The Distant Threshold
The cup broke.
It was a small thing. A chipped rim. A hairline fracture running down the side. I held it in my hands. It felt cold. It felt dead.
I am not human. I have never been human. I am a thing of the court. I am the shadow in the corner. I am the whisper in the hall.
The King looked at me. He did not see me. He saw the cup.
"Who broke it?" he asked.
His voice was loud. It shook the dust from the beams.
I said nothing. I am quiet. I am always quiet.
Thomas stood up. He is my friend. He is the only one who knows. He is the only one who speaks to me.
"It was an accident, Your Majesty," Thomas said. His voice was steady. He is brave. I am not brave. I am afraid.
The King looked at Thomas. Then he looked at me.
"Throw it out," the King said.
Thomas picked up the cup. He held it to his ear. He listened to the silence inside.
"It is still whole," Thomas said. "It is only the glaze."
The King shook his head. "It is broken. Broken things have no place here."
I watched Thomas. I watched his hands. They were shaking. Just a little. Just enough to see.
He looked at me. His eyes were wet. He did not cry. He never cries. He is strong. I am weak.
"Give it to me," Thomas said.
The King leaned back. "What?"
"Give it to me, Your Majesty. I will mend it. I am an artist. I can make it beautiful."
The King laughed. It was a dry laugh. Like leaves skittering on stone.
"You?" The King pointed at Thomas. "You are a servant. You sweep the floors. You do not create."
Thomas bowed. His head went down. His shoulders hunched.
"I am a servant," Thomas said. "But I have hands."
The King waved him away. "Go."
Thomas walked to me. He took the cup from my hand. His fingers were cold. My fingers were cold. We are the same.
He put the cup in his pocket. He walked out of the room. The door closed. The sound was a thud.
I was alone.
The court is a machine. It turns. It grinds. It crushes. I am a gear. I have no face. I have no name. I am just the thing that listens.
I sat on the floor. The stone was hard. It hurt. I liked the hurt. It was real.
I remembered my first day. I was young. Or I felt young. I was a spirit of the wind. I blew through the windows. I made the candles dance. I was free.
Then I met the King. He was young then too. He was kind. He looked at me and smiled.
"Stay," he said. "Be my shadow."
And I stayed.
Time passed. The King changed. His face grew hard. His eyes grew cold. He stopped seeing me. He started seeing threats.
He saw shadows in the walls. He heard whispers in the wind. He saw betrayal in every smile.
He built walls. High walls. Thick walls. He locked the doors. He barred the windows.
The court became a prison.
I was the only one who stayed. The others left. The lords went home. The ladies went home. The servants went home.
I stayed. I am bound. I am the shadow. A shadow does not leave the body.
Thomas stayed too. He came back every day. He swept the floors. He dusted the shelves. He kept the fire burning.
He talked to me.
"Are you there?" he would ask.
"Yes," I would say.
"Are you safe?"
"Yes."
Lies. I am never safe. I am never happy. I am just here.
One day, the King found the cup. It was a gift. From a queen who was long dead. It was blue. It was white. It was perfect.
The King loved it. He held it up to the light. He admired it.
"Beautiful," he said.
I looked at it. I saw the flaw. A tiny bubble in the glass. A tiny imperfection.
I wanted to tell him. I wanted to say it was flawed. I wanted to say it was not perfect.
But I said nothing. I am quiet.
He kept the cup on his desk. He touched it every day. He polished it. He guarded it.
Then, one morning, it was gone.
The King screamed. He threw things. He broke things.
"Find it," he roared. "Find the thief."
They searched the palace. They searched the gardens. They searched the streets.
They found nothing.
They accused the servants. They accused the guards. They accused the lords.
I watched. I listened. I saw nothing.
Then, Thomas came to me.
He was pale. His face was gray.
"I found it," he said.
My heart stopped. Or it tried to. I do not have a heart. I have a core. A cold core.
"Where?" I asked.
"In the garden," he said. "Under the rosebush."
"Why?" I asked.
"I was walking," he said. "I saw it. I picked it up."
"Why did you not give it back?"
He looked at me. His eyes were dark.
"I wanted to see it," he said. "I wanted to hold it. Just for a moment."
A moment. How long is a moment?
The King was angry. He was furious. He burned with rage.
"Who has my cup?" he shouted.
Thomas stepped forward.
"I have it," he said.
The King’s face turned red. Then purple. Then black.
"You?" The King’s voice was a whisper. It was worse than a shout.
"Yes, Your Majesty."
"Give it to me."
Thomas took the cup from his pocket. It was the same cup. The chipped rim. The hairline fracture.
