The Faded Quadrant

The hall smelled of roasted boar and old wax. It was a smell that clung to the wool of coats and the skin of hands. The firelight flickered against the stone walls, casting long, jagged shadows. Thomas stood by the pillar. He held his sword loosely at his side. The steel was cold. The air was hot. He watched the King.

King Aldric sat on the high seat. He looked small in the great chair. His face was pale. The candles made his eyes look like pits. Thomas felt a tightness in his chest. He had served the King for twenty years. He had bled for him. He had marched with him. Now the King looked at him with fear.

A woman stood before the throne. She wore blue silk. Her hair was dark and loose. She did not kneel. She stood straight. She was the Queen’s sister. They called her Lady Elara. She was beautiful. She was also dangerous.

"My Lord," Elara said. Her voice was low. It carried across the silent hall. "You have kept me."

Thomas gripped his sword. He did not speak. He waited for the King. The King said nothing. He stared at the floor. His hands trembled.

"I am not a prisoner," Elara continued. "I am a witness."

Thomas stepped forward. One step. Then another. The floorboards creaked. It was a loud sound. Everyone turned to look at him. He stopped in the center of the room. He looked at Elara. He looked at the King. He felt the weight of his armor. It was heavy. It was like a shell.

"You should leave," Thomas said. His voice was rough. It was like gravel.

Elara smiled. It was a small smile. It did not reach her eyes. "And who will take me?"

"No one," Thomas said. "The guards are mine."

The King raised his hand. "Thomas, stand down."

Thomas did not move. He looked at the King. He saw the fear in his eyes. He saw the weakness. He had seen it before. He had seen it in the field. He had seen it when the arrows flew. The King had hidden behind a shield. Thomas had held the line.

"The court has judged you," the King said. His voice shook. "You must accept this."

"I accept nothing," Thomas said. "You have taken her from my house. You have taken her from my life. You have broken the oath."

"Oaths," Elara said. She stepped closer to Thomas. "Oaths are wind. They change direction."

Thomas looked at her. He saw her reflection in the polished surface of his breastplate. She looked like a ghost. She looked like death. He raised his sword. The tip pointed at the King’s throat.

The hall gasped. It was a sharp sound. It was like a snake striking. The musicians stopped playing. The wine in the cups sloshed. Time seemed to stop.

"Put it down," the King whispered. "Thomas, put it down."

Thomas did not lower the sword. He looked at Elara. He wanted to see anger. He wanted to see defiance. He saw only calm. She looked at him with pity.

"You are tired, Thomas," she said. "You are so tired."

He felt the words hit him. They were like needles. They went into his skin. He was tired. He was always tired. The war had never ended. It had just moved indoors. It had moved into his bones.

"I will kill him," Thomas said. It was a fact. It was a promise.

"No," Elara said. "You will not."

"Why not?"

"Because you are not a killer. You are a guardian. And guardians do not slay their masters. Not for love. Not for pride."

Thomas’s hand shook. The sword wavered. The King closed his eyes. He waited for the steel.

Thomas looked around the room. He saw the faces of the lords. They were afraid. They hated him. They had always hated him. He was a soldier. He was a tool. They used him and then discarded him.

He looked at his own reflection again. He saw a man in black iron. He saw a monster. He saw the thing the King feared. He saw the thing the court called a threat.

The image was clear. It was undeniable.

He lowered the sword. He did not sheathe it. He held it at his side. The tip touched the floor. It left a scratch in the wood.

"You are mistaken," Thomas said. His voice was quiet. "I am a killer. I have killed men for less. I have killed for gold. I have killed for glory. I will kill for you."

Elara laughed. It was a soft sound. It was sad. "No, Thomas. You will not. You are bound. You are bound by duty. You are bound by blood. You are bound by the law of this land. And that law is stronger than your rage."

Thomas looked at the King. The King opened his eyes. He looked relieved. He looked triumphant. He looked like a man who had won a game.

"See?" the King said. He smiled. It was a thin smile. "You serve me still. You are my hand. You are my eye. You cannot break the chain."

Thomas felt the chain. He felt it around his neck. It was invisible. It was tight. It was made of words. It was made of history. It was made of the names of his dead brothers.

