The Wistful Dinner

The fog sits heavy on the valley floor. It smells of wet stone and old blood. You are here. You are not home. The house is cold. The walls breathe.

You remember the map. You drew it years ago. The ink is faded. The lines are wrong. You are an exile. You crossed the sea. You left the village. You left the well.

Now you return. The town is small. The streets are narrow. The people watch you. Their eyes are flat. They see a stranger. They do not see you.

Your brother is waiting. Thomas. He is old. His hair is white. He stands by the door. He does not smile. His face is a mask. He holds a lantern. The light is dim. The flame flickers.

"Come in," he says. His voice is dry. Like leaves.

You step inside. The floorboards creak. The air is thick. Dust hangs in the beam of light. There is a table in the center. It is set for two. The plates are white. The cups are chipped.

Thomas pours wine. The liquid is dark. It smells of iron. He pushes a cup toward you. Your hand trembles. You take it.

"You look thin," he says.

"I have been away," you say.

"I know."

He sits. He does not eat. He watches you. His gaze is sharp. It cuts through the fog. It cuts through the years.

The food is cold. Bread. Cheese. Salt. You chew. It tastes of ash. You swallow. It burns.

Thomas speaks again. His words are slow. They weigh on the air.

"The well is dry," he says. "The water has changed. It is black. It moves against the current. The fish float up. They have no eyes."

You nod. You know this. You heard the stories. You thought them lies. You thought they were fears. Fear makes monsters. Fear makes monsters of water.

"I came to fix it," you say.

Thomas laughs. It is a dry sound. Like a crack in wood.

"Fix it?" he asks. "You cannot fix the deep. You cannot fix the time. Time is the monster. It eats the young. It leaves the old. You are old now, brother. You are not the boy who dove."

You feel a sting. You look at your hands. They are spotted. They are rough. The skin is paper-thin. You are old. You are defeated. You accept it. The defeat is cold. It settles in your bones.

"Tell me," you say. "What happened?"

Thomas leans forward. The lantern light catches his face. Shadows dance in his eyes.

"We tried to keep it," he says. "The water. The source. We built the walls. We sealed the door. We thought we could hold it back. We thought we were good. We thought we were safe. We were wrong."

"What is it?" you ask.

"It is not a thing," he says. "It is a hunger. It lives in the roots. It drinks the years. It takes the strength. It takes the mind. It leaves the body. It leaves the soul. It is the end of things. It is the quiet death."

You think of the village. The children playing. The laughter. It is gone. The silence is loud. It screams.

"I wanted to save you," you say.

"You wanted to save yourself," Thomas says. His voice is soft. It is cruel. "You ran. You crossed the sea. You left me here. You left us here. You chose safety. You chose life. You chose to live. I chose to stay. I chose to watch."

The words hit you. They are hard. They are true. You did not run out of fear. You ran out of love. You loved your life. You loved your breath. You loved the sun on the other side of the sea. You left him in the dark.

The shame is hot. It rises in your throat. It burns. You want to speak. You want to beg. You cannot.

Thomas stands. He walks to the window. The fog presses against the glass. It looks like a face. It looks like a hand.

"Look," he says.

You walk to the window. You look out. The street is empty. The lamps are off. The dark is total.

But then. You see it.

A shape. In the fog. It is tall. It is thin. It has no face. It has no eyes. It is made of mist. It is made of memory.

It moves toward the house. It does not walk. It flows. It is water. It is time. It is the thing that eats.

"It is here," Thomas says. "It has been here for years. It waits. It waits for the last one. It waits for the one who left. It wants you."

You turn. You look at Thomas. He is calm. He is at peace. He is not afraid.

"Why?" you ask.

"Because you are the anchor," he says. "You are the link. You are the bridge. Without you, the cycle breaks. With you, it continues. It needs you to come back. It needs you to join. It needs you to become part of the deep."

You look at the shape. It is closer. It is at the door. The wood groans. The handle turns.

Thomas picks up the knife. It is small. It is rusty. He holds it out to you.

"Take it," he says.

You do not take it. You cannot. Your hands are empty. Your hands are open.

Thomas sighs. He puts the knife down. He walks to the door. He opens it.

The fog pours in. It is cold. It is wet. It smells of rot.

The shape enters. It does not speak. It does not scream. It simply is. It wraps around Thomas. It touches him.

Thomas does not resist. He closes his eyes. He smiles. It is a sad smile. It is a final smile.

"Go," he whispers. "Go now. While you can. While you are still you."

The fog takes him. It swallows him. It is gone. The room is empty. The chair is empty. The cup is empty.

You are alone.

The shape turns to you. It has no face. But you feel its gaze. It is heavy. It is cold. It is hungry.

You run.

You run out the door. You run into the fog. The air is thick. It clings to your skin. It chills your blood.

You run through the streets. The houses are empty. The doors are open. The dark waits inside.

You run to the edge of the town. You run to the road. You run to the hill.

You stop. You are out of breath. Your chest heaves. Your legs shake.

You look back.

The town is gone.

There is only fog. There is only white. There is only silence.

The hill is gone. The road is gone. The earth is gone.

You stand on nothing.

The fog rises. It surrounds you. It touches your face. It enters your mouth. It enters your nose.

You taste it. It tastes of iron. It tastes of time. It tastes of Thomas.

You do not fight. You do not run. You stand. You breathe.

You are old. You are defeated. You are here.

The fog wraps around you. It is warm now. It is soft. It is like a blanket. It is like a hug.

You close your eyes.

You remember the well. You remember the water. You remember the taste.

You open your eyes.

You are in the water.

You are in the deep.

You are part of it.

The hunger is satisfied.

The cycle is complete.

You are the anchor.

You are the bridge.

You are the end.

The fog settles. The valley is quiet. The town is still. The people are gone.

Only the mist remains.

Only the silence.

Only you.

You are alone.

You are home.

The water is black.

The water is clear.

The water is you.
