The Distant Joke

You stand in the courtyard. The stone is cold under your boots. It has been raining. The air smells of wet dust and old iron. You are the Captain. You are the shield. You are the wall. But the wall is cracking. You feel it in your spine. A deep, dull ache. A memory that will not stay buried.

The bells of St. Jude’s ring. They ring for the hour. They ring for the dead. They ring for you. You do not look at the sky. The sky is a bruise. Purple and swollen. It waits to break.

"Captain," a voice says. It is soft. It is weak. It is Thomas. He is young. He is new. His hands shake. He holds his sword like a stick. "Captain, they are coming."

You do not answer. You look at the gate. The iron is black. It is rusted. It holds. It must hold. You are the law. The law is the stone. The stone does not move. The stone does not feel.

"Who?" you ask. Your voice is gravel. It scrapes the silence.

"The Order," Thomas says. "The High Inquisitor. He is here. He brings the seal. The seal of binding."

You close your eyes. You see the seal. It is a brand. It is a letter. It is a name. It is not your name. It is the name you forgot. The name you killed to save yourself.

"Let him pass," you say. "Open the gate."

Thomas looks at you. His eyes are wide. They are full of fear. And something else. Pity. You hate pity. You have always hated pity. Pity is a chain. It is heavier than iron.

"Captain," he says. "Did you know? Did you know what he sought?"

You open your eyes. You look at the gate. The rain has stopped. The air is still. Too still. The silence is loud. It presses against your ears. It presses against your mind.

"I know what I sought," you say. "I sought order."

Thomas nods. He steps back. He steps into the shadow of the arch. He is small. He is afraid. You are big. You are strong. But you are tired. So tired. Your bones are tired. Your soul is tired.

The gate groans. It moves. The sound is like a scream. It is a low, wet sound. It tears through the air. You stand. You straighten your back. You pull your cloak tighter. You are ready. You are always ready. Or so you think.

They come. The Inquisitor walks in the center. He wears black. He wears white. The contrast is sharp. It is violent. He does not look at you. He looks at the ground. He looks at the stones. He counts them. One by one.

Behind him, two guards. They carry the box. The box is wood. It is oak. It is bound with silver. It is heavy. It hums. You hear the hum. It is a low note. It is a warning.

The Inquisitor stops. He is ten feet away. He looks up. His face is pale. His eyes are dark. They are empty. They are like wells. You can see the bottom. It is dry.

"Captain," he says. His voice is calm. It is flat. It has no music. It has no life. "You have served well."

"I have served," you say.

"Indeed." He smiles. It is a thin smile. It is a crack in the mask. "But service has a price. And the price is due."

He gestures to the guards. They step forward. They open the box. Inside, there is a chain. The chain is silver. It is fine. It is delicate. It looks like jewelry. But it is not jewelry. It is a tool. It is a key.

The Inquisitor reaches in. He takes the chain. He holds it out to you.

"Put it on," he says.

You do not move. Your hand rests on your sword. Your fingers are tight. The leather creaks.

"What is this?" you ask.

"It is your memory," he says. "It is the truth. It is the thing you buried."

"I buried nothing," you say. Your voice is hard. It is a blade. "I am clean. I am pure."

The Inquisitor laughs. It is a dry laugh. It is like bones breaking.

"Are you?" he asks. "Look at your hands, Captain. Look at the blood. It is not fresh. It is old. It is dried. It is part of you. It is in your skin. It is in your soul."

You look at your hands. They are rough. They are red. There is a stain. It is dark. It is brown. It is old. You try to wipe it. You rub your thumb against your palm. The stain does not move. It spreads. It crawls. It climbs your wrist.

"It is not mine," you say. "It is the enemy’s. I killed the enemy. I saved the city."

"Did you?" The Inquisitor steps closer. He is close now. You can see the pores in his skin. You can see the sweat on his brow. "Or did you kill yourself? Did you kill the man you were? And did you wear his face? Did you wear his name?"

You draw your sword. The steel sings. It is a high note. It is sharp. It cuts the air. It cuts the silence.

"Stay back," you say.

The Inquisitor does not move. He does not flinch. He looks at you. He looks at the sword. He looks at the chain in his other hand.

