The Faded Bouquet
The rain does not fall here. It seeps.
You stand in the center of the Hall of Echoes. The floor is black marble, worn smooth by centuries of footsteps that no longer exist. The air tastes of copper and wet wool. You are a Sergeant. You know this because the badge on your chest is heavy, cold, and indented into your flesh as if it were growing there. You have worn it so long you cannot remember a time without its weight. You are not alone. There are others. They move through the mist like smoke, their faces obscured by the fog that clings to the high, vaulted ceilings.
The building is vast. It stretches upward into a darkness that swallows the light. It is a place of industry, though the machines are silent. Pipes run along the walls, sweating condensation. Gears hang from the rafters, still, rusted, frozen in time. It is a factory of memory. You know this. You have always known this. But you do not understand why you are here. You are waiting for orders.
A voice speaks. It comes from everywhere and nowhere. It is the voice of your Commander. It is calm. It is absolute.
Hold the line.
You do not move. Your boots are slick. The marble is slippery beneath you. You watch the mist. It curls around your ankles. It feels alive. It presses against your legs. You feel a tremor in the floor. A vibration. Something is coming.
The Commander speaks again.
Do not let them pass.
You look at the figures in the fog. They are not soldiers. They are not enemies. They are shapes. Shadows with human proportions. They drift toward you. They do not walk. They slide. Their movements are fluid, wrong. They have no faces. Where their faces should be, there is only a smooth, pale void.
You raise your rifle. The wood is damp. The metal is cold. You do not know where the bullets came from. You do not know if they are real. You pull the trigger.
The sound is a crack, sharp and violent in the silent hall. The figure in front of you stops. It does not fall. It dissolves. A wisp of gray smoke rises from where it stood. Then it is gone.
You fire again. And again. The smoke thickens. The mist rises higher. It reaches your knees. Your thighs. Your waist. It is cold. It bites into your skin. You shiver. You are afraid. You have never been afraid like this. Not on the front lines. Not when the shells fell. This fear is different. It is deep. It is in your bones.
The figures keep coming. They do not scream. They do not shout. They simply drift. They reach for you. You can feel their hands. They are not hands. They are cold spots in the air. They touch your shoulders. Your face. They want to be you.
You fall to your knees. The marble is hard. It hurts. You try to stand. Your legs will not work. The mist is at your chest. You can feel it in your lungs. It tastes like ash.
The Commander’s voice is louder now. Closer.
Stand up, Sergeant.
You try to obey. You push against the floor. Your muscles burn. You are strong. You are trained. You are a soldier. You rise. One knee. Then two. You are standing. The figures surround you. They are close. So close. You can hear them breathing. It is a sound like wind through broken glass.
You look at the nearest one. Its face is empty. You see your own reflection in the void. You see your eyes. They are red. You see your mouth. It is open. You are screaming. But no sound comes out.
The figure reaches for you. You grab it. Your hands close around its neck. It is solid. It is warm. It is alive. You squeeze. You twist. You pour all your strength into it. All your pain. All your fear. You are trying to kill it. You are trying to kill yourself.
The figure breaks. It shatters like ice. Fragments of gray light scatter into the air. You are free. But there are more. They come from the walls. They come from the floor. They are everywhere.
You run.
You run through the Hall of Echoes. The mist parts before you. It closes behind you. You run toward the far end of the hall. There is a door. It is large. Iron. Rusted. It is closed.
You reach it. You slam your body against it. Once. Twice. Three times. The door does not move. It is heavy. It is immovable.
You turn back. The figures are gone. The mist is gone. The hall is empty. The silence is absolute.
You are alone.
You look down at your hands. They are empty. The rifle is gone. The badge on your chest is gone. You are naked. You are small. You are afraid.
The door opens.
It swings open slowly. Creaking. The sound is loud in the silence. You step through.
You are in a room. It is small. It is white. The walls are bare. There is a bed. There is a chair. There is a window.
You look out the window.
It is night. The rain is falling. Hard. Fast. You are in a house. It is an old house. It is in a village. You know this place. You have been here before.
You look at the bed. There is a woman on it. She is sleeping. Her hair is spread out on the pillow. Her face is peaceful.
You walk toward her. Your feet do not make a sound. You stand over her. You watch her breathe. In. Out. In. Out.
You know her. You have always known her. She is your wife. Her name is Margaret.
You reach out. You touch her face. Her skin is warm. She stirs. Her eyes open.
She looks at you.
She smiles.
You smile back.
You sit on the edge of the bed. You take her hand. It is small. It is soft. You hold it tight.
The rain continues to fall outside. The wind howls. The house creaks.
You close your eyes. You are safe. You are home.
You open your eyes.
You are in the Hall of Echoes.
The mist is back. The figures are back. They are surrounding you. You are on your knees. The marble is hard. You are screaming.
The Commander’s voice speaks.
You failed.
You look at your hands. They are covered in blood. It is not your blood. It is gray. It is the blood of the mist.
You look at the figures. They are not figures. They are people. You see their faces now. They are the villagers. They are the people you protected. They are the people you failed.
You see Margaret. She is among them. Her face is empty. Her eyes are voids. She reaches for you.
You do not run. You do not fight. You stand.
You look at the Commander. You do not see him. You see the mist. You see the fog. You see the darkness.
You understand now.
The Hall of Echoes is not a place. It is a state of mind. It is the space between life and death. It is the place where the dead go when they are not ready to leave. It is the place where the living go when they are not ready to live.
You are not a soldier. You are a ghost. You have been dead for a long time. You died in the war. You died protecting the village. You died saving Margaret.
But you did not let go.
You held on. You held on to the badge. You held on to the duty. You held on to the guilt. You held on to the fear.
And so you are here. In the Hall of Echoes. In the mist. In the loop.
You look at Margaret. You look at her empty face. You see the love in it. It is primal. It is instinctual. It is the only thing that is real.
You let go.
You let go of the badge. It falls from your chest. It hits the marble. It shatters.
You let go of the rifle. It dissolves in the mist.
You let go of the duty.
You let go of the fear.
You look at Margaret. You reach for her. She reaches for you.
Your hands meet.
The mist breaks. The figures dissolve. The Hall of Echoes crumbles. The pipes burst. The gears fall. The roof collapses.
You are falling.
You are falling through the dark.
You are falling through the rain.
You are falling through the night.
You land.
You are on the floor of the bedroom. You are in the house. It is morning. The sun is shining through the window.
Margaret is awake. She is sitting up in bed. She is looking at you.
She is smiling.
You are smiling.
You are alive.
You are home.
You open the door. You step out into the street. The village is quiet. The rain has stopped. The air is fresh. It smells of earth and grass.
You walk. You do not know where you are going. You do not need to. You are free.
You look back at the house. The window is dark. The door is closed.
You turn away. You walk into the light.
The mist is gone.
The silence is broken.
The rain begins to fall again. But it is different. It is clean. It is pure. It washes the world. It washes you.
You are clean.
You are free.
You are alive.
