The Golden Crossing

The room smells of ozone and stale beer. You are standing. Your hands are steady. They have been steady for a long time. You look at the glass in your hand. It is clear. It is cold. You drink.

You are a soldier. Or you were. The uniform is gone. The insignia is gone. But the posture remains. It is etched into your spine. You do not slouch. You do not shift your weight. You stand like a fence post in a field of dead wheat.

Around you, the others laugh. They throw paper hats. They spill drinks on the table. It is a celebration. A victory party. The war is over. They say. The ink is dry on the treaty. They sign with gold pens. They shake hands in the white marble halls.

You are here. You are one of them. Or so they think.

"You look like a ghost, Thomas," says Sarah. She is pretty. She is new. She does not know your name yet, but she knows your face. She knows the hollows under your eyes. "Are you drinking enough?"

"I am fine," you say. Your voice is low. It is a rumble. Like a truck idling in the dark.

"You are too quiet."

"Silence is a weapon. I am saving it."

She smiles. It is a small smile. It does not reach her eyes. She turns away. She joins the crowd. The noise swells. It hits you in the chest. It is a physical blow. You brace against it.

You look down at the table. There is a mark. A scratch. A thin line in the wood. It runs across the center. It is old. It is worn. But it is there. You run your finger over it. The wood is smooth. It is worn smooth by time. By hands. By friction.

This is the mark. This is the seal.

You do not show it to anyone. You keep it to yourself. You hold it in your mind. You hold it in your fingers. It is the only thing that is real. The rest is noise. The rest is light. The rest is air.

The room is bright. Too bright. The lights buzz. They hum a low note. It vibrates in your teeth. You look at the ceiling. The tiles are white. They are cracked. A web of fissures spreads from the center. Like a broken plate. Like a shattered lens.

You remember the field.

It was not a field. It was a place. A sector. Coordinate 44-Alpha. The mud was thick. It was brown. It smelled of iron. It smelled of blood. It was the same smell. Always the same smell.

You were there. You were alone. Or you were with them. It depends on who is telling the story. The official report says you were there. The official report says you did your duty. The official report says you were brave.

The official report is a lie.

It is a clean lie. It is a polished lie. It has no smell. It has no weight. It fits in a file. It sits on a shelf. It gathers dust.

You do not believe it.

You believe the mud. You believe the cold. You believe the sound of the wind in the grass. You believe the way the light fell in the afternoon. It was golden. It was heavy. It pressed down on the world. It made everything look like a painting. A dead painting.

You look at the table again. The scratch. It is longer now. Or it was always longer. You are not sure. Time is a trick. Time is a thief. It steals the truth. It leaves the shape.

"Thomas."

It is the voice of the General. He is standing beside you. He is tall. He is broad. His face is a mask. It is painted with authority. It is painted with certainty.

"General," you say. You do not look up. You look at the table.

"We need to talk."

"Yes."

"About the incident."

"Yes."

"About the seal."

Your hand tightens on the glass. The ice clinks. It is a sharp sound. It cuts the air.

"The seal is gone," he says.

"It is here."

"Where?"

"Here." You tap your head. You tap your chest. You tap the table.

He looks at you. His eyes are cold. They are blue. They are the color of ice. They are the color of steel.

"You are confused, Thomas. The seal was a symbol. It was a tool. It is gone. The war is over. The symbol is obsolete."

"No," you say. "It is not obsolete. It is the law. It is the code. It is the word."

"The word is peace."

"The word is blood."

He steps back. He looks at the room. The people are watching. They are whispering. They point. They nod. They are afraid. They are not afraid of you. They are afraid of the truth. They are afraid of the stain.

"Come with me," he says.

"I will go where I am told."

He walks. You follow. You do not run. You do not stop. You walk. Your boots hit the floor. They make a sound. It is a hard sound. It is a final sound.

The door opens. The air is cold. It is sharp. It bites your face. You step out. The night is dark. The stars are out. They are bright. They are far. They do not care. They do not see.

They walk down the street. The street is empty. The lights are on. They are yellow. They are sick. They pool on the pavement.

"Explain," he says. His voice is flat. It is a command. It is a blade.

"I cannot."

"You must. The seal. The mark. What is it?"

"It is a record."

"A record of what?"

"Of the cost."

"Costs are acceptable. In war. In peace. In all things. We pay the price. We move on."

