The Wistful Mirror

You are standing at the edge of the precipice. The wind here does not blow. It presses. It pushes against your chest plate, against the tactical vest that feels less like armor and more like a shroud. You are a Major. You have spent twenty years learning the geometry of control. You know the weight of a rifle. You know the exact millisecond a trigger breaks. You know the sound of a bone snapping. You do not know what is happening now.

The world has shifted. The ground beneath your boots is not dirt. It is glass. Smooth, cold, and black. It reflects your face, but the reflection is wrong. It is older. It is sicker. You look down. You see the team. There are four of them. They stand in a line. They do not move. They do not breathe. They are statues carved from the same black glass. You check your watch. The second hand is stopped. Time has died.

You speak into your radio. No static. No voice. Just the hum of the void.

We need to move, you say.

The silence answers. It is heavy. It has texture. You take a step. The glass cracks under your boot. A spiderweb of fractures spreads out. You look at your feet. You look at the others. They are still. They are waiting.

You turn to the left. There is a door. It is made of flesh. Pale and smooth. It has no handle. It has no hinge. It simply is. You approach it. Your hand hovers over the surface. It is warm. It pulses. You touch it. The skin yields. It ripples. You feel a heartbeat. Not yours.

You push.

You fall through.

You land on a floor of white tiles. The light is blinding. It is sterile. It is the light of a hospital operating room. You are in a room. You are alone. Or you think you are.

You stand up. You dust off your uniform. The dust is grey. It smells of ozone. You look around. There is a table. On the table is a bowl. It is made of ceramic. It is white. It is cracked.

Inside the bowl is food. It is red. It is wet. It looks like liver. It looks like meat. It looks like blood. You do not know what it is. You do not want to know.

You take a step back. Your boot hits the tile. The sound is sharp. It echoes.

From the corner, a voice speaks.

It is low. It is calm. It is familiar.

You know that voice.

You turn.

A man stands in the shadows. He is wearing a white coat. He is tall. He is thin. He is holding a tray. On the tray is a knife. The knife is long. It is silver. It is gleaming.

It is your brother.

His name is Thomas. He died five years ago. A car accident. The road was icy. He was driving. You were not. You were on duty. You were too far away. You missed the funeral. You missed the burial. You missed everything.

You stare at him. He stares at you. He does not smile. He does not blink.

Hello, he says.

You cannot speak. Your throat is tight. Your heart is hammering against your ribs. You reach for your sidearm. Your hand is shaking. The gun is heavy. It feels like lead.

Put it down, he says.

No.

He steps forward. The tiles are cold. He does not seem to care. He looks at the bowl. He looks at the food.

It is time, he says.

What time? you ask. Your voice is a whisper. It is dry. It is broken.

The time to eat.

You do not understand. You do not understand why he is here. You do not understand why the room is here. You do not understand why the glass is cracking. You are a soldier. You fight things. You kill things. You do not eat things.

You raise the gun. You aim at his head. The sight is clear. The distance is short. You can hit him. You can end this. You can prove that you are still you. That you are still in control.

You fire.

The gun fires. The noise is deafening. The smoke is thick. It fills the room. It stings your eyes. You cough. You wipe your face. You look at Thomas.

He is standing there. He is untouched. The bullet did not hit him. The bullet did not exist. The gun is empty. The gun is broken. The gun is dust.

You drop the pieces. They clatter on the tiles. They sound like bones.

Thomas picks up the knife. He picks up the bowl. He brings it to you.

Eat, he says.

No.

You step back. You back into the wall. The wall is soft. It is flesh again. You are trapped. You are in the throat. You are in the mouth.

Thomas is close now. He is very close. You can see the pores on his skin. You can see the veins in his hands. They are blue. They are dark. They are wrong.

He is not a ghost. He is not a memory. He is a mirror.

You look at his face. You see your own face. But it is distorted. It is hungry. It is starving.

You look at the bowl. The meat is pulsing. It is alive. It is calling to you. It is calling to the part of you that is weak. The part of you that is tired. The part of you that is guilty.

You did not come to the funeral. You did not call. You did not cry. You buried him in your mind. You buried him under the weight of your rank. You buried him under the weight of your duty.

Now he is coming out. Now he is taking form. Now he is feeding you.

Take a bite, he says.

You close your eyes. You breathe. You remember the smell of his house. The smell of coffee. The smell of rain. You remember his hand on your shoulder. You remember his laugh. It was a deep laugh. It was a warm laugh.

