The Distant Temple
"Is it not true?"
The voice cut through the stale air of the hall. It did not ask. It stated.
You stood by the hearth. Your hands were folded. They were still. The fire had burned down to embers. They glowed with a dull, persistent red. You looked at the man. He was large. He wore velvet. The fabric was dark. It was stained with wine.
"True, my lord," you said.
Your voice was quiet. It carried well. The room was silent. The others watched. They held their breath. The air was thick. It tasted of iron and old dust.
The man, Lord Vane, stepped closer. He was the magistrate. He was the judge. He was the law. His shadow fell over you. It was long. It touched the floor. It swallowed your feet.
"Then you admit the theft," he said.
"I admit the taking," you said.
The distinction was small. It was sharp. It cut the air.
Vane smiled. It was a thin smile. It did not reach his eyes. His eyes were cold. They were blue. They were hard. He leaned in. He smelled of spiced wine. It was a cloying scent. It clung to the back of your throat.
"Who was the victim?" he asked.
You looked away. You looked at the wall. The wall was stone. It was cold. It had seen many things. It had seen many men. It had seen many lies.
"The poor," you said.
Vane laughed. It was a short bark. It was not a laugh. It was a sound. A release of tension.
"You are a fool," he said. "You are a clerk. You are a man of ink. You are not a man of fire. You are not a man of will."
"I am a man of record," you said.
"Yes." He tapped the table. The wood shook. "You are the record. You keep the books. You count the coins. You weigh the grain. You are the machine. You are the gear. You turn. You do not stop. You do not think. You are nothing."
He stood up. The chair scraped. The sound was loud. It was a scream.
"Bring the iron," he said.
The door opened. Two men entered. They were large. They wore leather. They had no faces. They were shadows. They moved with purpose. They moved with hunger.
One of them held a pot. It was black. It was heavy. Steam rose from it. It curled. It twisted. It was alive.
The other held a ladle. It was long. It was iron. It was cold.
You did not move. You did not flinch. You watched them. You watched the pot. The steam formed shapes. They were fleeting. They were gone.
Vane pointed at you. "Kneel."
You knelt. The stone bit into your knees. It was cold. It was hard. You felt the pain. It was distant. It was abstract.
Vane poured the liquid. It was clear. It was hot. It poured into the iron cup. The metal hissed. It spat. It screamed.
"Drink," he said.
You took the cup. It was heavy. It was hot. It burned your palm. You did not drop it. You held it. You brought it to your lips. You looked at Vane. He watched. He waited. He enjoyed it.
You drank. The liquid was bitter. It was acidic. It burned your tongue. It burned your throat. It burned your stomach. It was a fire. It was a brand.
You swallowed. You held the breath. You held the pain. You did not cough. You did not cry. You set the cup down. It clinked against the stone. It was a clear sound. It was a final sound.
Vane nodded. He was satisfied. He was pleased. He turned away. He walked to the window. He looked out. The night was dark. The stars were out. They were cold. They were indifferent.
"You are clean," he said. "You are purified. You are fit for duty. Go back to your desk. Write your words. Keep your counts. Be the machine."
He dismissed you. He did not look back. He was already gone. He was already somewhere else. He was already in another room. He was already in another world.
You stood up. Your legs were shaky. Your hands were steady. You walked to the door. You opened it. The night air hit you. It was cold. It was crisp. It was clean.
You walked out. You walked down the hall. The hall was long. The hall was dark. The shadows moved. The shadows watched. You did not look at them. You looked forward. You looked at the end of the hall.
There was a door. It was small. It was wood. It was old. It was the door to the archive.
You opened it. You entered. The room was dark. It was silent. It was full of dust. It was full of paper. It was full of time.
You walked to the desk. You sat down. The chair was old. It was worn. It was yours. You had sat there for years. You had sat there for decades. You had sat there for a lifetime.
You picked up the pen. It was heavy. It was cold. It was alive. You dipped it in the ink. The ink was black. It was deep. It was endless.
You began to write.
