The wool cardigan was the only thing in the house that still fit, and it was the only thing that felt like skin.

It was a heavy, charcoal-grey thing, knitted by hand with a tight, rhythmic tension that made the fabric feel almost like leather, and it smelled of lavender and old dust, and of something sharper, something metallic and wet that crept into the fibers whenever the wind picked up outside.

"You're gripping it again," said Mrs. Gable from the doorway, her voice thin as paper, her eyes wide and white-rimmed in the dim light of the living room. "You’re squeezing the yarn so hard I can see the shape of your knuckles through the wool. Let go, Martha. Just for a second. Let it breathe."

Martha did not let go.

Martha looked up, and her eyes were not looking at Mrs. Gable, they were looking through her, through the wall behind her, through the garden, through the street, down into the earth, into the dark, wet place where the foundations of the house were rotting.

"Solid," Martha repeated, and the word sounded like a curse in her mouth. "Solid is a lie we tell ourselves so we can sleep. I can hear the wood screaming, Mrs. Gable. I can hear it in the night. It’s a high, thin sound, like a child crying, or like a wire snapping. It’s been screaming for three days. Since the storm. Since the water came up over the curb and into the yard. The house is trying to push the water out. It’s pushing with its bones. And I am holding the bones together. I am the mortar. I am the glue. If I stop holding the cardigan, if I stop holding myself, the bones will break. And if the bones break, we will be in the water. We will be in the deep, black water, and we will never come up."

Mrs. Gable closed her eyes for a moment, and when she opened them, there was a kind of tired sorrow in them, a deep, resigned grief that seemed to come from a place far below her ribs.