"You cannot cut the truth," he says. "You cannot cut the past. You can only carry it. Or you can drop it. But dropping it does not make it go away. It only makes it heavier."

You swing. You swing hard. You swing with all your strength. You swing with all your rage. The sword flies. It passes through the air. It passes through the space between you. It hits the Inquisitor’s shoulder. It does not cut. It does not bleed. The sword bounces off. It rings. It is a dull, hollow ring.

The Inquisitor falls. He falls to his knees. The guards rush forward. They raise their weapons. They charge. They are fast. They are strong. They are many.

You are alone. You are one. You are the Captain. You are the wall.

You fight. You fight with fury. You fight with pain. You swing. You block. You strike. The steel clashes. The sound is loud. It is deafening. It is a storm of metal. You move. You dance. You are fast. You are dead. You are already dead. You are just moving.

Thomas is there. He is in the way. He is crying. He is screaming. He tries to pull you back. He grabs your arm. You shake him off. You strike him. You strike him hard. He falls. He hits the stone. He does not get up.

The guards close in. They surround you. They are a circle of steel. They are a wall of death. You are inside. You are trapped.

The Inquisitor is on his feet. He is bleeding. Blood runs down his side. It is red. It is bright. It is alive. He holds the chain. He holds it out to you again.

"Take it," he says. "Take the truth. Take the burden. Or die with the lie. Which will it be, Captain? Which will it be?"

You look at the chain. You look at the guards. You look at Thomas. Thomas is still on the ground. He is still crying. He is still alive.

You remember. You remember the night. You remember the fire. You remember the child. You remember the scream. You remember the sword in your hand. You remember the blood. It was not the enemy’s blood. It was your blood. It was your sin. You killed the child to save the secret. You killed the child to keep the peace. You killed the child to be the Captain.

The memory hits you. It hits you like a wave. It drowns you. It fills your lungs. It fills your mind. It is heavy. It is crushing. It is the weight of the world.

You drop your sword. The sword hits the stone. It clatters. It stops. The sound is final.

The guards hesitate. They look at you. They look at the sword. They do not move. They are waiting. They are watching.

The Inquisitor walks forward. He walks slowly. He walks to you. He holds the chain. He places it around your neck. The metal is cold. It bites into your skin. It is tight. It is tight. It is there.

You feel it. You feel the weight. You feel the past. You feel the child. You feel the scream. It is in the chain. It is in you. It is always in you.

The Inquisitor steps back. He looks at you. He nods. He turns. He walks away. The guards follow. They do not look at you. They do not see you. They see only the Captain. They see only the wall.

You stand in the courtyard. The rain has started again. It is soft. It is gentle. It washes the dust. It washes the blood. It washes the stone.

You are alone. You are truly alone. You are not the Captain. You are not the wall. You are the man. You are the sinner. You are the ghost.

You look at the chain. It is silver. It is bright. It is beautiful. It is ugly. It is your truth.

You try to pull it off. You pull with your hands. You pull with your strength. You pull with your life. The chain does not move. It is fused. It is part of you. It is your bone. It is your blood.

You cannot take it off. You cannot escape. You are bound. You are bound to the past. You are bound to the crime. You are bound to the pain.

You walk. You walk out of the courtyard. You walk through the gate. You walk into the city. The city is grey. The city is quiet. The people are in their homes. The doors are closed. The windows are dark.

You walk. You walk fast. You run. You run through the streets. You run through the rain. You run through the dark. The chain clinks. It is a rhythm. It is a heartbeat. It is your heartbeat.

You run until you cannot run. You fall. You fall in the mud. You fall in the rain. You lie on your back. You look up. The sky is open. The stars are out. They are cold. They are distant. They do not care.

You are there. You are in the mud. You are in the rain. You are in the dark.

The pain is there. It is in your neck. It is in your chest. It is in your soul. It is constant. It is eternal. It is the cycle. It is the loop. You cannot break it. You cannot end it.

You are the Captain. You are the wall. You are the sin.

You wait. You wait for the dawn. You wait for the end. You wait for the next loop. You wait for the next life. You wait for the next death.

You are still. You are quiet. You are free. You are trapped.

The rain falls. The rain falls. The rain falls.
