The Pale Mist

You are in the cell. The stone is cold. It presses against your back like a wet shroud. You do not move. You are still. Your mother is dead. They took her. They say she is in the lower vault. You do not believe them. You know they lie. The mist rises from the floor. It is pale. It is thick. It tastes of iron and rot.

"Are you awake?"

The voice comes from the dark. It is soft. It is gentle. You turn your head. Your neck cracks. A man sits in the corner. He is young. He is pale. His eyes are wide. He holds a candle. The flame trembles.

"Yes," you say. Your voice is a rasp. It is not your voice. It is the voice of the dead.

"I am Thomas," he says. He smiles. It is a sad smile. "I am here to help you."

You do not trust him. You are here because of the system. The Guild. The Order. They took your mother. They took your name. They took your life. You are a shadow now. A ghost in a box.

"Why are you here?" you ask.

"I want to save you," he says. "I want to save us."

He stands up. He moves toward you. He extends his hand. The candlelight flickers. It casts long shadows on the wall. The shadows dance. They twist. They look like hands. They look like chains.

"I don't want saving," you say. "I want out."

Thomas shakes his head. "There is no out. Only in. Only down. But I have a way."

He pulls a key from his pocket. It is small. It is silver. It glints in the dim light. You stare at it. It is beautiful. It is dangerous.

"This key opens the gate," he says. "But you must choose."

"Choose what?"

"Who to leave behind."

The air grows heavy. The mist thickens. It crawls up your legs. It cools your skin. You feel a chill. It is not from the stone. It is from the air. It is from the truth.

"My mother," you say.

Thomas looks at you. His eyes are wet. "No. Not her. You. Or me."

The words hit you. They are sharp. They are cold. You blink. You do not understand.

"What?" you whisper.

"The gate only holds one soul," he says. "It is a trap. It has always been a trap. The Guild knows. The Order knows. They send you here to choose. To break you. To make you weak."

You pull back. Your heart pounds. It hits your ribs. It hits your throat. You cannot breathe. The mist swirls around you. It whispers. It hisses. It speaks in voices you know. It speaks in your mother’s voice.

"Run, my love," it says. "Run."

You look at Thomas. You look at the key. You look at the dark.

"I don't believe you," you say.

"I know," he says. "That is why I am here. To prove it."

He holds out the key. "Take it. Try it. If I lie, you will die. If I tell the truth, you will live. But only if you sacrifice."

You reach out. Your hand shakes. Your fingers brush the cold metal. It burns. It numbs. You take it.

"Where is the gate?" you ask.

Thomas points to the wall. Behind the stone. Behind the mist.

"Look," he says.

You turn. You stare. The stone is solid. It is grey. It is rough. There is no door. There is no seam. There is nothing.

"You see?" you say. "There is nothing."

"Look closer," he says. "Close your eyes. Listen."

You close your eyes. The world goes black. You hear the drip of water. You hear the scrape of rats. You hear your own breath. And then you hear it. A hum. A low, deep hum. It vibrates in your bones. It vibrates in your teeth.

You open your eyes. The stone is gone. In its place is a hole. It is small. It is dark. It is deep.

"This is it," Thomas says. "This is the path."

You step forward. Your foot hovers over the edge. The mist rushes in. It fills the hole. It fills your lungs.

"Who must I sacrifice?" you ask.

Thomas steps back. He steps into the dark. "Me," he says. "I must stay. The gate closes behind the one who enters. Someone must hold it open. Someone must pay the price."

"No," you say. "No. I will not do this."

"You must," he says. "Your mother is waiting. She is in the mist. She is calling you. You must go to her."

The mist rises. It forms a shape. It forms a face. It is your mother’s face. Her eyes are closed. Her mouth is open. She is singing. It is a lullaby. It is a song of death.

"Come," she says. "Come to me."

You want to go. You want to hold her. You want to die with her. But you remember. You remember the Guild. You remember the Order. You remember the rules.

"If I go," you say, "I am gone. I am dead."

"Yes," Thomas says. "But she will be free."

"Free?" you say. "What does that mean?"

"It means she is at peace," he says. "It means the cycle ends. It means you break the chain."

You look at the key. You look at the hole. You look at Thomas. He is smiling. It is not a sad smile now. It is a proud smile. He knows. He knows the truth.

"I don't want to be free," you say. "I want her."

"Then take me instead," he says. "Take my place. Let me go to her. I will hold the gate for you. I will pay the price."

You stare at him. He is young. He is kind. He is a stranger. But he is offering himself. He is offering his life for yours.

"Why?" you ask.

"Because I am lost," he says. "And you are found. You have a purpose. I do not."

You feel a tear slide down your cheek. It is hot. It is salty.

"If I do this," you say, "I am a monster."

"No," he says. "You are a mother. You are a daughter. You are a woman. And you are free."

The mist swirls. It grows stronger. It pulls at you. It pulls at the key.

"Decide," Thomas says. "The mist is rising. It will take you soon. If you do not choose, you will be lost. You will be nothing."

You look at the hole. You look at the mist. You see your mother. She is reaching for you. Her hand is open. Her fingers are long. She is beautiful. She is terrible.

You think of the system. You think of the walls. You think of the years. You have been here for years. You have been here for a lifetime. You have given everything. You have given your name. You have given your body. You have given your soul.

And now they want your heart.

You look at Thomas. He waits. He does not move. He does not blink. He is still.

"I will not sacrifice you," you say.

"Then you will stay," he says.

"Yes," you say. "I will stay."

"But your mother—"

"Is dead," you say. "She is already dead. The mist is a lie. The song is a lie. The face is a lie. It is only the mist. It is only the rot. It is only the system."

Thomas frowns. "But the key—"

"The key is a trap," you say. "It is a test. They want to see if we will break. They want to see if we will choose death over life. They want to see if we will sacrifice."

You step back. You move away from the hole. You move away from the mist. You move toward the wall. You lean against the stone. It is cold. It is hard. It is real.

"I choose to stay," you say. "I choose to be here. I choose to be alive. Even if it is in a cage. Even if it is in the dark. I choose to be here."

Thomas looks at you. His face changes. It softens. It clears.

"You are wise," he says. "You are strong."

"I am tired," you say.

"Rest," he says. "I will watch the mist. I will keep you safe."

You close your eyes. The mist swirls. It whispers. It screams. It begs. You do not listen. You breathe in. You breathe out. You feel the stone. You feel the cold. You feel the life.

It is small. It is quiet. It is yours.

The mist rises. It fills the cell. It touches your face. It tastes of iron. It tastes of rot. It tastes of truth.

You do not move. You do not flinch. You are still.

You are here.

You are alive.

The mist passes. It thins. It fades. The candle flickers. It dies. The dark returns.

But you are not alone.

You hear a breath. It is not yours. It is Thomas. He is there. He is watching. He is guarding.

You smile. In the dark, you smile.

It is a small smile. It is a real smile.

You are home.
