The Wistful Witness

The bell did not ring. It struck.

I heard it from the cellar. A low, bronze shudder that traveled up through the stone floor and into the soles of my boots. I stood in the dark. The air was thick with dust and the smell of wet wool. My hand found the hilt of my sword. The leather was worn smooth. It fit my palm like a memory.

"Are you awake, Aldous?"

The voice came from the hatch above. It was thin. It was cold. It belonged to Sir Thomas. He was the Warden. He was the Law.

"I am," I said. My voice was a rasp. I had not spoken in three days.

"Come up."

I did not move.

"The Council has decreed," Thomas said. "The seal must be broken. The Wardenship passes to the next of line. You are done, Aldous. Come up."

I climbed the ladder. The rungs were slick with condensation. I emerged into the guard room. It was a square chamber. The walls were black stone. There was no window. There was only the hearth. The fire was low. It gave off a sickly yellow light.

Thomas stood by the door. He wore his full armor. The steel caught the firelight. It looked like ice. He looked at me. He did not blink.

"Where is the seal?" he asked.

"I do not know," I said.

"Lies," Thomas said. "You are the Keeper. You hold the key. Give it to me."

"I gave it to the mountain," I said.

Thomas laughed. It was a dry sound. Like cracking wood. "The mountain is stone, Aldous. It has no hands. It cannot hold a key. You are losing your mind. The isolation has broken you."

I looked at him. I saw the fear behind the anger. He was afraid of the dark. He was afraid of the silence. He needed the seal to prove he was good. He needed the law to say he was right.

"Take me to the Gate," I said.

"What?"

"Take me to the Gate. Let me see it one last time."

Thomas hesitated. His hand went to his sword. Then he relaxed. He thought I was weak. He thought I was broken. He was wrong.

They marched me through the corridors. The torches burned. The shadows danced. We passed the armory. The racks were empty. We passed the barracks. The bunks were bare. The castle was empty. It had always been empty. We were the ghosts.

We reached the courtyard. The sky was black. The stars were out. They were bright. They were cold. They watched us. They did not care.

The Gate was a wall. It was high. It was wide. It was made of grey granite. In the center was a niche. It was empty.

"Look," Thomas said. "Nothing. There is nothing. You have lost it. You have failed."

I walked to the niche. I placed my hand on the stone. It was cold. It was rough. I closed my eyes. I breathed in. The air smelled of rain. It smelled of blood. It smelled of home.

"I did not lose it," I said.

"Then show me."

I opened my eyes. I looked at Thomas. I saw his face. I saw the truth in his eyes. He wanted to kill me. He wanted to end the question. He wanted to be certain.

"The seal is not a key," I said. "It is a promise."

Thomas drew his sword. The steel sang. It was a sharp, clear note.

"Promise?" he spat. "I serve the King. I serve the State. I do not serve promises. I serve order. Order requires a lock. Order requires a key. You have stolen the order from us."

He charged.

I did not dodge. I stepped forward. I met him.

Our swords clashed. The sound was like a thunderclap. It shook the ground. Sparks flew. They looked like stars falling to earth.

I was strong. I was tired. But I was strong. I pushed him back. He pushed me back. We circled. The fire in the courtyard had died. The only light was the moon. It made our shadows long. It made us tall.

"You are a traitor," Thomas said. He panted. Sweat ran down his face. "You have sold the castle to the dark."

"I have sold nothing," I said. "I have kept everything."

He swung. Low. Fast. I parried. The impact shook my arms. I felt the vibration in my bones.

I looked at the wall. I looked at the niche. I saw it. It was not a hole. It was a mouth. The stone was carved. It looked like a face. It looked like my father.

I remembered.

I remembered the day I was given the sword. I was a boy. My father was old. His hands shook. He put the sword in my hand.

"Keep it safe," he said. "Not from thieves. From us."

"From us?" I asked.

"From those who would lock the door and forget the world outside. The castle is not a fortress, Aldous. It is a bridge. The seal is not a lock. It is a breath. If you lock it, the mountain dies. If the mountain dies, the river rises. If the river rises, the kingdom drowns."

I had kept the promise. I had kept the breath. I had kept the door open.

Thomas swung again. High. Heavy. I ducked. The sword missed my head by an inch. I felt the wind of it. I felt the heat.

I moved. I was faster. I was younger. I was alive.

I struck him. I hit his shoulder. The steel rang. He staggered. He fell to one knee. His sword clattered on the stones.

I stood over him. My sword was raised. The moonlight shone on the blade. It was clean. It was sharp.

I could kill him. It would be easy. It would be done. I would be free.

I looked at his face. He looked up at me. His eyes were wide. He was not angry anymore. He was confused. He was small.

He was a man. Just a man. Trapped in his armor. Trapped in his law.

I lowered my sword.

"No," I said.

Thomas blinked. "No?"

"No," I said. "You cannot lock the door. You cannot keep the breath. You must let it go."

I sheathed my sword. The sound was soft. It was final.

I walked past him. I walked to the wall. I placed my hand on the niche. I did not push. I did not pull. I simply touched it.

I felt a hum. It was low. It was deep. It was the sound of the earth turning. It was the sound of the wind. It was the sound of life.

The stone warmed. The grey granite turned white. The carvings glowed. The face on the wall opened its eyes. They were not eyes. They were windows.

The wall began to split. It was slow. It was silent. A crack appeared. It ran from top to bottom. Then the stones fell away. They did not crash. They dissolved. They turned to dust. The dust flew. It filled the air. It felt like snow.

Behind the wall, there was no darkness. There was light. It was bright. It was warm. It was the light of the valley. It was the light of the morning.

I stepped through.

The air was cool. It was fresh. It smelled of pine. It smelled of water.

I stood on the edge of the cliff. Below me was the valley. It was green. It was alive. Rivers ran. Birds flew. People lived.

I turned back. The castle was gone. The stone was gone. The walls were gone. Only the foundation remained. It was a scar in the earth.

Thomas was still there. He was on his knees. He was staring. His mouth was open. He was breathing. He was alive.

I looked at him. I felt no hate. I felt no joy. I felt only peace.

"Come," I said.

He looked at me. He looked at the light. He looked at the valley.

He stood up. He shook the dust from his armor. He picked up his sword. He did not draw it. He held it at his side.

He walked toward me. He stepped over the rubble. He stepped into the light.

The sun rose. It was golden. It was heavy. It was real.

I turned my back on the castle. I walked into the valley. The grass was soft under my boots. The air filled my lungs. I breathed. I breathed. I was free.

But I knew the cost.

The castle was gone. The order was gone. The law was gone.

I was no longer a Warden. I was no longer a Keeper. I was just a man.

And the mountain was silent.

It had kept its secret. It had kept its breath.

I was the witness. I had seen the truth. I had let it go.

I walked on. The path was long. The day was bright. I did not look back. I could not.

The dust settled. The silence held.

I was free.

I was alone.

The wind blew.

It was warm.