"We do not move on. We stay. We hold. We remember."

He stops. He turns to you. He looks at your face. He sees something. He sees the crack. He sees the break.

"You are broken, Thomas."

"I am whole."

"No. You are shattered. You are the shard that refuses to fit. You are the piece that does not belong."

"I am the piece that remembers."

He sighs. It is a long sound. It is a tired sound. He is old. He is tired of war. He is tired of you. He is tired of the past.

"Listen to me. The seal is gone. I erased it. I burned it. I buried it. It is dead. And so is the code. The old code. The code that said we must pay. The code that said we must bleed. It is dead."

"Is it?"

"Yes. We have a new system. It is better. It is fair. It is clean. No one pays. No one bleeds. No one remembers. We are free."

"Free to what?"

"To forget."

You look at him. You look at his hands. They are clean. They are smooth. They are white. They have never held a weapon. They have never held a dead man. They have never held a seal.

"I will not forget," you say.

"You must."

"No."

He raises his hand. It is a gesture. It is a command. It is a threat.

"Thomas. Do not make this difficult. You are a soldier. You obey. You obey the chain. You obey the order. The order is to forget. To let go. To cross the bridge and not look back."

"I will look back."

"Then you will fall."

The air changes. It becomes heavy. It becomes thick. It is like water. It is like mud. It presses against your skin. It presses against your lungs.

You feel it. You feel the pull. It is a gravity. It is a force. It is the weight of the world. It is the weight of the truth.

You look at the ground. The pavement is wet. It is dark. It is deep. It is a hole. It is a pit. It is the end.

You feel the pull in your bones. It is a hook. It is a chain. It is a rope. It is tight. It is tight. It is tighter.

You do not fight it. You do not struggle. You do not scream. You accept it. You are a soldier. You accept the order. You accept the fate. You accept the end.

You close your eyes. You see the seal. It is in your mind. It is in your blood. It is in your breath. It is gold. It is bright. It is sharp. It is real.

You open your eyes. The General is gone. The street is empty. The lights are still on. They are yellow. They are sick.

You are alone.

You are standing. You are steady. You are still.

You look down. Your hands are shaking. They are not steady. They are not calm. They are trembling. They are weak.

You look at the ground. There is a mark. A scratch. A thin line. It is not on the table. It is on the pavement. It is on the street. It is on the world.

It is worn. It is smooth. It is old.

You touch it. It is cold. It is hard. It is real.

You are the mark. You are the seal. You are the record.

You are the one who holds.

You are the one who remembers.

You are the one who pays.

You stand in the dark. You stand in the cold. You stand in the silence.

You do not leave. You do not move. You do not sleep.

You wait. You hold. You keep.

The light comes. The sun rises. It is pale. It is weak. It does not warm. It does not heal. It does not forgive.

It shines on you. It shines on the mark. It shines on the truth.

You are there. You are still. You are whole.

You are the golden crossing. You are the bridge. You are the cost.

You are the end.

You are the beginning.

You are the scar.

You are the song.

You are the silence.

You are the sound.

You are the man.

You are the war.

You are the peace.

You are the lie.

You are the truth.

You are here.

You are now.

You are always.

The end is not a door. It is a wall. You hit it. You stay. You bleed. You stay.

The world turns. The world spins. The world forgets.

You do not.

You hold the mark. You hold the seal. You hold the weight.

You are the anchor.

You are the stone.

You are the root.

You are the deep.

You are the dark.

You are the light.

You are the fire.

You are the ash.

You are the wind.

You are the rain.

You are the soil.

You are the seed.

You are the tree.

You are the branch.

You are the leaf.

You are the fall.

You are the rest.

You are the rise.

You are the breath.

You are the heart.

You are the soul.

You are the ghost.

You are the man.

You are the soldier.

You are the keeper.

You are the guardian.

You are the watcher.

You are the witness.

You are the record.

You are the seal.

You are the mark.

You are the scar.

You are the truth.

You are the end.

You are the beginning.

You are the story.

You are the song.

You are the silence.

You are the sound.

You are the word.

You are the voice.

You are the cry.

You are the shout.

You are the whisper.

You are the echo.

You are the echo.

You are the echo.

You are the echo.

You are the echo.

You are the echo.

You are the echo.

You are the echo.

You are the echo.

You are the echo.

You are the echo.
