The Distant Summer

The bell rings. Not a church bell. Not a school bell. It is a hollow, metallic scream that tears through the silence of the bunker. You are standing. You have always been standing in this room. The air is thick with dust and the metallic taste of old blood. Your uniform is torn. The fabric, once a crisp blue, is now a ragged thing, stained with mud and something darker. It clings to your skin like a second, dying layer.

You look at your hands. They are shaking. The gloves are gone. You lost them hours ago, or maybe years ago. Time has stopped moving in this place. It is only the present. It is only the impact.

Thomas is behind you. He does not speak. He does not need to. You know what he is thinking because you are thinking it too. You are one mind. You are one body. The boundary between your self and his has eroded away. He is your anchor. He is the reason you do not fall. His hand rests on your shoulder. His weight is real. His heat is real.

The door opens.

Light floods in. It is too bright. It is blinding. It burns your retinas. You squint. You cannot see. But you can feel the shape of the figures entering. There are three of them. They wear grey. They carry weapons. They carry authority.

One of them steps forward. He is tall. He has a face like a stone wall. Cold. Hard. Unyielding. He looks at you. He looks at Thomas. He does not see you. He sees uniforms. He sees threats. He sees a violation of order.

"Step away," he says. His voice is flat. It is the voice of the system. It is the voice of the law.

You do not move. Thomas does not move.

"Step away from the prisoner," the man says. His hand moves to his belt. You see the glint of steel.

Thomas pushes you. Hard. You stumble. Your back hits the concrete wall. It is cold. It is hard. It hurts.

"You stay," Thomas says. His voice is low. It is a command. It is a prayer.

"I stay?" you whisper.

"You live," he says.

The man raises his weapon. The barrel is black. It is an eye. It looks at you. It looks at Thomas. It does not discriminate. To the system, you are the same. You are both targets. You are both errors in the code.

Thomas moves.

It is not a plan. It is not a tactic. It is an instinct. It is the primal, animal need to protect the one you love. He throws himself at the man. He throws himself at the gun. He throws himself at the light.

There is a sound. It is loud. It is final. It is a crack that splits the air.

Then silence.

You are on the floor. The concrete is rough against your cheek. You can taste the grit. You can taste the iron. You try to stand. Your legs will not work. They are numb. They are gone.

You look up.

The man is on the ground. He is not moving.

Thomas is standing. He is bleeding. Blood runs from his head. It runs down his face. It soaks into his shirt. It pools on the floor. It is dark. It is thick.

He looks at you. His eyes are wide. They are clear. They are full of a terrible, bright light.

"It is done," he says.

You try to speak. Your voice is a rasp. "No."

"It is done," he says again.

He falls.

It is slow. It is like a leaf falling in autumn. It is gentle. It is final. He hits the ground. He does not make a sound.

You crawl toward him. Your fingers scrape against the concrete. The pain is sharp. It is real. You reach him. You touch his face. His skin is warm. It is getting cold.

"Thomas," you whisper.

His eyes close.

You look at your uniform. The blue fabric is torn. It is ripped. It is in pieces. It is no longer a symbol of duty. It is no longer a shield. It is a rags. It is a corpse.

The other two men are standing. They are looking at you. They are looking at Thomas. They are calculating. They are judging.

One of them raises his weapon.

You do not run. You do not fight. You sit back on your heels. You look at the man. You look at the gun. You look at the broken uniform on your body.

You realize it then.

The system does not care about justice. The system cares about order. You were breaking the order. Thomas was breaking the order. You were both guilty. You were both wrong. The law does not distinguish between the criminal and the protector. The law only distinguishes between the alive and the dead.

The man fires.

The bullet hits the wall behind you. It does not hit you. It does not matter. It is a message. It is a warning. It is a declaration.

You look at Thomas. His blood is spreading. It is forming a circle around you. It is a halo. It is a cage.

You stand up. Your legs are weak. You are swaying. You are holding onto the air.

You walk toward the door.

The men do not stop you. They do not need to. You are broken. You are defeated. You are part of the debris.

You step into the light.

It is still bright. It is still blinding. But you can see now.

The world is outside. The air is cold. It is clean. It smells of rain and dirt.

You look down at your uniform. It is in tatters. The fabric is shredded. It is hanging off your shoulders. It is useless. It is a lie.

You take it off.

It takes effort. Your hands are clumsy. Your arms are heavy. You pull the fabric from your body. It tears. It rips. It makes a sound like a sob.

You hold the uniform in your hands. It is blue. It is dark. It is dead.

You drop it.

It falls to the wet ground. It spreads out. It looks like a shadow. It looks like a grave.

You stand there. Naked. Exposed. Vulnerable.

The wind blows. It chills your skin. It wakes you up.

You are alone.

Thomas is gone.

The system is gone.

You are here.

You look at your hands. They are still. They are clean. They are yours.

You take a step. Then another.

You do not look back.

You do not need to.

The uniform lies in the mud. It is fading. It is dissolving. It is becoming part of the earth.

You walk into the rain.

The drops hit your face. They are cold. They are sharp. They are real.

You close your eyes.

You feel the water. You feel the cold. You feel the life.

It is enough.

It is all you have.

It is all you need.

You keep walking.

The road is long. The road is dark. The road is yours.

You do not know where it leads.

You do not care.

You are free.

You are broken.

You are alive.

The rain continues. It washes the world. It washes the past. It washes the guilt.

You are clean.

You are new.

You are nothing.

You are everything.

The uniform is gone.

The name is gone.

The duty is gone.

Only the body remains.

Only the breath remains.

Only the truth remains.

You are human.

You are flawed.

You are free.

The night is deep. The stars are out. They are distant. They are cold. They are watching.

You do not look up.

You look forward.

You walk.

The pain is gone.

The fear is gone.

The rage is gone.

Only the silence remains.

It is a heavy silence.

It is a deep silence.

It is a silent peace.

You are home.

You are lost.

You are found.

The story is over.

The life is just beginning.

You take a breath.

You take a step.

You are alive.
