The Distant Joke

The rain hits the glass. It is hard. It is cold. You feel it on your skin through the wool of your tunic. The stone walls of the keep are thick. They hold the heat in. But they hold the fear in, too. You are the Captain. You have the badge. You have the sword. You have the law.

"Is it done?" you ask. Your voice is low. It does not shake. You do not let it shake.

The young squire looks at you. His name is Thomas. He is small. He is new. His eyes are wide. They are wet. He holds a lantern. The flame jumps. It casts long shadows on the floor. The shadows look like fingers.

"The cellar is sealed," Thomas says. "The lock is broken. The key is gone. I could not find it."

You step forward. You are tall. Your armor clinks. It is a harsh sound. It is the sound of order. It is the sound of control. "Who is inside?" you ask.

"My wife," Thomas whispers. "Eleanor. She will not leave. She says it is a trap. She says the walls are breathing."

You look at the door. It is heavy oak. It is banded with iron. It has stood for a hundred years. It is strong. It is old. It is worn. The wood is black with age. The iron is rusted. The rust is red. It looks like blood.

"Open it," you command.

Thomas flinches. He looks at the floor. He looks at his boots. He is afraid of the dark. He is afraid of what is inside. "Sir, please. The air is bad. It smells of rot. It smells of fear."

You take the lantern from his hand. Your grip is tight. You feel the heat of the glass. You feel the pulse of the flame. You are the light. You are the law. You push the door open. It groans. The sound is deep. It is a sound of pain.

The stairs go down. They are narrow. They are steep. The stone is slick with damp. You go first. Thomas follows. He is close behind you. You can smell him. He smells of sweat. He smells of terror.

The air gets colder. It gets heavier. It presses against your chest. It is hard to breathe. You keep walking. You do not stop. You cannot stop. You are the Captain. You do not stop.

You reach the bottom. The cellar is large. It is dark. You raise the lantern. The light cuts through the gloom. It shows you the stones. They are rough. They are ancient. They are covered in moss. The moss is green. It is alive. It is growing.

And there is Eleanor.

She is sitting on a crate. She is wrapped in a blanket. She is holding a knife. The knife is small. It is sharp. Her eyes are fixed on you. They are empty. They are dark.

"Captain," she says. Her voice is flat. It is dead. "You found us."

You lower the lantern. The light fades. The shadows return. "Get up," you say. "It is over. The threat is gone. The intruder is dead."

There is no intruder. You checked the gate. You checked the walls. There was no one. The report was a lie. The alarm was a lie. The fear was a lie.

Eleanor stands up. She moves slowly. Her knees crack. She walks toward you. She holds the knife out. The blade catches the light. It flashes. It is bright. It is white.

"Put it down," you say. Your voice is hard. You are the law. You are the shield. You are the wall.

"Look at the walls, Captain," she says. She points. Her finger is thin. It is pale. "Look at the stones. Look at the marks."

You look. You see the scratches. They are deep. They are fresh. They are on the stone. They are not from a sword. They are not from a tool. They are from a nail. They are from a fingernail.

Thousands of them.

They cover the wall. They cover the floor. They cover the ceiling. They are everywhere. They are a web. They are a cage.

"The system," Eleanor says. Her voice is quiet. It is soft. It is sad. "It is not a protector. It is a predator. It eats us. It eats our time. It eats our love. It eats our sanity."

You feel a chill. It is not from the cold. It is from the truth. You have served for twenty years. You have protected the keep. You have kept the peace. You have kept the order. But what is order? What is peace?

You look at Thomas. He is standing in the doorway. He is trembling. He is crying. "I heard them," he says. "I heard them scratching. Every night. I thought it was rats. I thought it was the wind. But it was us. It was us scratching at the walls."

You look at the scratches again. They are not scratches. They are letters. They are words. You bring the lantern closer. You read them.

*Help.*

*Why.*

*Pain.*

*Hunger.*

*Dark.*

The words are repeated. They are the same. They are the only words. They are the language of the trapped. They are the language of the forgotten.

You realize then. The keep is not a home. It is a tomb. The law is not a shield. It is a shackle. You are not a protector. You are a jailer. And you are the key. And you are the lock.

