The Golden Circuit

The house was old. Older than the town. Older than the river that cut the valley in two. We called it the Ashworth Place. My father’s name was Edward. Mine is Julian. I am a scholar. I study the past. I study what is buried. I have been studying the Ashworth Place for three years. I am wrong. I have always been wrong.

The room is cold. The air tastes of dust and dry rot. I sit by the window. The glass is thick. It distorts the world outside. The garden is dead. The grass is brown. It looks like straw. It looks like hair.

My father died last winter. He was eighty. He was strong. He was stubborn. He was like the house. He did not leave. He did not look back. He stayed until the end. He kept his secrets. He kept the keys. He kept the silence.

I came here to find the truth. I came to prove him a fraud. I believed he was a liar. I believed he was a coward. I believed he hid something. I was right. But not in the way I thought.

The house is a maze. The hallways are long. The floors creak. The walls breathe. I know every inch. I have measured it. I have mapped it. I have written it down. The map is wrong. The house changes. No. The house does not change. I change. My mind is weak. My mind is tired.

I see the light. It is late afternoon. The sun is low. It hits the floor. It makes a square of gold. The light moves. It is slow. It is heavy. It feels like a hand. It touches my face. It is warm. It is soft. It is alive.

I remember my childhood. I was five. I was small. My father held my hand. We walked in the garden. He pointed to the tree. The oak tree. It was huge. It was ancient. He said, "Look, Julian. Look at the roots." I looked. I saw dirt. I saw stones. I saw nothing. He said, "It is holding the earth." I did not understand. I was young. I was foolish. I forgot.

I am not foolish now. I am a man. I have a degree. I have a career. I have a life. I have a family. I have a wife. I have a son. They are not here. They are in London. They are safe. They are normal. They do not know. They do not care.

I am alone. I am here. I am with the dead.

The light moves. It reaches the center of the room. It hits the bookshelf. The books are old. The leather is cracked. The spines are faded. I know these books. I have read them. I have quoted them. I have built my life on them. They are lies. They are shadows.

I see the door. It is oak. It is dark. It is closed. I have never opened it. My father forbade it. He said, "It is not for you." He said, "It is for me." I obeyed. I am a good son. I am a good scholar. I obey the rules. I respect the hierarchy.

I stand up. My legs shake. My knees knock. I walk to the door. My heart beats. It is fast. It is loud. It sounds like a drum. It sounds like a warning.

I put my hand on the handle. It is cold. It is smooth. It is heavy. I turn it. It does not move. I push. It does not move. I pull. It does not move. It is locked. It is sealed. It is fixed.

I am angry. I am frustrated. I am afraid. I am not afraid of the dark. I am afraid of the truth. I am afraid of my father. I am afraid of myself.

I remember the winter. The snow was deep. The wind was howling. My father was sick. He was in bed. He was pale. He was thin. I sat by him. I held his hand. His hand was cold. It was like stone. He looked at me. His eyes were bright. They were clear. They were seeing me. Really seeing me.

He whispered. His voice was weak. It was like air. He said, "The gold." I did not know what he meant. I asked, "What gold?" He did not answer. He closed his eyes. He breathed. His breath was shallow. It was slow. It was fading.

He died that night. I was alone. I was in the room. I was with the dead. I did not cry. I did not scream. I was numb. I was empty. I was hollow.

I have been hollow ever since.

I look at the door. I look at the handle. I look at the light. The light is fading. The sun is setting. The shadow is growing. The room is getting dark. The cold is coming back.

I need to open it. I need to know. I need to see. I need to finish. I need to end this.

I take a deep breath. The air is stale. It tastes of iron. It tastes of blood. I push again. I push with all my strength. I push with my soul. I push with my hate. I push with my love.

The door moves. It is a crack. It is a whisper. It is a release. The wood groans. It is a scream. It is a song. It is a memory.

I push. The door opens. It swings wide. It is silent. It is empty.

I step inside.

The room is small. It is square. It is bare. There is no furniture. There is no dust. There is no decay. It is clean. It is bright. It is white.

The light is here. It is everywhere. It is not from the sun. It is not from a lamp. It is from the walls. It is from the floor. It is from the air. It is golden. It is pure. It is liquid.

It fills the room. It fills me. It wraps around me. It touches my skin. It burns. It is warm. It is soft. It is life.

I see my father.

He is not dead. He is not a ghost. He is not a memory. He is there. He is in the light. He is in the gold. He is the gold.

He is smiling. He is peaceful. He is whole. He is not sick. He is not old. He is strong. He is young. He is me.

I realize it. I understand.

He did not hide the gold. He became the gold. He gave it to the house. He gave it to the earth. He gave it to me. He gave it to the future. He gave it to the truth.

He was not a liar. He was a vessel. He was a bridge. He was the wall. He was the door.

I am wrong. I was wrong. I was so wrong.

I thought I was the scholar. I thought I was the finder. I thought I was the master. I am not. I am the key. I am the lock. I am the door.

I am the one who must open it. I am the one who must enter. I am the one who must stay.

I look at the light. I look at my father. I see his face. I see my face. They are the same. They are different. They are one.

I am not afraid. I am not angry. I am not sad. I am full. I am heavy. I am solid.

I close my eyes. I feel the warmth. I feel the pulse. It is my pulse. It is his pulse. It is the pulse of the house. It is the pulse of the earth.

I do not want to leave. I do not want to go back. I do not want to see London. I do not want to see my wife. I do not want to see my son.

They are far away. They are safe. They are normal. They are happy.

I am here. I am home. I am the house. I am the gold.

The light is bright. It is blinding. It is beautiful. It is terrifying. It is right.

I open my mouth. I want to speak. I want to say his name. I want to say my name. I want to say the truth.

But there are no words. There is no language. There is no sound.

There is only the light.

There is only the gold.

There is only the circuit.

It closes. It is complete. It is perfect. It is eternal.

I am Julian Ashworth. I am a scholar. I study the past. I study what is buried.

I am buried.

I am gold.

I am home.

The house stands. The river flows. The sun sets. The night comes. The stars come out. The world turns. The world goes on.

I am gone.

I am here.

I am the silence.

I am the breath.

I am the end.

I am the beginning.

The door is closed. The handle is cold. The room is dark.

It is quiet.

It is done.
