The Golden Master

The ink is black. It is wet. It dries. You hold the quill. Your hand shakes. The room smells of dust and old parchment. This is the archive. This is the house of the dead. You are here to sign the ledger. You are here to be gone by nightfall.

Outside, the rain hammers the stone. Inside, the silence is heavy. It presses against your eardrums. It presses against your chest. You look at the seal. It is a circle. It is a ring of gold leaf. It is worn. The metal is thin. The edges are frayed. You have seen this mark before. You have seen it on the door of your childhood home. You have seen it on the letters that came to your father. You have seen it on the silence in your mother’s eyes.

You do not know why you are afraid. You know why you are here. The Court has called you. The High Inquisitor, Lord Vane, stands at the top of the stairs. He wears gray. He speaks softly. He does not raise his voice. He never has to.

"Come forward," he says.

You walk. Your shoes squeak on the floor. The sound is loud. It is too loud. You feel the eyes on you. They are cold. They are hungry.

You reach the desk. The paper is white. It is blank. It waits. You dip the quill. The ink stains the tip. You hesitate. Your hand hovers. The mark is there. The golden ring. It is a symbol of truth. It is a symbol of law. It is a symbol of order. And it is a lie.

"Sign," Vane says.

"I cannot," you say.

Your voice is small. It breaks in the middle. You look at Vane. He tilts his head. He looks at you with pity. This is worse than anger. This is the look of a man who sees a broken tool.

"Why?" he asks.

"Because it is false," you say.

"False?" Vane smiles. It is a thin smile. It does not reach his eyes. "The seal is the source of our authority. The seal is the binding of the spirits. The seal is the law. How can it be false?"

"It is a forgery," you say.

The room goes cold. The air stops moving. The dust hangs still. Vane does not move. He does not blink.

"Who are you to judge the seal?" he asks.

"I am the one who made it," you say.

The silence stretches. It pulls at your bones. You feel the weight of the lie you are telling. It is a heavy stone. It sits in your stomach. You look at the seal again. The gold is dull. The scratches are deep. It has been used too much. It has been rubbed too often. It is tired.

"You made it?" Vane asks. His voice is flat. "You are a clerk. You are a scribe. You are nothing."

"I was a scholar," you say. "I was a child. I was the only one who knew the script. I was the only one who could read the old words. I made the seal to save us. I made it to stop the war. I made it to bind the demons."

Vane laughs. It is a dry sound. Like leaves scraping on stone.

"Demons," he says. "We do not speak of demons. We speak of order. We speak of peace. The seal brings peace. Do you deny the peace?"

"I deny the source," you say.

"Then you deny the peace. Then you are an enemy of the state. Then you are an enemy of the gods."

He steps down. He moves slowly. He is tall. He is thin. He looks like a shadow. He stands before you. He looks down. You look up.

"Sign," he says.

"No," you say.

He does not hit you. He does not shout. He simply looks at you. He looks at you with the certainty of a mountain. He knows you will break. He knows you are weak. He knows you are a child in a man’s body. He knows you are alone.

He turns away. He walks up the stairs. He does not look back. The door closes behind him. The latch clicks. The sound is final.

You are alone. The rain continues. The ink dries on your quill. You look at the seal. You look at the paper. You look at your hand. Your hand is steady now. The fear has gone. It has been replaced by something else. It is a cold thing. It is a hard thing. It is a truth.

You pick up the seal. You hold it in your palm. It is warm. It has been in the fire. It has been in the dark. It has been in the hands of kings. It has been in the hands of liars. It is not yours. It never was yours. But it is yours now.

You place it on the table. You pick up the quill. You do not sign the ledger. You write a single word. You write your name. You write it in the old script. The script that is no longer taught. The script that is no longer read. The script that is the key.

You press the quill into the ink. You drag the tip across the paper. The lines are sharp. The letters are clear. The ink spreads. It soaks into the fibers. It becomes part of the page. It becomes part of the house.

You stand up. You walk to the door. You open it. The hallway is empty. The stairs lead down. The street is wet. The air is cold. You step out.

You do not look back. You do not run. You walk. You walk with purpose. You walk with weight. You know what you have done. You know what it will cost. You know that the seal is now broken. The truth is out. The demons are loose. The order is gone.

But the truth is here. It is in the ink. It is in the paper. It is in the air. It is in the rain. It is in the ground. It is in the bones of the dead. It is in the blood of the living. It is in your heart. It is in your soul.

You walk into the city. The streets are empty. The shops are closed. The people are hiding. They know something is wrong. They feel it. They feel the shift. They feel the break. They do not know why. They do not know who. But they know.

You pass the square. The fountain is dry. The stones are cracked. The trees are bare. The sky is gray. The world is tired. The world is old. The world is ready to end.

But you are not ready. You are not ready to die. You are not ready to be forgotten. You are not ready to be a ghost. You are ready to be seen. You are ready to be known. You are ready to be the truth.

You stop. You look up. The sky is opening. The clouds are parting. A single beam of light hits the ground. It hits the pavement. It hits your face. It is warm. It is golden. It is the color of the seal.

You close your eyes. You feel the light. You feel the heat. You feel the power. It is not yours. It is not his. It is not the King’s. It is not the God’s. It is the light of the world. It is the light of the truth. It is the light of the end.

You open your eyes. The light is gone. The sky is gray again. The rain begins again. The world continues. The lie continues. The order continues.

But the seed is planted. The ink is dry. The name is written. The truth is loose. It will grow. It will spread. It will break the stone. It will break the door. It will break the silence.

You turn. You walk home. Your home is a small room. It is a cold room. It is a dark room. It is yours. You sit on the bed. You put your head in your hands. You wait. You wait for the knock. You wait for the knock that will end it all. You wait for the knock that will begin it all.

You do not know which it will be. You do not know if you will survive. You do not know if the truth will save you. You do not know if the truth will save them.

You only know that you are here. You only know that you are alive. You only know that you are the one who made the seal. You only know that you are the one who broke it.

You breathe. The air is cold. The air is sharp. It fills your lungs. It fills your blood. It fills your heart.

You are not afraid. You are not angry. You are not sad. You are not happy. You are empty. You are full. You are nothing. You are everything.

The door knocks.

It is a soft sound. It is a gentle sound. It is a kind sound.

You open the door.

It is her. It is Eleanor. She is standing in the rain. She is shivering. She is smiling. She is holding a letter. The letter is sealed. The seal is gold. The seal is worn. The seal is you.

She hands it to you. She does not speak. She does not need to speak. The letter is the answer. The letter is the key. The letter is the end.

You take the letter. You break the seal. You read the words. The words are simple. The words are clear. The words are true.

"Go," it says. "Live. Remember."

You look at her. She nods. She turns. She walks away. She disappears into the rain. She disappears into the night. She disappears into the world.

You are alone. You are free. You are bound. You are the master. You are the golden master. You are the one who holds the truth. You are the one who carries the weight. You are the one who walks the path.

You close the door. You lock it. You sit in the dark. You hold the letter. You hold the truth. You hold the light.

The rain stops. The moon rises. The stars come out. The world is quiet. The world is still. The world is waiting.

You are waiting. You are ready. You are the end. You are the beginning. You are the truth.

And the truth is free.