He had broken it.
I knew it. I had seen him. I had seen him drop it. I had seen it shatter.
I had seen him put the pieces in his pocket.
I had said nothing.
I am quiet.
The King took the cup. He looked at it. He saw the crack.
His face went white.
"You broke it," the King said.
"I am sorry," Thomas said.
"You are fired," the King said.
"No, Your Majesty. You are banished. You are out of this palace. You are out of this kingdom."
Thomas bowed. He picked up his bag. He walked to the door.
He stopped. He turned to look at me.
"Goodbye," he said.
I looked at him. I wanted to speak. I wanted to say I forgive you. I wanted to say I understand.
I said nothing.
He walked out. The door closed.
I was alone.
The King looked at the cup. He held it in one hand. The edges were sharp. They cut his skin.
Blood dripped down. Red drops on the blue glass.
He looked at the blood. He looked at the crack.
He saw something.
His face changed. The anger left. The fear left.
He saw the truth.
The cup was not broken. It was just different. The crack was a line. The line was a path. The path led somewhere.
He looked at me.
For the first time, he saw me.
"Who are you?" he asked.
I did not answer. I am the shadow.
He put the cup down. He walked to the window. He opened it.
The wind came in. It blew his hair. It blew his face.
He looked out. He looked at the world.
He saw the trees. He saw the sky. He saw the people.
He saw them as they were. Not as threats. Not as enemies.
As people.
He turned back to me.
"I am sorry," he said.
I did not move. I am the shadow.
He picked up the cup. He walked to the door. He opened it.
He walked out.
I followed. I am the shadow.
We walked out of the palace. We walked into the street.
The people stared. The King was in rags. He was barefoot. He was holding a broken cup.
I was beside him. I was invisible. Or I was visible. I do not know.
We walked for a long time. We walked until the sun went down.
We walked until the stars came out.
We stopped at the edge of the forest.
The King sat down. He put the cup in his lap.
He looked at me.
"Will you stay?" he asked.
I looked at him. I looked at the cup.
I thought of Thomas. I thought of his face. I thought of his hands.
I thought of the silence.
I said nothing.
The King nodded. He understood.
He stood up. He picked up the cup. He walked into the forest.
I followed.
I am the shadow.
I am quiet.
I am here.
The cup is in my hand.
It is broken.
It is whole.
I do not know.
I walk.
The trees are dark.
The stars are bright.
I walk.
I am alone.
I am not alone.
I am the shadow.
The shadow does not leave.
The shadow waits.
The shadow sees.
The shadow knows.
But the shadow does not speak.
I walk.
The path is long.
The path is dark.
I walk.
I am the shadow.
I am the wind.
I am the dust.
I am the silence.
I am the end.
I am the beginning.
I walk.
The cup is in my hand.
It is cold.
It is warm.
I do not know.
I walk.
The stars fade.
The sun rises.
I walk.
I am the shadow.
I am the light.
I do not know.
I walk.
The cup is in my hand.
It is broken.
It is whole.
I do not know.
I walk.
The end is near.
The end is far.
I walk.
I am the shadow.
I am the truth.
I am the lie.
I do not know.
I walk.
The cup is in my hand.
It is mine.
It is yours.
It is his.
I do not know.
I walk.
The world turns.
The world breaks.
The world mends.
I do not know.
I walk.
I am the shadow.
I am the light.
I am the dark.
I am the dawn.
I am the dusk.
I am the night.
I am the day.
I am the now.
I am the then.
I am the never.
I am the always.
I walk.
The cup is in my hand.
It is broken.
It is whole.
I do not know.
I walk.
I am the shadow.
I am the friend.
I am the enemy.
I am the stranger.
I am the self.
I am the other.
I do not know.
I walk.
The path ends.
The path begins.
I do not know.
I walk.
I am the shadow.
I am the silence.
I am the sound.
I am the voice.
I am the word.
I am the meaning.
I do not know.
I walk.
The cup is in my hand.
It is broken.
It is whole.
I do not know.
I walk.
I am the shadow.
I am the end.
I am the beginning.
I am the middle.
I am the space.
I am the time.
I am the now.
I walk.
The cup is in my hand.
It is broken.
It is whole.
I do not know.
I walk.
I am the shadow.
I am the light.
I am the dark.
I am the truth.
I am the lie.
I am the silence.
I am the sound.
I am the voice.
I am the word.
I am the meaning.
I am the nothing.
I am the everything.
I walk.
The cup is in my hand.
It is broken.
It is whole.
I do not know.
I walk.
I am the shadow.
I am the end.
