The Wistful Ashes

"You are late," the voice said. It was not a question. It was a fact, stated with the cold precision of a machine part being placed on an assembly line.

You looked up. The woman stood in the doorway. She wore a grey dress, simple and stiff. Her face was pale. Her eyes were bright.

"I am here," you said.

"You are late."

You checked your watch. It was the correct time. The second hand ticked. One. Two. Three.

"Come in," she said.

You stepped inside. The room was small. The walls were white. The floor was wood. There was a table. There was a chair. There was a window. The glass was clean. Outside, the city moved. Cars. People. Smoke. The air was thick. It smelled of iron and coal.

"Sit," she said.

You sat. The chair was hard. Your back pressed against the wood. You waited. She did not sit. She stood by the window. She looked out. Her reflection was in the glass. You saw her face. It was your face.

No. It was not your face. It was hers. But it looked like yours. The same lines. The same eyes. The same mouth.

"Who are you?" you asked.

"I am the clock," she said.

"I do not understand."

"I am the time you have left."

The room was silent. The tick of the watch on your wrist was loud. It filled the space. Tick. Tick. Tick.

"I have time," you said. "I am young. I have years. I have decades."

"You have moments," she said. "They are small. They are brief. They slip through your fingers. Like water. Like ash."

She turned to you. Her movement was slow. She raised a hand. It was thin. The bones were visible. The skin was tight.

"Look," she said.

You looked at her hand. You looked at your own hand. You held your hand up. It was smooth. It was strong. The fingers were long. The nails were clean.

"Now look again," she said.

You looked. The smoothness was gone. The skin was wrinkled. The veins were blue. The fingers were bent. The knuckles were swollen. The hand was old. It was fragile. It trembled.

You pulled your hand back. You looked at it again. It was young. It was strong. You were confused. You looked at the woman. She was still by the window.

"What is this?" you asked.

"This is the truth," she said. "You think you are the body. You are not. You are the mind. You are the observer. You are the one who watches the body age. You are the one who watches it break."

"I do not believe you."

"You will."

She pointed to the wall. There was a mirror. You had not seen it before. You looked in the mirror. You saw your face. It was young. It was full of life. Then you looked at the woman. She pointed to herself.

"Look at me," she said.

You looked. Her face was old. It was lined. It was tired. The eyes were deep. The cheeks were hollow. The mouth was thin.

"Who are you?" you asked again.

"I am you," she said. "I am what you will become. I am the end. I am the ash."

You felt a chill. It started in your chest. It spread to your limbs. You wanted to stand up. You wanted to run. But your legs did not move. You were frozen. You were trapped.

"Tell me," you said. "Tell me how to stop it."

"You cannot stop it," she said. "You can only choose how you spend it. You can fight. You can rage. You can scream. Or you can accept. You can let it go."

"I will not let it go. I will fight. I will conquer this. I will stay young forever. I will not age."

She smiled. It was a sad smile. It was a knowing smile.

"You will try," she said. "You will spend your energy fighting. You will spend your time resisting. You will be busy. You will be loud. You will be angry. But you will not be free."

"Free?" you asked. "What does that have to do with aging?"

"Freedom is not in the body," she said. "Freedom is in the mind. When the body breaks, the mind can still be free. But only if you stop fighting. Only if you let go."

"I do not want to let go. I want to hold on. I want to keep my strength. I want to keep my beauty. I want to keep my power."

"Then you will be a prisoner," she said. "A prisoner in a cage of bone and skin. You will spend your life trying to hold the sand in your hands. It will slip away. And you will be empty."

The door opened. A man entered. He was tall. He wore a dark coat. His face was sharp. His eyes were cold. He looked at you. He looked at the woman.

"Is it ready?" he asked.

The woman nodded.

"Take her," he said.

The man moved toward you. He reached for your arm. You tried to pull away. He was strong. He held you tight.

"Wait," you said. "Wait. I am not ready. I am not done. I have things to do. I have things to say. I have things to love."

"You have nothing," the man said. "You have only time. And time is short."

He dragged you out of the room. The door closed. The sound was heavy. It was final.

You were in a hallway. The walls were white. The floor was cold. The light was dim. You saw other people. They were in chairs. They were silent. They looked at the wall. Their faces were blank. Their eyes were closed.

You looked at them. You recognized them. They were you. They were different versions of you. Some were young. Some were old. Some were happy. Some were sad. Some were angry. Some were calm. They were all you. They were all the same.

You walked past them. You walked to the end of the hallway. There was a door. It was black. It was heavy. You pushed it open.

You were in a garden. The grass was green. The flowers were red. The sky was blue. The sun was bright. It was warm. It was quiet.

You sat on the grass. You looked at your hands. They were young. They were strong. You looked at your face. It was young. It was full of life.

You felt a peace. It was deep. It was calm. You understood. The woman was not a ghost. She was not a demon. She was a warning. She was a mirror. She showed you the truth. The truth was that you were mortal. The truth was that you would age. The truth was that you would die.

But you also understood something else. The fight was a waste. The resistance was a burden. The desire to hold on was a chain. The only way to be free was to let go. To let the time pass. To let the body change. To let the self dissolve.

You stood up. You walked back to the door. You opened it. You went back to the room.

The woman was still there. She was by the window. She looked at you. She smiled.

"I am ready," you said.

She nodded. She raised her hand. It was thin. It was old.

"Look," she said.

You looked at your hand. It was old. It was broken. It was ash.

You looked at her. She was young. She was strong. She was full of life.

You understood. She was not the future. She was the present. She was the freedom. She was the peace. You were the cage. You were the fight. You were the noise.

You let go. You let go of the fear. You let go of the anger. You let go of the self. You let go of the time.

The room disappeared. The wall disappeared. The chair disappeared. The woman disappeared.

You were alone. You were in the air. You were in the light. You were in the silence.

You were free.

You opened your eyes. You were in a chair. The room was small. The walls were white. The floor was wood. There was a table. There was a chair. There was a window. The glass was clean. Outside, the city moved. Cars. People. Smoke. The air was thick. It smelled of iron and coal.

You looked at your hands. They were young. They were strong.

You looked at the door. It was closed.

You stood up. You walked to the door. You opened it. You stepped out.

You were in a city. It was a big city. It was a dirty city. It was a loud city. It was a fast city. People rushed past you. They looked at their watches. They looked at the ground. They looked at the sky. They did not look at you. They did not see you.

You walked. You walked through the crowds. You walked through the streets. You walked through the parks. You walked through the buildings.

You saw a woman. She was sitting on a bench. She was old. She was alone. She looked at the birds. She looked at the trees. She looked at the sky. Her face was calm. Her eyes were bright.

You stopped. You looked at her. She looked at you. She smiled. It was a sad smile. It was a knowing smile.

You walked away. You walked into the crowd. You disappeared.

You were free.

You were a ghost. You were a memory. You were a whisper.

You were the ash.

You were the wind.

You were the silence.

You were the end.

You were the beginning.

You were the time.

You were the space.

You were the light.

You were the dark.

You were the all.

You were the nothing.

You were the self.

You were the other.

You were the one.

You were the many.

You were the here.

You were the there.

You were the now.

You were the never.

You were the always.

You were the free.
