The Distant Crown

The bells of St. Jude’s did not ring for peace. They shrieked.

You wake to the sound. It is not a call to prayer. It is a scream of iron against iron, a jagged tear in the fabric of the morning. You are on the cobblestones of the High Ward. The stone is cold. It bites into your knees. You are the Warden. You are the shield. You are the wall between the city and the dark.

But the dark is inside the wall.

The crowd presses against you. They do not push. They do not need to. Their weight is a solid thing, a river of wool and leather and fear. They look at you. Their eyes are wide. They are not eyes. They are holes. Through those holes, you see your own reflection. It is not a reflection. It is a judgment.

They call you the Butcher.

You do not answer. You have not spoken in three days. Your throat is a dry well. You hold your sword. The steel is warm. It has absorbed the heat of your hand. It knows what you are about to do.

The Council has spoken. The decree is in your hand. It is a scroll of parchment, brittle as old bone. It says: The Plague is within. The source is unknown. The source must be purged.

You know the source.

It is your brother.

He is not a monster. He is a man. He is sick. He is shivering in the cellar of the bakery on Miller’s Lane. He is coughing blood onto the flour sacks. He is asking for water. He is asking for you.

But the city does not want a brother. It wants a scapegoat.

You move through the crowd. It parts for you, not out of respect, but out of terror. They step back. They cross themselves. They whisper. *He is cursed. He is the carrier. He is the end of us.*

You are the one who must kill him.

The irony is a knife in your gut. You are the protector. You are the one who swears to defend the innocent. But the innocent are the ones you must kill. The law is a cage. And you are the lock.

You reach the bakery. The door is barred. The wood is splintered. Inside, the air is thick with the smell of yeast and rot. You push the door open. It groans.

Thomas is there.

He is lying on a bed of straw. He is small. He was always small. He was the one who hid in your shadow when the dogs barked. He was the one who held your hand when our mother died. Now, he is a stranger. His face is gray. His lips are black. His eyes are closed.

You stand over him.

The sword is heavy. It is not a tool. It is an accusation.

"Thomas," you say.

Your voice is a rasp. It sounds like gravel in a tin cup.

He stirs. His eyes open. They are not the blue you remember. They are the color of old mud. He looks at you. He does not see the Warden. He sees his brother.

"Ed," he whispers.

The name breaks you.

It is a sound. It is a thing. It is a thread that pulls you back to the garden, to the time you were seven, and he was five, and the world was soft and green and safe.

"I am here," you lie.

You are not here. You are a weapon. You are a function. You are the state.

He tries to sit up. He cannot. His body is a ruin. He coughs. The blood is red. It is bright against the gray of his skin.

"Do it," he says.

His voice is flat. He has accepted it. He has accepted the city. He has accepted you.

"No," you say.

The word is a wall.

You lower the sword.

You are a fool.

The crowd outside is waiting. They are chanting. *Burn him. Burn him. Burn him.* The rhythm is a drumbeat. It is in your teeth. It is in your blood.

You look at Thomas. He is looking at the ceiling. He is counting the cracks. He is counting the years. He is counting the life he will not have.

"I cannot," you say.

Thomas smiles. It is a terrible thing. It is a smile of pity.

"You must," he says.

He is right.

If you do not kill him, they will kill you. They will kill him. They will burn the bakery. They will burn the street. They will burn the city. And for what? For a body? For a ghost?

The plague is not in Thomas. The plague is in the fear. The fear is the fire. And you are the wood.

You raise the sword again.

Your hand is steady.

You are a professional.

You do not tremble.

You do not weep.

You are the stone.

You bring the blade down.

The sound is wet. It is a thud. It is a silence.

Thomas does not move. His eyes are open. They are fixed on you. They are not angry. They are not afraid. They are empty. They are the sky after the storm.

You have done it.

You have saved the city.

You have saved your brother.

Or have you?

The door bursts open.

Light floods in. It is blinding. It is white.

Men in black armor stand there. They are the King’s Guard. They are not the city militia. They are the law. They are the truth.

Their leader steps forward. He is tall. He is thin. He wears a mask of iron.

"Is it done?" he asks.

His voice is cold. It is the voice of the wind.

"Yes," you say.

"Good," he says.

He walks to the body. He looks at Thomas. He looks at you.

"Take the head," he says.

You freeze.

"What?" you ask.

"Take the head. Hang it on the gate. Let the city see. Let the city know that the Warden is loyal. Let the city know that the law is strong."

You look at Thomas. He is just a man. He is just a body. He is just a brother.

"No," you say.

The Guard leader stops. He turns to you. His mask reflects your face. It is a mask of stone.

"Obey," he says.

"I will not."

The silence is total.

The men in black lower their swords. The steel sings. It is a high note. It is a warning.

You step between the Guard and the body. You are a small man. You are a shadow. But you are the Warden.

"I will not give you his head," you say.

The Guard leader laughs. It is a dry sound. It is the sound of leaves in autumn.

"You are a fool," he says. "You think this is about him? It is not. It is about order. It is about fear. Without fear, there is no order. Without order, there is death. You have killed a man to save a city. Now you must kill the man in you to save the state."

He points his sword at you.

"Drop your weapon."

You do not drop it.

You raise it.

You are not a Warden. You are a brother.

You are not a shield. You are a spear.

You charge.

The Guard leader steps back. He is fast. He is skilled. But you are faster. You are hungrier. You are the rage of a thousand nights. You are the grief of a lifetime.

The steel meets steel.

It is a spark. It is a flash.

You strike. He blocks.

You strike again. He ducks.

You are bleeding. You do not feel it. You are not there. You are in the garden. You are in the rain. You are holding Thomas’s hand.

*Do not let go.*

*Do not let go.*

You strike a third time.

The blade bites deep.

The Guard leader falls. He looks at you. His eyes are behind the mask. They are not evil. They are tired.

"Thank you," he whispers.

He dies.

The other Guards freeze. They look at their fallen leader. They look at you.

You are the Warden.

You are the monster.

You are the hero.

You do not know which one you are.

You look at Thomas. He is still. He is silent. He is dead.

You lower your sword.

The city is quiet.

The bells have stopped.

The sun is rising. It is golden. It is warm. It is beautiful.

You walk out of the bakery.

The crowd is gone. They have scattered. They have returned to their homes. They have closed their doors. They have forgotten.

Or they have not.

You walk to the gate.

You are the Warden.

You stand there.

The city looks at you.

You do not look back.

You are the stone.

You are the wall.

You are the silence.

And in your hand, you hold the sword.

It is clean.

It is cold.

It is yours.

You have won.

You have lost.

You are alone.

The wind blows.

It carries the scent of blood.

It carries the scent of bread.

It carries the scent of death.

And it carries the scent of life.

You breathe it in.

You breathe it out.

You are the Warden.

You are the man who killed his brother.

You are the man who saved the city.

You are the man who was misunderstood.

And you are the man who finally understood.

The truth is not in the sword.

The truth is in the silence.

The truth is in the space between the heartbeats.

The truth is in the fact that you are still here.

That you are still standing.

That you are still alive.

And that is enough.

It is not redemption.

It is not forgiveness.

It is just survival.

And in this city of stone and fear, survival is the only victory.

You turn away from the gate.

You walk into the city.

You walk into the dark.

You walk into the light.

You are the Warden.

You are the shadow.

You are the dawn.

And you are alone.
