The Golden Oath

The frost bites the stone floor of the hall. You feel it through the thin soles of your boots. It is a cold that does not stop at the skin. It settles in the bone. You are the scribe. You are the keeper of the ledger. You are no one.

You sit in the shadow of the great oak table. The wood is dark and polished. It reflects the candlelight in long, wavering strips. Your hands are steady. They have always been steady. You write the names of the dead. You write the debts of the living. You do not look up. To look up is to be seen. To be seen is to be dangerous.

The King sits at the head of the table. He is not old. He is young and sharp. His eyes are the color of winter sky. They do not blink. He looks at you. He looks at the man beside you.

Sir Edward Ashworth stands. He is tall. His armor is bright. It shines in the dim light. He is the King’s right hand. He is the man who brings you the scrolls. He is the man who tells you what to write. He is the traitor. You know this. You have known it for three days.

Edward smiles. It is a thin smile. It does not reach his eyes.

"Write it down," Edward says.

His voice is low. It is soft. It cuts through the silence of the hall.

"Write it down, Thomas," he says.

You pick up the quill. The ink is black. It is thick. It smells of iron and rot. You dip the quill. You touch the paper.

The paper is cold.

You do not write the name of the traitor. You do not write the crime. You write the wind. You write the rain. You write the cold. You write nothing that matters.

Edward watches your hand. He sees the hesitation. He knows. He has always known. He is the one who taught you how to hold the quill. He is the one who taught you the weight of the words. He is the one who loves you. Not as a friend. Not as a subject. He loves you with a hunger that burns. It is a primal thing. It is a beast in the chest. It ignores reason. It ignores law. It ignores the King.

You feel the heat of his gaze. It is a physical thing. It presses against your back. You want to run. You want to scream. You want to take the quill and stab it into his eye. You want to burn the table. You want to break the world.

Instead, you write.

"The wind blows from the north," you say.

Your voice is quiet. It is steady.

Edward nods. "Good."

He turns to the King. "My Lord, the scribe has recorded the terms."

The King leans forward. He is interested now. He likes the game. He likes the tension. He likes the fear in your eyes.

"Read it," the King says.

You stand. Your legs are weak. You hold the paper. Your hand trembles. Just once. Just for a second.

You read the words. They are empty. They are air. They are snow.

The King is satisfied. He waves his hand. He does not want to hear more. He has his answer. He has his confirmation. He believes you are loyal. He believes Edward is loyal. They are both wrong. They are both blind. They see only what they wish to see.

You sit back down. Your heart is a drum. It beats against your ribs. It is too loud. You are sure they hear it. You are sure they see the fear.

Edward sits beside you. He is close. Too close. You can smell the sweat on his skin. You can smell the wine on his breath.

"Do not fear," he whispers.

His lips touch your ear. The sound of his breath is a ghost.

"I am with you," he says.

You close your eyes. You try to breathe. You try to think.

The next day comes. The snow stops. The sun comes out. It is a weak sun. It is pale. It does not warm.

You go to the garden. It is a small place. It is behind the palace. It is forgotten. The walls are high. The stones are mossy. There is a tree in the center. It is a pear tree. It is bare. It has no fruit. It has no leaves.

You sit on the bench. You wait.

Edward comes. He does not bring guards. He does not bring the King. He comes alone. He wears a black cloak. It hides his armor. It hides his shape.

He sits beside you. He does not speak. He looks at the tree.

"It will bloom," he says.

"You are a fool," you say.

Your voice is hard. It is sharp.

"He will kill you," you say. "He will kill me. He will kill us both."

Edward turns to you. His face is pale. His eyes are wet.

"He is not who you think," he says.

"Who is he?" you ask.

"He is the system," Edward says. "He is the law. He is the order. He is the thing that must be broken."

You look at him. You do not believe him. You do not understand him.

"Why?" you ask.

"Because I love you," he says.

The words are heavy. They fall like stones. They hit the ground. They make a sound.

