The silence begins. The silence lasts. The silence is you. The silence is me. The silence is us. The silence is now. The silence is always. The silence is never. The silence is everything. The silence is nothing. The silence is here. The silence is gone. The silence is free.
