The Distant Whispers
The cold in the hollow is not a temperature. It is a weight. It sits on your chest like a wet stone. You are here. You have been here for a long time, or a short time. Time moves differently in the dark. You remember the name of the place, though no one has spoken it aloud. It is the Throat.
You are a man of few words. This is your nature, or perhaps your punishment. You came here to pay a debt. You do not know who you owe it to. You only know that the silence here is loud. It presses against your eardrums until they ring with a high, thin note. You have a companion. His name is Silas. He is thin as wire and sharp as flint. He does not look at you often. He looks at the walls. The walls are breathing.
We walk. The path is made of packed ash. It crumbles under your boots. Silas walks ahead. He stops. He points. There is a figure in the distance. It stands still. It is wearing a coat the color of dried blood.
"Who is that?" you ask. Your voice is rough. It scrapes against your throat.
Silas does not answer. He turns his back to you. He stares at the figure. The figure does not move. The air around it shimmers. It is hot here. Sweat beads on your upper lip. You wipe it away. The sweat is black.
You walk closer. The figure is a man. He has his head bowed. His hands are behind his back. He is tied. The ropes are made of hair. They pulse. They beat like veins.
"Let him go," you say.
Silas turns. His eyes are wide. White. "You cannot," he says. "He is the keeper. If he falls, the roof falls."
The roof? There is no roof. There is only the sky. But the sky is low. It is a sheet of gray iron. It hangs above you. It creaks. It strains.
You look at the keeper. He lifts his head. His face is your face.
It is your face, but older. Worn. The skin is loose. The eyes are hollowed out. There is no flesh in the sockets. Only dark. Only deep. He looks at you. He smiles. It is a sad smile. It is the smile of a man who has lost everything and found nothing.
"Go," the keeper says. His voice is the sound of wind through dry leaves. "I am the price. You are the payment."
You step back. Your heart hammers. It hits your ribs like a fist. You look at Silas. Silas is trembling. He clutches his own throat. He makes a choking sound.
"What is this?" you ask.
"Truth," Silas says. He is crying. Tears run down his cheeks. They do not fall. They stick to his face. Like tar.
You look at the keeper again. The keeper is the version of you that failed. The version of you that gave up. The version of you that let the world crush him. You hate him. You want to break his neck. You want to tear him apart.
But you cannot. The ropes hold him tight. The ropes are your sins. Each knot is a lie you told. Each twist is a promise you broke. You see them now. They are all here. Bound in the hair. Bound in the dark.
The ground shakes. A deep rumble. The iron sky cracks. A fissure appears. Light pours through it. It is white. It is blinding. It burns.
Silas screams. He runs. He runs away from you. He runs toward the light. He does not look back. He is gone. He is swallowed by the white.
You are alone.
The keeper looks at you. He is smiling still. "Take it," he says.
You do not understand. "What?"
"The voice," he says. "It is yours. It is mine. It is the only thing that matters."
The keeper dissolves. He turns to mist. He turns to smoke. He drifts into the air. And the air fills you.
You feel it enter you. It is not pain. It is not pleasure. It is presence. It is a fullness. Your throat opens. Your chest expands. You can breathe. For the first time in your life, you can breathe.
You open your mouth. You try to speak.
Nothing comes out.
You try again.
Nothing.
You panic. You claw at your throat. You feel the flesh tear. You feel the bone shift. You are tearing yourself apart. You are trying to get it out. You are trying to get the silence out.
But the silence is you.
The iron sky falls.
It crashes down. It hits the ground. It hits you. The sound is immense. It is the sound of the end. You are crushed. You are flattened. You are dust.
But you are still here.
You are inside the dust. You are inside the dark. You are inside the cold.
You wait.
Time passes.
You do not know how long.
You open your eyes.
You are in a field.
The grass is green. It is wet. Dew clings to the blades. The sun is rising. It is yellow. It is soft. It warms your skin.
You are on your knees. Your clothes are torn. Your skin is scraped. You look like a beggar. You look like a ghost.
There is a man nearby. He is sitting on a rock. He is eating an apple. He is chewing slowly. He looks at you. He does not look surprised. He does not look afraid. He looks at you with a quiet recognition.
"Hello," he says.
You try to speak. Your voice is gone. You cannot make a sound. You open your mouth. Air rushes out. It is a whistle. It is a sigh.
The man smiles. He stands up. He walks toward you. He extends his hand.
You look at his hand. It is rough. It is calloused. It is strong.
You reach out. You take his hand.
He pulls you up.
You stand. You are tall. You are solid.
The man looks at you. He waits.
You look at him. You see his eyes. They are brown. They are kind. They are full of grief.
You realize who he is.
It is Silas.
He is not Silas. He is not the thin, sharp man from the dark. He is a farmer. He is a neighbor. He is a friend.
He does not know what happened. He does not know what you saw. He does not know what you are.
But he knows you.
He squeezes your hand. He squeezes hard.
"Come," he says. "We have work to do."
You follow him.
The field is large. It stretches to the horizon. The sky is blue. It is vast. It is empty.
You walk.
Your feet hurt.
Your throat hurts.
But you are alive.
You are free.
The silence is no longer a weight.
It is a space.
It is a room.
It is a home.
You walk beside him.
You do not speak.
You do not need to.
He knows.
You know.
The sun rises higher.
The light grows stronger.
You feel it on your face.
You feel it on your hands.
You feel it in your bones.
It is warm.
It is life.
It is enough.
You look at the ground.
The grass is growing.
It is green.
It is alive.
It is you.
You are the grass.
You are the sun.
You are the silence.
You are the space between the words.
You are the breath.
You are the life.
You are here.
You are now.
You are enough.
The man walks ahead.
You follow.
The path is clear.
The path is open.
The path is yours.
You walk.
You breathe.
You live.