You feel a shock. It is not joy. It is not anger. It is a void. It is a hole in the air.

You look at the tree. The bark is gray. It is rough. It is dead.

"You are wrong," you say.

"Am I?" he asks.

"Yes," you say. "You are wrong. You are a traitor. You are a coward. You are a man who sells his soul for a feeling. It is not worth it."

Edward stands. He walks to the tree. He touches the bark. His hand is gentle. It is tender.

"Watch," he says.

He steps back. He waits.

Nothing happens.

The tree is still. The branches are still. The air is still.

Edward turns to you. He smiles. It is a sad smile.

"It is too late," he says.

He walks away. He goes into the palace. He does not look back.

You sit on the bench. You wait. You wait for the sun to set. You wait for the dark to come. You wait for the end.

The King comes. He comes with his guards. They carry swords. They carry torches. The light is bright. It is harsh. It burns.

The King stops in front of you. He looks at the tree. He looks at you.

"Where is he?" the King asks.

You do not answer. You look at the tree.

"Where is Ashworth?" the King asks.

His voice is cold. It is ice.

You stand. You walk to the tree. You put your hand on the bark. It is cold. It is hard.

"He is here," you say.

The King frowns. He is confused.

"Where?" he asks.

You point to the tree.

"Here," you say.

The King looks at the tree. He looks at you. He sees your face. He sees your eyes. He sees the truth.

He laughs. It is a short laugh. It is cruel.

"Is it?" he asks.

He draws his sword. The metal shines. It is sharp.

"Then we shall see," he says.

He swings the sword. He cuts the branch. The branch falls. It hits the ground. It makes a sound.

It is a heavy sound. It is final.

You look at the branch. It is dead. It is dry. It is broken.

You look at the King. He is angry. He is disappointed.

"Where is he?" he asks.

You do not answer. You do not speak. You close your eyes. You feel the cold. You feel the wind. You feel the weight of the stone.

The King sheathes his sword. He turns to his guards.

"Search the palace," he says. "Find him. Bring him to me."

The guards move. They are silent. They are efficient.

The King walks away. He does not look at you. He does not see you. You are invisible. You are nothing.

You sit on the bench. You wait.

The dark comes. The stars come out. They are small. They are cold. They are far.

You feel a pain in your chest. It is a sharp pain. It is a deep pain. It is the pain of loss. It is the pain of love. It is the pain of truth.

You think of Edward. You think of his voice. You think of his hand. You think of his eyes.

You were wrong. You were right. It does not matter.

The system wins. The law wins. The order wins.

But you are still here. You are still alive. You are still the scribe. You are still the keeper.

You pick up the quill. You open the ledger. You write.

You write the name of the tree. You write the name of the wind. You write the name of the snow.

You write the truth. You write it in the dark. You write it in the cold. You write it in the silence.

No one will read it. No one will know. But it is there. It is on the page. It is in the ink.

It is real.

The moon rises. It is full. It is bright. It is white.

It looks down on you. It looks down on the tree. It looks down on the palace.

It sees everything. It sees nothing.

You close the book. You put the quill down. You stand up.

You walk to the tree. You touch the bark.

It is warm.

You open your eyes.

The tree is in bloom.

The white flowers are everywhere. They are soft. They are light. They are beautiful.

They cover the branches. They cover the ground. They cover the air.

You smell the scent. It is sweet. It is strong. It is alive.

You cry. You do not wipe your face. You let the tears fall.

They hit the ground. They mix with the snow. They disappear.

You stand in the garden. You are alone. You are free.

The King is in the palace. He is angry. He is blind. He is lost.

Edward is gone. He is dead. He is dust.

But the tree is here. The tree is real. The tree is alive.

You look at the flowers. They are golden in the moonlight. They are the oath. They are the promise. They are the truth.

You close your eyes. You feel the wind. You feel the cold. You feel the life.

You are the scribe. You are the keeper. You are the witness.

You have seen the end. You have seen the beginning.

You have seen the middle.

It is enough.

It is enough.
