The Distant Clue

The feast was a roar.

Candlelight trembled. Wine spilled. The air was thick with smoke and sweat. Aldric sat. He was old. His hands shook. Not from age. From fear. Or perhaps from the weight of the thing in his pocket. A small, cold stone. A seed. It pressed against his ribs. It beat like a second heart.

The Duke laughed. The sound was wet. It gurgled up from the floor. He raised his cup. The gold rim caught the light. He drank. He wiped his mouth. He looked at Aldric.

"Old friend," the Duke said. "You look pale."

Aldric bowed. "I am ill, my lord."

"Rest then."

"I cannot rest."

"Why not?"

Aldric did not answer. He watched the candles. The flames leaned left. Then right. They danced. They were alive. They were hungry. The room was a cave. The chandeliers were stars. The guests were shadows.

The Duke leaned in. His breath smelled of rot. Not food. Rot. Like old leaves. Like wet earth. He smiled. It was a wide smile. Too wide. It showed too many teeth.

"You hold something," the Duke said. "I can see it. In your hand."

Aldric hid his hand. He put it under the table. The stone burned. It was hot now. It had been cold. Now it was hot. It was waking up.

"I hold nothing," Aldric lied.

The Duke’s eyes narrowed. They were black. They were deep. They saw the lie. They saw the truth. They saw the man.

"You are a scholar, Aldric," the Duke said. "You study the old ways. The ways of the soil. The ways of the root. I know what you seek. I know what you have found."

Aldric said nothing. He kept his hand still. He forced his breath to slow. In. Out. In. Out. The stone pulsed. It was a living thing. It was a seed of the White Oak. The Oak that grew in the forbidden grove. The Oak that the Duke had burned. The Oak that the Duke had cursed.

The Duke stood up. The room went quiet. The noise died. The laughter died. The clinking of cups died. Silence fell. It was heavy. It was thick. It pressed on Aldric’s ears.

"Bring him to me," the Duke said.

Two guards moved. They were large. They were silent. They wore iron. They smelled of oil. They grabbed Aldric’s arms. They lifted him. His feet left the ground. He hung in the air. The stone in his pocket was a hot coal. It burned through the fabric. It burned through the skin. He did not cry out. He held his tongue.

They dragged him out. The doors opened. The cold night air hit his face. It was sharp. It was clean. It smelled of pine. Of rain. Of death. They walked down the long corridor. The torches flickered. The shadows stretched. The stone grew hotter. It was a sun in his pocket. It was a star. It was a soul.

They stopped. The doors opened again. This was the courtyard. The garden was dead. The grass was brown. The flowers were black. There was no life here. Only dust. Only ash. The Duke stood by the well. He waited. He looked pleased. He looked hungry.

"Give it to me," the Duke said.

Aldric shook his head.

"I will take it from your body," the Duke said. "I will tear it from your flesh. I will burn your hand. I will peel your skin. It does not matter. I want the seed."

Aldric looked at the Duke. He saw the fear in the Duke’s eyes. Beneath the rage. Beneath the greed. There was fear. The Duke was afraid. He was afraid of the seed. He was afraid of what it would become. He was afraid of the truth.

"The Oak is gone," Aldric said. "You burned it. You killed it. You cannot grow what is dead."

"I can," the Duke said. "I have the power. I have the will. I have the blood of the ancients. I will make it grow. I will make it bleed. I will make it serve me."

He reached out. His hand was long. His fingers were thin. He grabbed Aldric’s pocket. He ripped the fabric. The stone fell. It hit the ground. It did not break. It rolled. It stopped at Aldric’s feet.

Aldric looked down. The stone was glowing. It was white. It was bright. It was blinding. The light spread. It touched the dust. It touched the ash. It touched the dead grass.

A green shoot appeared.

It was small. It was thin. It was fragile. It pushed up through the dirt. It reached for the light. It was alive. It was real. It was the Oak.

The Duke screamed. He fell back. His face twisted. His eyes widened. He covered his mouth. He gagged. The sound was horrible. It was a sound of pain. It was a sound of loss.

Aldric did not move. He stood still. He watched the shoot. It grew. It grew fast. It grew tall. It became a tree. A sapling. A young Oak. Its leaves were silver. Its bark was white. It was beautiful. It was terrible.

The Duke crawled away. He crawled to the wall. He hid in the corner. He shrank. He became small. He became nothing. He was defeated. Not by force. Not by sword. By life. By truth. By the thing he had tried to kill.

Aldric felt a change. The burning in his chest stopped. The pain vanished. He felt light. He felt empty. He felt free. The seed was out. The burden was gone. He had held it too long. He had held it with too much love. Too much fear. Too much hope. Now it was free. Now it was its own.

He looked at the tree. He looked at the Duke. He looked at the guards. The guards stood still. They could not move. They were frozen. They were statues. They were part of the story. They were part of the fate.

Aldric smiled. It was a sad smile. It was a tired smile. It was a smile of peace. He had sacrificed the thing he loved. He had sacrificed his power. He had sacrificed his secret. He had given it to the world. He had given it to the truth.

The tree grew. It grew higher. It touched the sky. The clouds parted. The moon came out. The moon was full. The moon was bright. The moon was white. Like the tree. Like the stone. Like the soul.

Aldric closed his eyes. He felt the wind. It was cool. It was soft. It whispered. It sang. It said his name. It said *Aldric*. It said *Friend*. It said *Rest*.

He leaned against the wall. The stone was gone. The pocket was empty. The hand was open. The hand was empty. The heart was open. The heart was empty.

The Duke wept. He wept for his power. He wept for his pride. He wept for his greed. He wept for his soul. He was alone. He was truly alone. The shadows embraced him. The darkness took him. He was gone. He was dust. He was ash.

Aldric opened his eyes. The tree was there. It was full. It was alive. The leaves rustled. The branches swayed. The air was clean. The air was pure. The air was sweet.

He took a step. His leg was stiff. His body was weak. He was dying. He knew it. The seed had taken his life. The seed had taken his blood. The seed had taken his breath. It was a fair trade. It was a just trade. It was a necessary trade.

He walked toward the tree. He walked slowly. He walked with dignity. He walked with grace. He touched the bark. It was warm. It was soft. It was like skin. It was like life.

He whispered. "It is beautiful."

The tree answered. It rustled. It swayed. It bloomed. White flowers opened. They fell. They landed on his hair. They landed on his shoulders. They landed on the ground. A carpet of white. A burial shroud. A crown.

Aldric sat down. He sat at the base of the tree. He leaned back. He looked up. The leaves formed a canopy. The light filtered through. It was golden. It was holy. It was eternal.

He felt the community. He felt the people. He felt the village. He felt the farm. He felt the land. They were connected. They were one. They were the tree. He was the root. He was the soil. He was the water. He was the sun.

He was no longer alone. He was part of the whole. He was part of the story. He was part of the life.

His eyes closed. His breath slowed. In. Out. In. Out. The last breath left him. It was a sigh. It was a prayer. It was a song. It faded into the wind. It faded into the leaves. It faded into the sky.

The tree grew. It grew stronger. It grew taller. It spread its arms. It reached for the stars. It reached for the future. It reached for the truth.

The Duke was gone. The guards were gone. The night was gone. The morning came. The sun rose. The light broke. The world woke up.

The tree stood. It was alone. It was alive. It was free. It was the clue. It was the answer. It was the sacrifice. It was the redemption.

The wind blew. The leaves danced. The flowers fell. The story ended. The story began. The life continued. The life endured. The life remained.