You wrote the names. You wrote the dates. You wrote the sums. You wrote the debts. You wrote the lies. You wrote the truth.
You wrote until your hand cramped. You wrote until the ink ran dry. You wrote until the candle burned low. You wrote until the light failed.
You stopped. You looked at the page. The words were there. They were clear. They were sharp. They were true.
You folded the paper. You placed it in the drawer. You locked the drawer. You turned off the light.
You left the room. You walked back to the hall. The hall was empty. The shadows were gone. The night was deep.
You went to your room. You lay down. You closed your eyes. You did not sleep. You waited. You listened.
The house was silent. The house was breathing. The house was alive.
In the morning, Vane came. He came to the hall. He was angry. He was loud. He was red.
"Where are the records?" he shouted.
You were there. You were by the hearth. You were still. You were quiet.
"In the archive," you said.
"Open it."
You opened it. The drawer was empty. The paper was gone. The ink was gone. The truth was gone.
Vane screamed. He struck the table. The wood cracked. The glass shattered. The wine spilled. It flowed like blood. It flowed like tears.
"You have destroyed the evidence," he said. "You have destroyed the law. You have destroyed me."
"I have kept the record," you said.
"No. You have hidden it. You have stolen it. You are a thief. You are a liar. You are a monster."
He pointed at you. His finger was shaking. His face was twisted. His eyes were wild.
"You will hang," he said. "You will die. You will rot. You will be forgotten."
You looked at him. You saw his fear. You saw his rage. You saw his emptiness. You saw his end.
You did not answer. You did not defend yourself. You did not explain. You did not beg.
You turned away. You walked to the door. You opened it. You walked out.
The sun was rising. The light was pale. The light was cold. The light was new.
You walked into the town. The people were waking. The dogs were barking. The carts were rolling. The life was starting.
You did not stop. You did not look back. You walked. You walked. You walked.
The town was small. The town was old. The town was grey. The stones were worn. The roofs were low. The smoke was thick.
You walked through the market. The stalls were open. The goods were fresh. The smells were strong. The bread was warm. The cheese was sharp. The fruit was sweet.
You did not buy. You did not sell. You did not speak. You did not see. You passed. You flowed. You moved.
You reached the square. The square was empty. The fountain was dry. The statue was broken. The king was gone. The power was gone. The order was gone.
You sat on the edge. The stone was cold. The stone was hard. You put your hands on your knees. You closed your eyes.
You thought of the pot. You thought of the liquid. You thought of the burn. You thought of the pain. You thought of the truth.
You thought of the ink. You thought of the paper. You thought of the words. You thought of the silence.
You thought of Vane. You thought of his face. You thought of his voice. You thought of his fear.
You did not feel triumph. You did not feel victory. You did not feel justice.
You felt nothing.
You felt the wind. The wind was cool. The wind was soft. The wind was clean.
You felt the sun. The sun was warm. The sun was bright. The sun was new.
You felt your heart. It was beating. It was steady. It was strong.
You opened your eyes. The square was empty. The world was quiet. The day was young.
You stood up. You brushed the dust from your clothes. You straightened your back. You adjusted your collar.
You turned. You walked. You walked away. You walked out. You walked on.
You did not look back.
The town shrank behind you. The houses became dots. The streets became lines. The smoke became a wisp. The sound became a hum. The life became a memory.
You walked into the fields. The grass was tall. The grass was green. The grass was wild.
You walked until the sun was high. You walked until the sun was low. You walked until the sun was gone.
The night came. The stars came. The moon came.
You were alone. You were free. You were empty.
You were full.
The end was not a death. The end was a beginning. The end was a breath. The end was a space.
You were the space.
You were the silence.
You were the truth.
The truth was silent.
The silence was true.
You walked.
The path was long.
The path was dark.
The path was yours.
You did not stop.
You did not turn.
You did not look.
You were gone.
You were here.
You were everywhere.
You were nothing.
You were everything.
The fire burned.
The fire died.
The ash remained.
The ash was quiet.
The ash was still.
The ash was free.