He turned to leave. He walked past the King. He walked past Elara. He did not look back. The doors opened. The cold night air hit his face. It was sharp. It was clean.

He walked out into the courtyard. The stones were wet with dew. The moon was high. It was full. It was bright.

He walked to the stables. He found his horse. It was a black mare. She was standing still. She breathed out white clouds in the cold air.

Thomas climbed into the saddle. He felt the weight of the armor again. It was heavy. It was unmovable. He rode out of the gate. He did not look back at the castle. He did not look back at the light in the windows.

He rode into the dark. The trees were tall. They were black. They watched him. He felt watched. He felt followed.

He rode for hours. The road was empty. The stars were cold. He felt the horse’s heartbeat under his leg. It was steady. It was strong. It was the only thing that was alive.

He stopped at a crossroads. He looked at the map in his mind. He had a destination. He had a home. He had a daughter. He had a wife. He had a life.

He realized he did not know where home was. He realized he did not know who he was. He realized he had been a mask. He had been a shield. He had been a sword.

He was nothing.

He turned the horse. He rode back toward the castle. The light was still there. It burned in the dark. It called him.

He entered the gate. The guards did not stop him. They stepped aside. They looked at him with fear. He walked to the throne room. The doors were open.

The King was still there. He was drinking wine. Elara was gone. The room was empty except for the King.

Thomas walked in. He walked to the center. He stopped.

"Where is she?" Thomas asked.

The King looked up. He looked surprised. "Who?"

"The woman. The Queen’s sister."

"The court has decided," the King said. He drank. "She has been exiled. She is on a ship. She sails at dawn."

Thomas felt a coldness in his stomach. It spread. It went to his hands. It went to his feet.

"Did you speak to her?" the King asked. "Did you try to save her?"

Thomas looked at the King. He saw the truth. The King had not been afraid. The King had not been weak. The King had been cruel. The King had been testing him. The King had wanted to break him.

Thomas realized the trap. He had walked into it. He had played the part. He had been the tool.

He looked at the floor. He saw the scratch in the wood. It was a thin line. It was a mark. It was his mark.

He drew his sword.

The King jumped up. He fell. He spilled the wine. The red liquid ran across the stone. It looked like blood.

"Thomas!" the King screamed. "No!"

Thomas did not speak. He raised the sword. He brought it down.

The blow was heavy. It was precise. It was final.

The King fell. He did not move. He did not breathe. The wine pooled around his head. It mixed with the dust.

Thomas stood there. He was still. He was quiet. He felt nothing. He felt everything.

He looked at the body. He looked at the sword. He looked at his hands. They were clean.

He sheathed the sword. He walked out of the room. The guards rushed in. They saw the King. They saw Thomas. They raised their weapons.

Thomas did not run. He did not fight. He stood there. He let them come.

He felt the first blade hit him. It was in his side. It was cold. It was sharp.

He felt the second blade. It was in his chest. It was hot.

He fell to his knees. He looked at the guards. They were young. They were afraid. They were just like him.

He looked at the wall. He saw a painting. It was a portrait of the King. The King looked proud. The King looked strong. The King looked eternal.

Thomas smiled. It was a small smile. It was the same smile Elara had given him.

He knew the truth. He had not broken the chain. He had become the chain. He had become the law. He had become the thing that killed.

He closed his eyes. The dark came. It was soft. It was warm. It was home.

The guards dragged him away. The wine ran across the floor. It stained the stone. It stained the memory. The light in the window flickered. It went out. The hall was dark. The hall was silent. The hall was empty.

The story was over. The end was the beginning. The beginning was the end. The wheel turned. The wheel did not stop. The wheel never stopped.

Thomas was gone. The King was gone. The woman was on a ship. The ship was in the sea. The sea was vast. The sea was deep. The sea did not remember.

The dust settled. The dust covered everything. The dust was gray. The dust was quiet. The dust was eternal.

In the morning, the sun would rise. The sun would shine on the castle. The sun would shine on the graves. The sun would shine on the fields. The sun would shine on the faces of the living.

They would not know. They would not remember. They would live. They would die. They would forget.

The quadrant was faded. The lines were blurred. The shape was lost. The meaning was gone.

Only the silence remained.

Only the silence remained.

Only the silence remained.
