The Wistful Ashes
The rain lashed the slate. It drummed a frantic, hollow rhythm against the high windows. Inside, the air was thick. It smelled of damp wool and old blood. Thomas stood by the hearth. The fire died. Sparks drifted up. They vanished into the dark.
"Speak," said the Warden. His voice was low. It scraped like stone on stone. He sat in the shadow. The chair creaked.
Thomas did not move. He held his breath. The cold bit his fingers. He looked at the wall. The stone was gray. It was cold. It was eternal.
"You know the charge," the Warden said. "The crime is silence."
Thomas nodded. A small, slow nod. He felt a laugh building. It was wrong. It was a bubble. He swallowed it.
"Silence," the Warden repeated. "In this House, speech is breath. Silence is death."
Thomas looked at the man. The Warden was young. He had sharp eyes. They were bright. They were hungry.
"I have nothing to say," Thomas said. His voice was soft. It was dry. It sounded like dead leaves.
The Warden leaned forward. "That is the lie. You are the Keeper. You hold the Key. You hold the Word. To withhold it is war."
Thomas felt a spike of pain. It was in his chest. It was sharp. It was old. He remembered the village. He remembered the fields. The wheat was gold. The sky was blue. That was before. That was long ago.
"Let me go," Thomas said.
"Go where?" The Warden asked. "There is no where. There is only here. There is only now. The Clock ticks. The Hour looms."
Thomas closed his eyes. He saw the faces. They were blurred. They were kind. They were dead. He saw his sister. She was young. She held a doll. She smiled. Her mouth was red. It was a wound.
"Tell us," the Warden said. "Tell us the Name."
Thomas opened his eyes. He looked at the fire. The coals glowed. They were red. They were hot. They were alive.
"I do not know it," Thomas said.
The Warden stood. He walked to the window. He looked out. The rain was heavy. The trees bent. They broke. They fell.
"You know it," the Warden said. He turned. His face was pale. "I have watched you. You dream. You mutter. You weep. You hold the secret. It eats you."
Thomas felt the heat. It was in his throat. It was a stone. It was heavy. He wanted to speak. He wanted to scream. He wanted to break the walls. He wanted to fly.
"No," Thomas said.
The Warden came back. He stood close. He smelled of sweat. He smelled of fear.
"If you do not speak," the Warden said, "the Door closes. The Light dies. We are all lost. You are the only one who can save us."
Thomas looked at him. He saw the truth. It was a mirror. The Warden was him. The Warden was the boy. The Warden was the exile. They were the same.
"Save us from what?" Thomas asked.
The Warden flinched. He stepped back.
"From the End," he whispered. "From the Long Night. From the Silence that takes all."
Thomas laughed. It was a short sound. It was cruel. It was kind.
"There is no End," Thomas said. "There is only the Now. There is only the Breath. You fear the dark. But the dark is rest. The dark is peace."
The Warden’s face twisted. He was angry. He was afraid.
"Lies," he hissed. "Heresy. You would doom us all. You would let the Clock stop. You would let the Light fade. You are a monster."
Thomas shook his head. He felt calm. He felt light. The stone in his throat was gone. It was dust. It was ash.
"I am no monster," Thomas said. "I am a man. I am free. Freedom is the only truth. Freedom is the only door."
The Warden drew a knife. It was short. It was black. It was sharp.
"Then you die," he said. "And we all die with you. The House falls. The Order ends. The World burns."
Thomas looked at the blade. It glinted. It was cold. It was real.
"Do it," Thomas said.
The Warden hesitated. His hand shook. His eyes were wide. They were wet.
"I cannot," he said. "I am afraid. I am weak. You are strong. You are the Keeper. You must speak. You must save us."
Thomas felt a tear. It was hot. It ran down his cheek. It was salt. It was blood.
"I cannot save you," Thomas said. "You must save yourselves. You must choose. You must speak for yourselves. I have given you nothing. I have given you everything. I have given you the Choice."
The Warden lowered the knife. He dropped it. It clattered on the stone. It rang. It was a bell. It was a warning.
The Warden fell to his knees. He wept. His shoulders shook. He was small. He was broken.
"I do not know how," he sobbed. "I do not know the Way. I have always followed. I have always obeyed. I do not know who I am. I am empty. I am nothing."
Thomas walked to him. He knelt. He took the man’s hand. The hand was cold. The hand was trembling.
"You are here," Thomas said. "You are alive. That is enough. That is the beginning. Look at the fire. Look at the light. It is yours. It has always been yours. We did not give it to you. We did not take it from you. It is yours."
The Warden looked up. His eyes were clear. They were new. They were bright.
"The Light," he whispered.
"Yes," Thomas said. "The Light."
The rain stopped. The wind died. The room was still. The air was clear. It was sweet. It was new.
The Warden stood. He walked to the door. It was heavy. It was iron. It was locked.
He placed his hand on it. He did not turn a key. He did not use a tool. He just pushed.
The door opened.
It swung wide. It creaked. It groaned. It let out a sigh.
Outside, there was no night. There was no dark. There was only light. It was white. It was pure. It was infinite.
The Warden stepped out. He walked into the glow. He did not look back. He did not speak. He just walked. He was gone.
Thomas remained. He sat by the hearth. The fire was out. The ashes were cold. He looked at them. They were white. They were soft. They were quiet.
He felt a peace. It was deep. It was vast. It was whole.
He remembered the village. He remembered the fields. The wheat was gold. The sky was blue. It was not a memory. It was a present. It was a promise.
He closed his eyes. He breathed in. He breathed out. The air was cool. The air was still.
He was alone. He was together. He was one.
The House was empty. The House was full. The House was gone.
Time moved. Time stopped. Time was a river. Time was a stone.
Thomas sat. He waited. He watched. He listened.
The silence was not empty. It was full. It was loud. It was a song. It was a hymn. It was a name.
He smiled. It was small. It was sad. It was true.
The light came in. It touched his face. It warmed his skin. It lit his eyes.
He did not move. He did not speak. He did not fight. He did not conquer. He did not win.
He simply was.
The ashes settled. The dust danced. The light held.
He was the exile. He was the home. He was the door. He was the light.
The story ended. The story began. The story was the silence. The silence was the truth. The truth was the freedom. The freedom was the peace. The peace was the love. The love was the community. The community was the self. The self was the whole.
He breathed. The world breathed. They were one.
The rain returned. It was soft. It was gentle. It was a kiss. It was a farewell.
Thomas opened his eyes. The room was dark. The light was gone. The Warden was gone. The door was closed.
But the door was open.
He knew it. He felt it. He knew the way.
He stood. He walked to the window. He looked out. The rain was falling. The trees were standing. The world was turning.
He was not alone. He was never alone.
He turned. He faced the hearth. He faced the dark. He faced the silence.
He spoke.
It was not a word. It was a breath. It was a sound. It was a light.
The walls shook. The floor trembled. The stone cracked.
The light came through. It was bright. It was blinding. It was beautiful.
Thomas closed his eyes. He smiled.
He let go.
The ashes rose. They flew. They danced. They became birds. They became stars. They became light.
They filled the room. They filled the world. They filled the sky.
Thomas was gone. Thomas was everywhere.
The silence remained. It was the song. It was the end. It was the beginning.
It was the Wistful Ashes.
