The Faded Chronicle

The watch on my wrist ticks. It is a small, silver thing. It marks time. It marks duty. It marks the end.

I am a Warden of the Aether. We do not guard walls. We guard the silence. The silence that exists between the stars. The silence that holds the world together. If the silence breaks, the world shatters. So we listen. We stand in the dark halls of the Spire. We wait for the whisper.

My name is Elias. I have worn the grey coat for ten years. The coat is thin. It is old. It smells of dust and ozone. It is my skin. It is my shield. It is my cage.

My friend is Silas. He is younger. He is bright. His eyes are like chips of ice. He believes in the Spire. He believes in the silence. He believes that we are the ones who keep the dark at bay. I do not believe. I only endure.

We stand in the Observation Deck. The glass is cold. Outside, the void stares back. It is empty. It is full. It is both.

"Do you hear it?" Silas asks.

His voice is low. It is soft. It vibrates in the air.

"I hear nothing," I say.

"That is the point," he says. "Nothing is the sound of safety."

I look at him. I look at his face. It is calm. It is too calm. I see something in his eyes. A flicker. A shadow. I do not understand it. I do not want to understand it.

The Spire is ancient. It was built before the kings. It was built before the gods. It is a machine. It is a temple. It is a prison. We are the keepers. We are the prisoners.

Every day is the same. We check the dials. We clean the glass. We eat the grey food. We sleep in the cold rooms. We do not speak of the outside. There is no outside. There is only the Spire. There is only the duty.

One night, the power fails.

The lights go out. The hum stops. The silence becomes real. It becomes heavy. It presses against my ears. It presses against my chest.

Silas is with me. He is in the dark. I can feel him. I can smell him. He smells of fear. I smell of duty.

"What is happening?" he whispers.

"I do not know," I say.

We wait. We wait for the backup generators. We wait for the light. We wait for the end.

Then, a sound.

It is not a whisper. It is a scream. It is high. It is sharp. It cuts through the dark. It comes from the lower levels. It comes from the core.

Silas moves. He moves fast. He grabs my arm. His grip is tight. His fingers are cold.

"We must go," he says.

"No," I say. "Protocol. We stay. We wait."

"Protocol is dead," he says. "The core is breaking."

I look at him. I do not trust him. But I move. I follow him. We take the stairs. The stairs are long. The stairs are dark. The air is thick. It tastes of metal. It tastes of blood.

We run. We run down into the dark. We run down into the heart of the Spire.

The core room is open. The doors are broken. The machine is exposed. It is a sphere of light. It is a sphere of glass. It is spinning. It is cracking.

And Silas is there.

He stands before it. He holds a device. It is small. It is black. It glows with a red light.

"What is that?" I ask.

My voice is small. My voice is weak.

Silas turns. He smiles. It is a sad smile. It is a kind smile.

"Freedom," he says.

He presses the button.

The light bursts. It is white. It is blinding. It is silent.

I fall. I hit the floor. I do not feel pain. I do not feel anything.

When I open my eyes, the light is gone. The machine is gone. The room is empty. There is only dust. There is only silence.

Silas is dead.

He lies on the floor. His eyes are open. They are closed now. He looks peaceful. He looks like a child.

I crawl to him. I touch his face. It is cold. It is still.

I look at the hole in the floor. It leads down. It leads into the dark. It leads into the unknown.

I do not understand. I do not understand what he did. I do not understand why he did it.

I stand up. My legs are weak. My head is spinning.

I look at the grey coat. It is torn. It is stained. It is ruined.

I take it off.

I hold it in my hands. It is light. It is nothing.

I throw it into the hole.

It falls. It falls into the dark. It disappears.

I am naked. I am free. I am alone.

I walk to the stairs. I walk up. I walk out of the Spire.

The air is cold. The air is clean. The sky is black. The stars are bright.

I have never seen the stars so clearly. I have never felt the wind so strongly.

I am a Warden. No, I am not. I am a man.

I walk into the night. I walk into the world.

I do not look back.

***

The memory fades. It is like smoke. It is like mist. It drifts away.

I am in a room now. It is white. It is clean. It is bright.

I am in a hospital. I am in a cell. I do not know which.

The doctor comes. He is old. He is kind. He wears a white coat.

"You are awake," he says.

I nod. I cannot speak. My throat is dry. My throat is tight.

"Where are you?" I ask.

My voice is a rasp. It is a whisper.

"You are in the Infirmary," he says. "You have been here for three days."

"Three days?"

I do not believe him. I do not believe anything.

"Who am I?" I ask.

"Your name is Elias," he says. "You are a Warden."

I shake my head. I shake my head hard.

"No," I say. "I am not."

He looks at me. He looks at my hands. They are bare. They are clean. There is no ring. There is no mark. There is no grey coat.

"Did you do it?" he asks.

I do not answer. I do not know.

"Did you destroy the core?"

I close my eyes. I see the light. I see Silas. I see the grey coat falling.

"Yes," I say.

The doctor nods. He writes something down. He writes with a pen. The pen makes a sound. It is a small sound. It is a final sound.

"You saved the world," he says.

I laugh. It is a dry laugh. It is a bitter laugh.

"I destroyed it," I say.

"No," he says. "You set it free."

I look out the window. The sky is blue. The sun is bright. The birds are singing.

They do not know. They do not know what is coming. They do not know what has been broken.

I did not save the world. I broke the silence. I let the noise in.

I look at my hands. They are trembling. They are strong. They are empty.

I am free. I am trapped.

The doctor leaves. The door closes. The click is loud.

I am alone.

I stand up. I walk to the door. I try the handle. It is locked.

I look at the lock. It is simple. It is old.

I remember the device. I remember the red light. I remember the sound.

I know how to break it. I know how to open it.

I do not do it.

I sit down. I sit on the floor. I lean against the wall.

I wait.

I wait for the noise. I wait for the scream. I wait for the end.

But it does not come.

The silence holds.

The world turns.

The sun rises.

The sun sets.

I am here.

I am still here.

I look at my hands. I clench them. I unclench them.

I am a Warden. I am a man. I am a ghost.

I do not know who I am.

I do not need to know.

I only need to wait.

The watch is gone. I do not know the time. I do not care.

Time is a river. I am a stone. The water flows over me. The water washes me clean.

The silence is not empty. It is full. It is full of memory. It is full of loss. It is full of hope.

I close my eyes. I breathe in. I breathe out.

I am here.

I am here.

I am here.
