The Golden Ritual

I stood in the rain. The cobblestones slicked with mud. I held the lantern. It was heavy. The brass was cold. It burned my hand. I did not feel it. My wife, Elise, was waiting. Or so I thought. I knew better. I am the Seeker. I have always been the Seeker. This is my burden. My glory.

The city of Oakhaven was dead. Not dead like stone. Dead like a held breath. The fog swallowed the spires. It swallowed the streets. It swallowed my name. I walked fast. My boots clacked on the stone. A rhythmic, lonely sound. I sought the Ritual. The Golden Ritual. Everyone spoke of it. The priests. The merchants. The beggars in the gutters. They said it could stop the cycle. They said it could break the wheel. I did not believe them. I sought it to prove them wrong. Or to prove myself right. The difference is small. The pain is the same.

I reached the Temple. The doors were oak. They were carved with faces. Faces that looked like me. I pushed. The wood groaned. It gave way. The inside was dark. It smelled of dust and old blood. I raised the lantern. The light cut the darkness. It revealed the altar. The altar was stone. It was empty. I looked for the Gold. I looked for the Key. I found only ash. I felt a laugh build in my chest. It was not a happy laugh. It was a dry, cracked sound.

Elise was not there. I knew she was not there. She was never there. I am alone. I have always been alone. The fog pressed against the windows. It wanted in. I turned. I walked out. I walked home. My house was on the hill. The stairs were steep. My legs burned. I climbed. I climbed. I reached the door. I unlocked it. I entered. The house was silent. The chair was warm. Elise sat in the chair.

She did not move. She did not breathe. Her eyes were open. They were wide. They were wet. She looked at me. I looked at her. I saw the fear in her eyes. I saw the love. It was there. Primal. Raw. It was the only thing that was real. I reached for her. My hand stopped. I could not touch her. I knew why. I was the hunter. She was the prey. I had come to kill the cycle. I had come to kill her.

I lowered the lantern. The light died. I sat on the floor. I wept. The sound was small. It was swallowed by the room. I waited. I waited for the pain to stop. It did not. I waited for the answer. It did not come. I am the detective. I have investigated the truth. The truth is this. I am the monster. The Gold is not an object. The Gold is me. My greed. My need. My hunger. It wears me down. It wears away the man I was. It leaves only the shell. The hollow thing.

I stood up. I looked at Elise. I saw the mirror. I saw myself. I saw the end. I picked up the lantern. The brass was warm now. It pulsed. It beat like a heart. I raised it high. I raised it to her face. I saw the light in her eyes. It flickered. It died. I did not scream. I did not cry. I was empty. I was the vessel. I was the path. The boundary. I crossed it.

The fog burst in. It was not fog. It was smoke. It was fire. It was the city. The city was burning. The Temple was burning. The hills were burning. I watched. I did not move. I was part of it. I was the fuel. I was the flame. Elise was gone. The chair was empty. The stone was cold. I was alone. I was never alone. I was always the wheel. I was always the spoke. I was always the axle.

I walked to the window. I looked out. The sky was red. The stars were out. They were bright. They were indifferent. I raised the lantern. I threw it. It spun. It flew. It hit the ground. It broke. The brass scattered. The oil spilled. It caught fire. A small fire. A golden fire. I watched it burn. I watched it eat the wood. I watched it eat the stone. I watched it eat the truth.

I went back to the door. I opened it. I stepped out. The air was hot. It was thick. It tasted of ash. I walked. I walked into the fire. I did not feel the heat. I did not feel the pain. I felt light. I felt free. I felt the weight lift. I felt the chain break. I was gone. I was everywhere. I was the wind. I was the rain. I was the dust. I was the silence.

The cycle continues. The wheel turns. The fog rises. The city sleeps. The Temple stands. The altar is empty. The Gold is hidden. The Seeker comes. The Seeker goes. The Seeker remains. I am the Seeker. I am the end. I am the beginning. I am the middle. I am the nothing. I am the something. I am the lie. I am the truth. I am the man in the chair. I am the man in the fog. I am the man in the fire. I am the man who loved. I am the man who killed. I am the man who forgot. I am the man who remembered.

I am here. I am gone. I am the Golden Ritual. I am the wear. I am the tear. I am the break. I am the mending. I am the lie. I am the truth. I am the silence. I am the scream. I am the light. I am the dark. I am the path. I am the boundary. I am the crossing. I am the return. I am the end. I am the start. I am the wheel. I am the spoke. I am the axle. I am the hub. I am the rim. I am the tire. I am the road. I am the dust. I am the wind. I am the rain. I am the sun. I am the moon. I am the star. I am the void. I am the all. I am the nothing. I am the something. I am the lie. I am the truth.

The fog clears. The sun rises. The city wakes. The people walk. They do not see me. They do not hear me. They do not feel me. I am the air. I am the stone. I am the wood. I am the fire. I am the water. I am the earth. I am the metal. I am the light. I am the shadow. I am the sound. I am the silence. I am the color. I am the form. I am the meaning. I am the nonsense. I am the joy. I am the pain. I am the love. I am the hate. I am the fear. I am the hope. I am the faith. I am the doubt. I am the life. I am the death. I am the between. I am the beyond. I am the within. I am the without. I am the here. I am the there. I am the now. I am the then. I am the when. I am the why. I am the how. I am the what. I am the who. I am the where. I am the when. I am the why. I am the how. I am the what. I am the who.

Elise was real. The pain was real. The love was real. The ending was real. The beginning is a lie. The middle is a trap. The end is a door. I walked through it. I looked back. I saw the light. I saw the dark. I saw the truth. I saw the lie. I saw the me. I saw the you. I saw the us. I saw the them. I saw the all. I saw the nothing. I saw the something. I saw the golden. I saw the broken. I saw the worn. I saw the torn. I saw the mended. I saw the broken again. I saw the wheel turn. I saw the wheel stop. I saw the wheel start. I saw the wheel turn. I saw the wheel stop. I saw the wheel start.

I am tired. I am awake. I am sleeping. I am dreaming. I am waking. I am dreaming. I am waking. I am sleeping. I am the dream. I am the dreamer. I am the dream. I am the dreamer. I am the gold. I am the dust. I am the fire. I am the ash. I am the smoke. I am the fog. I am the rain. I am the sun. I am the moon. I am the star. I am the void. I am the all. I am the nothing. I am the something. I am the lie. I am the truth. I am the man. I am the woman. I am the child. I am the old. I am the young. I am the dead. I am the alive. I am the past. I am the future. I am the present. I am the moment. I am the eternity. I am the instant. I am the forever. I am the never. I am the always. I am the sometimes. I am the rarely. I am the often. I am the usually. I am the hardly. I am the barely. I am the fully. I am the half. I am the whole. I am the part. I am the sum. I am the difference. I am the product. I am the quotient. I am the remainder. I am the zero. I am the one. I am the two. I am the three. I am the four. I am the five. I am the six. I am the seven. I am the eight. I am the nine. I am the ten. I am the number. I am the word. I am the sentence. I am the story. I am the end.