You open your eyes. You look at the meat. You look at the knife.

You do not take the bowl.

You lunge.

You grab the knife from his hand. The steel is cold. It bites into your palm. You do not care. You swing.

You swing at him. You swing at the mirror. You swing at the truth.

The air resists. It is thick. It is heavy. Your arm burns. Your muscles scream. You are fighting a ghost. You are fighting your own shadow.

He does not move. He does not flinch. He watches you. He waits.

You swing again. And again. And again.

Your hands bleed. The blood drips on the white tiles. It looks like wine. It looks like life. It looks like love.

You stop. You are out of breath. You are panting. Your chest heaves. You look at your hands. They are red. They are slick.

Thomas looks at you. He looks at the bowl. He looks at the knife.

He smiles.

It is a small smile. It is sad. It is tired.

You win, he says.

What?

You win.

He sets the bowl down. He sets the knife down. He steps back. He fades.

His face blurs. His body dissolves. He becomes mist. He becomes light. He becomes nothing.

The room is empty.

The light is dim. The tiles are cold. The bowl is still there. The meat is still there.

You look at the bowl. You look at your hands. The blood is drying. It is turning black. It is turning hard.

You pick up the knife.

You pick up the bowl.

You walk to the door. The door is open. Beyond the door is the glass. Beyond the glass is the precipice.

You step out.

The wind hits you. It is cold. It is real. You are back. You are on the edge. The team is still there. The statues are still there.

But they are changing.

The glass is cracking. The fractures are spreading. The statues are falling. They shatter into a million pieces. The black glass turns to sand. The sand blows away.

The sky is blue. It is bright. It is clear.

You look down. There is no ground. There is only sky.

You jump.

You fall.

You fall through the clouds. You fall through the light. You fall through the memory.

You land on the pavement.

You are in the street. It is night. It is raining. The rain is warm. It is real.

You are in your car. You are in your driveway. You are at home.

You sit in the driver’s seat. Your hands are on the wheel. Your hands are clean. There is no blood. There is no glass. There is no bowl.

But your hands are shaking.

You look in the rearview mirror.

You see your face. It is old. It is tired.

You see your brother.

He is sitting in the passenger seat.

He is not there.

He is not there.

You are alone.

You start the car. The engine roars. It is loud. It is alive.

You drive.

You drive through the dark. You drive through the rain. You drive through the night.

You do not stop. You do not look back.

You drive to the edge of the city. You drive to the bridge.

You stop the car. You sit in the silence.

The rain taps on the windshield. It is a rhythm. It is a heartbeat.

You think about the meat. You think about the knife. You think about the betrayal.

You were not betrayed.

You were not abandoned.

You were not left behind.

You left.

You left him. You left the life. You left the love. You chose the duty. You chose the rank. You chose the control.

And it ate you.

It ate you from the inside.

Now you are hollow. Now you are empty.

You look at the wheel. You look at the road.

You get out of the car.

You walk to the railing. You lean over. The water is black. The water is deep.

You look down.

You see a face. It is your face. It is smiling.

It is not your smile.

It is his smile.

You climb back over the railing. You get back in the car. You start the engine.

You drive home.

You drive to the house. You drive to the door.

You walk in. You walk to the kitchen.

You open the fridge.

It is empty.

There is no food. There is no drink. There is nothing.

You close the door.

You sit at the table.

You wait.

You wait for the bowl.

You wait for the knife.

You wait for the brother.

The clock ticks. The second hand moves.

Time has returned.

But the silence is louder.

The silence is heavier.

The silence is the only thing left.

You are the soldier. You are the hunter. You are the killer.

But you are also the prey.

You are the mirror.

And the mirror is broken.

And you are the piece that remains.

You are the shard that cuts.

You are the pain that does not heal.

You are the memory that does not fade.

You are the ghost that does not rest.

You are the man who did not cry.

You are the man who did not call.

You are the man who did not come.

And you are the man who is still here.

You are the man who is still alive.

And that is the worst part.

That is the true horror.

Not the death.

But the life.

The life that goes on.

The life that continues.

The life that waits.

You sit in the chair. You wait for the dawn.

The dawn comes.

The light enters the window.

The light is white.

The light is cold.

The light is empty.

You stand up.

You walk to the door.

You open it.

You step out.

You walk into the world.

You walk into the morning.

You walk into the pain.

You walk into the truth.

You walk into the silence.

And you do not stop.

You do not stop.

You do not stop.
