The Faded Masquerade
You are standing in the hall now. The air is thick. It smells of damp wool and old wax. The chandelier above is a jagged thing. Glass shards hang from it like frozen tears. They do not shine. They catch the light and break it. The floor is marble. It is cold under your boots. You can feel the chill rising. It goes up your shins. It settles in your bones.
Do not look up yet. Look at your hands. They are trembling. Why are they trembling? You know why. You have always known why. But you are pretending. You are pretending this is just a party. Just a gathering of the powerful. The men in their dark coats. The women in their silks. They are laughing. The sound is distant. It sounds like water running over stones.
Who is that man? The one in the corner. The one with the grey hair. He is watching you. His eyes are flat. They are empty. Do you recognize him? No. You cannot recognize him. He is a stranger. He is a ghost. But he looks at you with such weight. It presses on your chest. You feel it there. A heavy stone. You want to speak. You want to say something. But your throat is tight. You swallow. It is dry.
The music stops. It was a waltz. It was slow and sad. Now there is silence. The silence is worse. It has teeth. It bites. The man in the corner moves. He steps forward. His shoes make no sound. He is close now. You can see the lines on his face. They are deep. They are carved by wind. By time. By regret.
"Is it you?" he asks. His voice is low. It is rough. It scrapes against the quiet.
You shake your head. No. It is not you. You are no one. You are a shadow. You are a mistake. "Who are you?" you ask. Your voice is small. It is barely a whisper. It dies in the air.
"I am the one who remembers," he says. He looks at the chandelier. He looks at the broken glass. "I remember when it was whole."
You look up now. You look at the chandelier. The shards are everywhere. They are like stars. Fallen stars. They are beautiful in their brokenness. You feel a pull. A strange pull. It is not fear. It is recognition. You know this place. You know this pain. It is your pain. It is your house. It is your life.
How did it break? You ask yourself. You try to remember. The memory is slippery. It slides away. You reach for it. Your fingers close on air. You were young. You were bright. You had a song in your voice. Now your voice is gone. Now you are old. You are tired. The years have eaten you. They have eaten your hope. They have eaten your name.
The man steps closer. He is very close. You can smell him. He smells of rain. Of earth. Of decay. "You left," he says. "You left us."
"I had to," you say. "I had no choice. The sickness... it came. It took everything."
"The sickness," he repeats. He nods. He understands. He does not argue. He does not blame. He only watches. He watches the shards on the floor. He watches the dust motes dancing in the light. "We thought you were gone forever. We thought you died."
"I am here," you say. "I am still here."
"Are you?" he asks. "Or are you just a memory? A ghost in the hall?"
You do not answer. You cannot answer. You are both. You are the ghost. You are the living. You are the broken thing. You are the whole thing. The line is blurred. The line is gone.
The doors open. Men enter. They are large. They are strong. They wear badges. They carry guns. They do not look at you. They look at the man in the corner. They look at the chandelier. They look for evidence. They look for crime.
"Move," one of them says. His voice is hard. It is a command. It is a wall.
The man in the corner does not move. He stands still. He stands firm. He looks at you. "Go," he says. "Go now. Before they see you. Before they break you too."
"I cannot leave," you say. "I have to stay. I have to see."
"They will not let you see," he says. "They will take you. They will lock you away. They will hide you. That is what they do. They hide the truth. They hide the pain."
You look at the men. You look at their badges. The badges are shiny. They are new. They are clean. They represent order. They represent law. They represent justice. But they are lies. They are masks. Under the masks are the same empty eyes. The same cold hearts.
"Let us pass," the lead man says. He points to the man in the corner. "You. Step aside."
The man in the corner does not move. He does not step aside. He stands like a tree. He stands like a stone. He does not fight. He does not run. He only stands. He is immovable. The men frown. They do not like this. They do not like resistance. They do not like stillness.
"Move," the lead man says again. He draws his gun. The gun is black. It is long. It is deadly. He points it at the man’s chest.
You see the fear in the man’s eyes. But you also see something else. You see peace. He is not afraid. He is at rest. He has accepted his fate. He has accepted the end. He is ready.
You want to scream. You want to run. You want to stop it. But your legs are heavy. Your feet are glued to the floor. You are frozen. You are part of the scene. You are part of the statue.
The man in the corner looks at you one last time. He smiles. It is a small smile. It is a sad smile. It is a smile of farewell. "Forgive me," he says. "For staying. For not leaving. For being here."
"I forgive you," you say. The words come out. They are true. They are real. You forgive him. You forgive yourself. You forgive the world.
The gun fires. The sound is loud. It is sharp. It tears the air. It shatters the silence. The man falls. He falls slowly. He falls like snow. He lands on the marble. He lands on the broken glass.
The glass cuts him. The blood mixes with the shards. It is red. It is dark. It is beautiful. It is terrible.
You are shaking. You are crying. The tears are hot. They run down your face. They drip onto your hands. You wipe them away. It is no use. They keep coming.
The men rush forward. They grab the body. They lift it. They carry it out. They carry it to the light. They carry it to the cars. They carry it to the darkness.
The hall is empty again. The men are gone. The silence returns. It is heavy. It is thick. It presses on you. It weighs you down.
You are alone. You are truly alone. The man is gone. The glass is broken. The chandelier is dead.
You walk to the center of the hall. You stand there. You look up. You look at the chandelier. You look at the shards. You pick up one. It is small. It is sharp. It is cold. You hold it in your hand. You feel the edge. You feel the cut. You feel the pain.
You do not drop it. You do not throw it. You hold it. You keep it. You put it in your pocket. You tuck it away. It is yours now. It is part of you.
You walk to the door. The door is open. The night is outside. The night is dark. The night is cold. You step out. You step into the night.
You do not look back. You do not need to look back. You know what is behind you. You know what you have left. You know what you have lost.
You walk down the street. The street is long. The street is empty. The street is quiet. Your footsteps echo. They are the only sound. They are the only life.
You walk for a long time. You do not know where you are going. You do not need to know. You are just walking. You are just moving. You are just existing.
The wind blows. It is cold. It cuts your face. It chills your skin. You wrap your coat tighter. You pull your collar up. You hide your face. You hide your pain.
You think about the man. You think about his smile. You think about his words. Forgive me. For being here.
You understand now. He was not a ghost. He was not a memory. He was a man. He was a friend. He was a lover. He was a part of you. And he is gone.
The justice is done. The law is upheld. The order is restored. But the heart is broken. The soul is shattered. The truth is hidden.
You are free. You are free to walk. You are free to live. You are free to be alone.
You walk into the fog. The fog swallows you. It takes you. It erases you. You are no one. You are nothing. You are gone.
But you are here. You are still here.
You hold the shard. You feel its edge. You feel its cold. You keep it. You keep the pain. You keep the memory. You keep the truth.
You walk on. You walk into the dark. You walk into the night. You walk into the unknown.
You are alone. You are free. You are broken.
You are whole.
The night is endless. The night is deep. The night is yours.
You walk.