Eleanor steps closer. She holds the knife to your throat. The blade is cold. It is sharp. It is real. "Do you know what they do, Captain? When we scream? When we cry? They lock us tighter. They make us stronger. They make us believe the pain is the point. That the suffering is the purpose."

You do not move. You do not breathe. You are still. You are stone.

"I will not hurt you," Eleanor says. Her voice breaks. It is a crack in the silence. "I will not hurt you. But I will not go back up. I will not go back to the light. The light is a lie. The light is a cage."

Thomas steps forward. "Eleanor," he says. "Please. Come with me. We can leave. We can go. There is a world outside. There is a road. There is a life."

Eleanor looks at him. Her eyes are wet. Her face is pale. She shakes her head. "No. There is no outside. There is only the inside. And the inside is me. And I am broken."

You look at the knife. You look at her hand. It is steady. It is sure. She is ready. She is done.

You reach out. You take the knife from her hand. It is a slow motion. It is a graceful motion. You feel the weight of it. You feel the balance. You are a warrior. You know the blade. You know its edge.

You do not throw it. You do not break it. You put it in your belt. You clip it tight. It is part of you now. It is part of the law.

"Come," you say. Your voice is low. It is gentle. It is kind. "We will go up. We will go out. We will see the rain. We will see the road. We will see the world."

Eleanor looks at you. She is confused. She is hopeful. She is afraid. "But the walls," she says. "The scratches. The pain. It will follow us."

"No," you say. "The walls are here. The pain is here. We leave them. We leave the keep. We leave the law. We leave the badge."

You turn to Thomas. "Take your sword. Take your shield. Drop them. Leave them here. Let them rust. Let them rot. Let them become part of the stone."

Thomas hesitates. He looks at his armor. He looks at his weapon. He has worn them for so long. They are his skin. They are his identity. But he sees your face. He sees your eyes. He sees the truth.

He takes off his helmet. He drops it. It hits the stone. It clangs. It echoes. The sound is loud. It is final.

He takes off his gauntlets. He drops them. They clatter. They roll. They stop.

He takes off his breastplate. It is heavy. It is cold. He drops it. It lands with a thud. It is a sound of release. It is a sound of freedom.

He is naked. He is vulnerable. He is human.

Eleanor is still there. She is still holding the blanket. She is still wrapped in the dark. You walk to her. You take her hand. It is cold. It is dry. You hold it tight. You do not let go.

"Let us go," you say.

She nods. She stands up. She walks with you. You walk up the stairs. The air gets warmer. The air gets cleaner. The smell of rot fades. The smell of stone fades.

You reach the top. You open the door. The rain is still falling. It is hard. It is cold. But it is clean. It is pure. It is alive.

You step out. Thomas steps out. Eleanor steps out.

You stand in the rain. You feel the drops on your face. You feel the drops on your arms. You feel the drops on your chest. You are wet. You are cold. You are free.

You look at the keep. It is dark. It is silent. It is empty. The windows are black. The walls are gray. The iron is rusted. It is a monument. It is a grave.

You look at the road. It is long. It is winding. It goes into the distance. It goes into the dark. It goes into the unknown.

You do not know where you are going. You do not know what you will find. You do not know if you will survive.

But you are here. You are now. You are alive.

Eleanor leans against you. Her head is on your shoulder. Her breath is warm. It is steady. It is life.

Thomas stands beside you. He is shivering. He is smiling. He is young. He is new. He is free.

The rain continues. It washes the dust from your skin. It washes the blood from your hands. It washes the fear from your eyes. It washes the law from your soul.

You are no longer the Captain. You are no longer the jailer. You are no longer the stone.

You are the man. You are the woman. You are the boy. You are the rain. You are the road. You are the journey.

The keep stands behind you. It is a shadow. It is a memory. It is a scar.

You walk forward. You walk into the rain. You walk into the night. You walk into the dark.

You do not look back. You cannot look back. The past is a chain. The past is a wall. The past is a lie.

You only have the now. You only have the step. You only have the breath.

And that is enough. And that is all. And that is the truth.

The rain falls. The road goes on. You are free. You are broken. You are whole.

The distant joke of the law is that it protects you from yourself. And when you escape, you are not safe. You are naked. You are alone. You are human.

And that is the only freedom that matters.
